Lol Bigfooty chest beating for the millionth time isn't going to magically conjure up a second first rounder for the Eagles.

The Eagles are desperate for picks. They need young talent in a specific age group to mature together for a shot at a flag in 3-5 years time.
They aren't desperate to keep a 29 year old Barrass for another three years.

They will get their first and some change. Take it to the bank.

It will be a mutually beneficial trade for all parties. Barrass, Eagles and Hawthorn will be happy at the end of the day.

He's a vice captain on a long term deal, and a local boy

The Eagles are not as desperate to push him out as you are suggesting, even though of course they would be happy with a stronger draft hand.

They may be desperate for picks, but they're just as desperate for leaders in that age bracket.

If the last day of trade with 30 minutes to go
hawks have #12 on the table and wont budge

Which team blinks

Hawthorn, or it doesn't get done.

Hawks don’t get to dictate the trade here, as everyone has said multiple times.

Hawks offered 5 years to a CONTRACTED player.
Onus is on them to pry him out, Eagles can ask for overs.

Two firsts for a future 2nd or 3rd back

  • he will be 29
  • he wants to leave and has made that obvious
  • previous injury issues
  • WCE are in desperate need of picks
  • he would not be part of any future success
  • WCE need to cash in on tradeable assets whilst they can
  • they want to trade him, hence they did not honour their verbal agreement re his contract
  • look at the history of trades for players of that age

What we offered him is irrelevant.

Eagles can ask doesn’t mean hawks have to pay.

If that’s the least the eagles will take then Barrass can stay put. No skin off the hawks nose. No need to overpay just because.

Hawthorn, or it doesn't get done.

Or another Vic team, maybe even Sydney try again.

So now you’ve agreed to a 5 year deal with a player on good money and then reneged on it.
Poor Tom lol
Sometimes you have to walk away. Hopefully we have learned that lesson from the O'Meara and Wingard trades

Not reneging at all. If the eagles ask for too much that’s just the way it goes.

If we put forward a more than reasonable offer that’s all we can do. If Eagles decide to hold him he can direct his anger at them.

Eagles allowing a contracted player to explore the market means that WCE do not really want to keep him. Trading Barrass is their preference.
A 4 year contract is a not all that large by today's standards. Hawks F1 on the table currently. Barrass is valued around 16-20 by the Hawks. Trading will be based around that.
He's worth a top 10 pick. 16 is not enough.

The leverage argument is being so overblown.

Hawthorn want a gun key defender and he is contracted

West Coast want to cash in on one of the few valuable veterans they have.

It is in both parties interest to get a trade done

Tom Barrass has been a good footballer but age has caught up with him. He will never be the same footballer that he has been at WC, no disgrace in that because he's 29 and WC played him in a role where he's irreparably damaged his body.
What an absolute load of BS.

It would be really bad of Hawks to whisper and chase a contracted player, and then back out. I doubt the Hawks recruiting team would do that. They will pay what they need to.

“More than reasonable”

A late first rounder and change for a contracted key position player you offered 5 years on good money.

Who is that reasonable for? Lol

Its not that we want him to leave at all its he is getting a 5 year offer and we won't match it .

We would be happy to keep him .

Yeo said on the radio the other day all the boys want him to stay .

He is contracted but if we get an offer heavily in our favour we would let him leave .

This whole myth that we need young players isn't really true .

We have been bringing in young players for 4 seasons now . Half our list is under 23 .

Its the 24- 28 year bracket we are short on especially after we delist some mid age spuds this off season

Pick 12 should be all the hawks pay here.
Yes they’ve committed to Barrass but they’d be getting fleeced paying any more
Its pick 13 and will probably be pick 15 or 16
Its clearly not enough not even close .

West coast have already said they want 2 first rounders .

What goes back with barrass is another story

I don't really think it's as simple as Hawks chasing a contracted player. Trying to be as level headed as possible, I think the situation is more both WC and Barrass had a discussion about it last year, WC said no, but we'll look at your contract or trading you again next year.

They had a discussion again this year and they asked if WC would fix his contract worth or trade him, WC said with where we are at, we are open to trading you. They reached out to Vic clubs and Hawks went all in.

I don't have any inside running on this stuff and that might all be rubbish but regardless, WC are motivated to sell like Hawks are motivated to buy, it's not like a Schultz where Freo absolutely wanted to keep him if we could.
