Recommitted Tom Mitchell [contracted and staying at Hawthorn]

If he were to be traded, what would Hawthorn get in return?

  • Two good 1st round picks

  • Top 10 pick and change

  • A 1st & a 2nd

  • Later 1st round pick

  • Two 2nd rounders

  • Early 2nd rounder

  • Other 2nd round pick

  • Less than a 2nd rounder

We are nowhere near as good. Plus he snapped his leg in half and needed it to be rebuilt so him being back to even 80% of what he was is amazing.

Also, OMeara and Worpel spend a lot more time inside.

OMeara in thr first 7 or 8 games was 1st or 2nd in clearances.

If he can't be an elite clearance mid again post-leg break, it definitely hits his value. It's at least a question mark for any prospective suitor.

For sure. But if he keeps playing as well as he did against the Swans then he has huge value without needing to top clearances.

Matt Priddis averaged 6.5 clearances a game in a team that won the spoon and 7.6 in a team that made the GF.

8 clearances a game was a one off for Mitchell, but I would expect him to average 5-6+ playing the role he does. His career numbers are actually nothing special because of his years at Sydney where he had limited opportunities to contest centre bounces. If the plan is to use him in more of an outside role (whether he moves clubs or not) I don't think that's the best use of his abilties.

Not sure what's happening.

But he just seems incapable of winning clearances this season, especially at centre bounces. Hawks ranked bottom 3 in clearance differential and this guy is a big part of it.

Previously he may be lacking defensively (really poor tackling technique) but at least offensively he was racking up clearances and setting up O'meara. This season he has just been a nothing player who is essentially a midfield version of the seagull known as Jake Lloyd. To give some context, Libba has more than DOUBLED Mitchell's clearances this year despite averaging 10 less disposals a game and playing less midfield time, which goes to show the quality of Mitchell's disposals.

Unfortunately I agree with this assignment regarding his clearances numbers. But there have been periods in games where he has been able to return to his best it's just been far to infrequent and it shows in the numbers.

His tackling was never a weakness before the shoulder injury it might be now though.

Because we have a drop off in a few areas and the general perceptions that he isn't damaging ect ... I do think he is getting underrated though. He isn't a top 10 (hell for those 2 seasons it was arguably top 3) mid right now but he is still someone you would call an A Grade mid. Has
still been our best performed Midfielder over the past season and a bit.

Laid 8 tackles v Swans the week prior.
Got coaches votes v Ess last week. Thought he was our best mid that day.

Yeah it's just the frequency in some areas that have dropped off not the ability. He has shown in patches that he is still capable to do what he did at his best.

His ability to work from contest to contest and get involved on the spread is still as strong as ever.

Dont see him leaving the hawks, if he did, probably worth around pick 8-10 or so, would probably give up a late 1st and an early third or something for him though, could see a team like geelong/richmond going after him possibly.

Mitchell would actually be a good fit at Cartlon. After Cripps and Walsh the Blues midfield falls away badly.

Very true, just feel like he would be a waste at us, hes not exactly young and were not exactly pushing for finals, so i dont think he would want to go to a club that isnt playing finals? If he does want to come, id sure as hell welcome him. Both clubs have a good history trading with each other so i think a deal would be reached. I dont know what we would have to give up but id imagine its going to revolve around our first pick one way or another.

He might be the missing link at the Blues.

The biggest issue is what a trade would look like. SPS and a first rounder for Mitchell and one of our early second rounders has been floated on our board a lot. I'm not sure of the reality of getting SPS to want to change clubs within Melbourne though.

I know Hawthorn were huge on Liam Stocker in his draft year too but he's just starting to get a run of games (albeit as a back pocket).

This will probably upset some Carlton supporters, but i just dont rate sps. He hasnt become the player we hoped he would become, i dont know if thats because of the way we have developed him, maybe a club like hawthorn could get the best out of him? He shows flashes of brilliance sometimes, then the other times he is just largely ineffective. We have been playing him out of position for 2 years now, for god knows why, so thats got something to do with it. As it stands right now, thats a trade i wouldnt mind doing to be honest.

I might be speaking out of my arse, but I imagine for most Hawks supporters, the reason we would want to trade Mitchell is the following:

- MAIN REASON: He's 28 and will most likely not be around or in his prime for our next tilt. We need to cycle in younger mids in order to create a spine ready in 3-5 years;
- He has clear high trade value due to being elite in certain categories and is getting back to his best form;
- Other mids at his age have more speculative trade value and/or offer better leadership/midfield mix qualities like JOM (doubt many teams would take him due to his injury history and need for management).

I doubt there is any Hawk supporter that doesn't rate Mitch. He's an excellent mid and hunts the ball like few others. Just don't see him being around for our next tilt and we arguably have younger mids that could play Mitch's role (just not to his output).

If he was traded, I imagine he would end up going for a late first just due to his overall profile (but what do I know XD). Funnily enough a similar trade value for when we first grabbed him from the Swans.

Rough when you are getting torched for trades from 20 years ago. Surely a Freo fan would know that. I'm sure the Frank Matera video is still doing the rounds somewhere on the internet.

Hawthorn took the contracts of Scully and Patton, overpaid for O'Meara and Wingard, and let Mitchell, Lewis, Smith and Birchall go for peanuts so they aren't monsters. A bit delusional like their fans, sure.
