Tom Lynch (Crom) is joining North as a development coach, might play VFL unless he gets rookie listed.

He was mentioned as a Bruce stop-gap, but sounds like he’s pretty much cooked

A 1 year rookie + 1 year assistant coaching deal isn't a bad move for both parties.
I'm expecting we'll start gettggn some Bulldog news tomorrow

From the sound of this, Mason Cox would cost pretty much nothing.

A Cox/Lynch package wouldn't be the worst idea. Stef's cooked, English is more forward than ruck and Sweet isn't ready. I think Max Lynch would be ready for first ruck duties for many clubs from next year.

Does Mason Cox actually have ruck craft or is he just Tall?

Mason Cox, quite inexplicably, has won less than 50% of the hitouts in the ruck contests he's been involved in in his career, despite being literally the tallest player ever to play the game at league level

I know people ridicule Rendell, but he was a multiple All-Australian level ruckman and was a ruck coach for a few years, working directly with Cox - he thinks Cox's ruck craft is fine and he'd be a good option as a full time ruck.

One of these grabs is from the trade period last year when we were looking at him, and the other a few months back:

There are 4 rucks in the entire AFL that have a hitout win rate over 50%.

Preuss 56.4%
Gawn 55.1%
Naitanui 53.4%
Darcy 51.1%

Cox has a rate of 49.2%. So he's basically right up there with the best of the best. Hitout win percentage isn't really a metric to use to criticise Cox. For reference, his hitout to advantage rate is 26.7%. Naitanui is the lowest of those 4 on 29.6%, so not really that far ahead regardless.

None of those players are 211cm tall though, and Cox is more coordinated than your Peter Street types.

Rendell leaves himself open to criticism when he says that Darcy Moore would win a Brownlow in the ruck.

Bloke's a massive flogsock with zero clue.

So I'm assuming then a lot of ruck contests neither wins?

We really don’t need a lot of change whatsoever - anyone who thinks the grandfinalists need to make drastic change is crazy. We were in the top 2 teams of the year for what 22/25 weeks of the season?

I’m stoked Kings gone to be honest - our midfield is literally 50% better than the next best in the comp and whilst we win the midfield battle a lot that’s just down to talent. Im hoping a new midfield coach can get the boys working as a team. Obviously a ruckman is a big part of this too, surely Bev has realised he’s wrong now. He was ahead of the game in 2016, he was right. Ruckman weren’t important, so long as they could cover ground and have an impact around the ground your 3rd man up would make up for their lack of ability.

unfortunately that was short lived and right now ruckman are probably more important that they’ve ever been. The competition is so even every edge is super important yet we’re conceding first use, we’re conceding the ability to back ourselves in attacking positions. We’re starting off the back foot before the balls even in play ffs. If Bev hasn’t figured this out by now Then I dunno what to do.

Backlines fine, obviously an upgrade on Gardner would be great but it’s not a necessity. I’d love a good third tall the more I think about it. We have to phase Wood out. Schache to defence over preseason.

Forward line is extremely promising, Jamarra should play from round one alongside Naughty & Timmy.

people acting like how do we beat Melbourne next year, get a grip. They didn’t even make finals the year before they’re not some super force that can’t be stopped. Imagine what they thought at the end of 2020?

our forward line in particular has huge upside. Probably more upside than any team in the comp. Our number one key forward is a 21 year old whose rate of improvement exceeds that of any player in the comp. our 2nd KPF is a generational talent. Weightman is in the top 2 young small forwards in the league. Garcia & VDM are awesome grunt. English was the best 3rd forward utility in the comp for a couple of months and will get back there.

We have 3mids in Baz, Adzy and Bont who could realistically average 5 goals between them a game.

we have weapons everywhere, and now every been burnt. other teams should be terrified at the prospect of coming up against us next year
This 100%

I thought Stef was cooked but he did exactly what was asked of him in the Gf. Gawn nullified to an extent. He is worth a rookie spot.

Certainly don't need my reading glasses for this post.

In a decent side he might win one as a CHB
Or at least pill the most votes outside mid fielders

Cox at centre bounce is different to Cox around the grounds.
Around the ground smarter rucks use their bulk to keep him from the fall of the ball.

I would get a specialist ruck coach ASAP

Yep. Cant keeping working around the elephant in the room. It wasn't just the GF where we fell apart with few quick goals out of the centre. Its just those other occasions we managed to steady the ship and adjust.

With king leaving is ash going to take on that role?

We need a specialist stoppage coach to be honest, I believe Corey was working with this in the past?

Ruck coach is a waste of resources in this small soft cap world. Stef on a playing contract is your specialist ruck coach

So I'm assuming then a lot of ruck contests neither wins?
Yeah, it's difficult to find data on comparative win rates. So if Cox only wins 40% of contests on a given day, but he was up against Gawn who also only won 40%, then it's actually a decent result, but it might otherwise appear like he's been beaten since there's the other 60% unaccounted for in the individual players' stats.

I’m was just using Dale as an example that height is not the be all and end all. Rampe another great example. Heath Grundy and Hurley went ok at times too. We just need a strong bodied defender to help the zone.

And McGovern of the Eagles 1.9m

Gawn is 208cm, which is practically a rounding error between them. The extra 3cm isn't giving Cox any real advantage once you're already at that height. Comparing him to Stef Martin (199cm) it's fair enough to call out a height difference, but not really with Gawn
