Tbh I'm pretty happy with Keath and Gards with Young, Cordy, Schache as backup. I don't think KPD is an area of need for us despite the popular narrative about our KPD stocks being weak. I don't remember any key forwards really getting on top of us this season apart from Wright which was obviously a freak event. I'd rather we put all of our resources into a ruck.
Especially with everyone saying KPD is Darcy's best position too. If we do trade in another I wouldn't want it to be costly.

Agree it’s not a huge need and more than comfortable with Keath & Gardner as the main two but it would be a nice luxury to add a genuine intercepting specialist to partner Keath - the Lever to our May etc. When Keaths available I have no dramas rolling Gardner, Cordy, Schache, Young whoever through there but it gets pretty bloody dire if we lose Keath and we’re relying on two of the above. Only way we’re going to afford someone like that is to draft and develop you’d think. Agree that all our focus needs to be on a ruck but if someone did come pop up who was first team quality and definitively better than our other options then I would jump at the opportunity to bring them in - guys like Tarrant/Clurey/Leinhart/Kelly etc are of no use to us. We don’t need more depth or average battlers in that position.

I’d still focus on developing Schache they’re all preseason, I think he could be a great partner for Keath.

Wouldn’t give Tarrant two years at this stage of his career.

yeah, Im not sure a 30+ CHB is what we need. For a ruck, we needed a temporary stopgap/chop out so it makes sense (plus he was cheap as chips), but I think we to be looking at a young key defender who can grow with the team and give us a fair few years.

Intercepters are a luxury, and it's almost the equivalent of saying "yeah we could do with an elite, really good player". There's a reason Lever and Aliir are getting paid the money, they are, it's because their skills are as rare as hen's teeth. Saying "we could use an intercepter" is like saying "we could use a player who gets six clearances a game" or "we could use a player who takes marks inside 50". It's just one and the same as "good player".

I think structurally, we need a third tall defender, one that can use the ball, more than we need an interceptor. Teams with good interceptors often play one loose behind the stoppage, whereas we don't - we let the opposition have the loose, play +1 at the stoppage and even still often bring a high-half back like Daneil up to the stoppage making it at +2. It's just not really our need because it's not our style.

Schache hasn't played enough in defence to be a natural back half ball user, even if he has the theoretical skills, and Cordy, Keath and Gardner aren't ball users, even if Keath is a good 55m long kick and Cordy is surprisngly good at getting boot to ball in traffic. In other words, we need a KPD who can take kick-ins in a pinch, can defend smalls in a pinch, and if we switch play on the half-back line, we're happy to take that option (rather than avoid it at times when it involves any of those 3 KPD's). We've also alternated between three and two tall defenders at different stages in the year, trying to balance better ball use with 2 talls with better defensive structures with 3 talls.

In other words we should get Jarrod Brander, who is a very nice kick for his 195cms.

Not sure what it would take, talking ruckman Marshall is the one I’d be all in on.
25. Changes games and only contracted to the end of next year.
saints going nowhere. Come over here son.

What would you give up in terms of players to get that done? We don't have a lot of draft capital so would have to be player/ players to get it over the line.
Agree if we could get him in it would be a massive upgrade, just not sold that the benefit would out weigh the cost.

Saints would love Lippy, apart from Steele their midfield is ageing and average.

Yeah not sure how we would get it done

Controversial I know but I’d do Marra.
Kid may be a freak, reckon Marshall is worth the risk for our team.

I dont care if Marshal is the second coming, I want to watch Naughton and Marra terrorizing opposition defenders for the next 10 years.

Just the for the lolz

While I'm in the, 'anyone is tradable for the right price' category, you'd have to admit the glimpses that the kids gave us this season, despite still being very raw, are priceless.

I hope we don’t lose Lipinski but let’s assume we do. He is restricted and we have made him an off - this serves three purposes:

1. we are committed to you over the longer haul and think you will make our team. We would not waste a three year deal in any other circumstances. In the engine side with great skills - we are very reliant on Jack Macrae - this is who I think he is closest too. Not fast but great skills and fast decision making to set up play. Macrae and Pendlebury and Kennedy (from previous years are best in the league. Given Dunkley is Ok in that role and West is up and coming we don’t need him as much as most other teams do so it will be very hard to compete on price - if it comes down to this we lose him.

2. He is restricted and so we can match an offer from say Collingwood - only Sam Power can get people for nothing so you have to pay a fair price.

3. If they walk him through the draft - the expect others to take him (North wood take him in a flash unless someone is better - he is what they need also) - so risk unless you are wooden spooners and that is part of the rebalancing - so they do get that advantage. But if this happens we don’t want to AFL to give us F/A compo so this set the minimum. Compo if a second round would cover our points problem for Darcy.

So a smart play would be to offer him high salary and long contract if you feel he wants to go anyway.
