Interesting article by Jessica Halloran in the Daily Telegraph, who believes that there should be more diversity in the AFL media.

In fact, there are only white men, talking about the live AFL games on TV.

Once the ball is bounced not a single woman features during an AFL men’s match.

The AFL broadcast media can’t be called a boys’ club – it is more like a fortress.

Jezzus croist this irks me to no end. Now as a knee jerk reaction they'll probably get more involved. Why would you want the job. Hey we aren't giving you this job because your good or anything. We are giving it to you because all the spots are almost full and we need a token minority to fill the last spot. On the Swans board we have been having a discussion about who are the worst football journos/commentators at the moment and one of our posters came up with this list:

Of course, this is entirely subjective, and it's written from a Swans perspective, but let's be honest there is not a lot of quality there. Where are the next Huddos and Whateleys in the footy media? I agree that forcing diversity for the sake of it is ridiculous, but let's start with getting the most qualified people for the job first. I dare say that if you do that, you will probably start to see a few more women in the media anyway.

On the flip side, I would love to see a female commentator if she had the ability to engage the audience with the right experience, in depth knowledge
and the right personality.

Equality in gender with regards to any type of work should be by the right candidate and NOT because it should be for the "community".

Enough of this PC crap already I say. True feminists would not accept a "token" position based on community "expectations".

Yeah that's why I qualified my post - the list is actually worst commentators/journos in terms of bias against the Swans, but my point still stands

He's not a bad commentator, but he is too conflicted with his dual roles IMO.

I'd suggest there are a large number of people (more than a few of whom aren't white or male) in the Australian media industry who are more qualified than people like Barry Hall, Tony Shaw, Derm and the like. The only criteria for getting a job in the footy media is knowing the right people.

Honestly, you could probably give half the people on this site some media training and get better analysis than we do from half the people in the footy media.
