What about this lad? Toby Bairstow????

SARAH BIESKE

TOBY Bairstow could be the next son of a gun to make his mark at Skilled Stadium.
The 16-year-old is fast following in the footsteps of his famous father and former Geelong captain Mark Bairstow, who yesterday said he hoped to see his son wear the blue and white hoops under the national draft's father-son rule.

Young Toby is already making a name for himself in West Australian footy circles and had 15 touches and two goals in his senior debut for South Bunbury in the South West Football League last week.

Bairstow senior said at such a young age, being drafted in two years' time was certainly not a given.

But he said Toby had shown ``plenty of promise'' and was well on his way to realising his dream.

``Geelong's a great club and it was (a big part of my life) so I'd love to see him play there,'' he said.

``Toby's a Cats fan so it would be great if that opportunity arose.''

Five current Cats players were taken under the father-son rule, including brothers Gary and Nathan Ablett, Matthew Scarlett, Tim Callan and Mark Blake.

Like the younger of the Ablett brothers, Toby has not played in Western Australia's TAC Cup equivalent, the Colts competition.

Instead, Bairstow senior said the skilful half-forward was putting his talent to the test against men, some almost twice his age.

``He might look at (going to the Colts) down the track,'' Mark said.

``But at this stage he's still going to school in Bunbury and he's playing against men, which I think is just as good a test as any.''

Toby, who played for Bellarine Football League club Modewarre in 2000-01, has been likened to his Sandover Medal-winning dad, who debuted for the Cats in 1987 and was known was his prolific ball-winning skills.

He retired in 1994 and is now a successful horse trainer in Bunbury, but remains in contact with several of his former Geelong teammates.

``I still talk to Couchy (Paul Couch) and Billy Brownless and those guys,'' Bairstow said.

``You spend a lot of time at footy clubs and with your teammates so it's good to stay in touch.''

Oh its great to be a pussy fan!!

2006 looks like a tough year. We have to some juggling, methinks. Put 2 of the boys back to 2007 and Donahue back to 2008, but keep them at the club a la my suggestion on Cats Claw.

By reading the story it seems like Toby is a midfielder - what about the others?

Che i would guess is a midfielder like his old man and grandpa. Hawkins? Donahue? Couch? Neal?

Hawkins - High leaping, athletic CHF
Donohue - Forward flanker (can play KPP at junior level) with great goal sense.
Turner - Thin wingman like his dad.
Couch - Midfielder
Neal - Midfielder/Wingman.

Hawkins and Neal are certainties (or as near certainties as you can get 18 months out), the other two are only slight chances at this stage.

I doubt all four would be considered worthy.

BTW Check you PM's mate.

How big is Hawkins? Worries me though alot of midfielders and forwards but no backmen...

Tom was 195cm and 85kg when he turned 15. Not sure if he's grown since then.

This picture is from early last year, he was just 15 at the time.

The others are all pretty slight, although Adam Donohue is a solid lump of a kid. Was about 80kgs at 14 when playing for Winchelsea's Under 18 side.

Bradley Nankervis will be in the mix for 06/07 as well. From what I , hear he is starting to show a bit.Not sure of his excact age

The thing is when you have 4 FS coming , it becomes very difficult mot to be burnt. It may come down to the best at the time being picked and we miss a top kid because he is a slow developer

Not heard a thing about Bradley Nankervis. Son of Ian or Bruce?

We could do what we did with David Clarke. Take two, and send the others back to junior competition for their top age year and nab them the following year.

Che Turner has as much chance of being drafted as Rahilly has of making AA

As it stands, yeah.

He's improved out of sight in the past 12 months though, but is a long way from even VFL level.

I described him as "poo" a few months back, and stand by that.
