Yeah I find this strange, considering Macca If he remained as our coach had already told MBoyd and Moz they were out of contract at the end of 2014. Instead under Bevo they became premiership players.
He also told Wood he was a lockdown defender and nothing else.

He was an AA premiership captain two years later.

But I won’t derail the discussion further.

I thought Bevo shifting him to HB extended his career by a year or two.

Oh absolutely. But that was supposedly happier times, if you believe they ultimately parted on less amicable terms. But I suspect, like Scott West and others, the cold light of day showed their time was up, and the coach was right. As a club historically though, we seem to avoid those calls much of the time.

(Matty Croft's time was up too - but I reckon he had a fair case during that final season that he could have contributed more in the seniors than at Willi(?), with experience and a big body, in light of Rawlings struggling, and an 8-game losing streak under our Mastermind!)

The coaching cull has begun with RS not being offered another contract

Can't help but feel sorry for the guy who's a heart and soul bulldog and it's not like he's had the cattle on the park albeit with injuries and talent
Was actually his decision coz he bleeds rwb, was never going anywhere else. He needs a timeout from footy

I have no idea which coach is doing a good or a bad job but am sorry to see a club stalwart out of a job. Someone posted on here a while back that Rohan did a very good job in his development role. Maybe he should have been tried there again.

Spoke to someone from the side a while back and they confirmed the Bevo issues with Roughead and Dahlhaus were real to the extent it might be a little bit awkward at the reunion (but not fatally).

Then you have the likes of Hunter and Stringer.

I’m pro-Bevo but he does occasionally seem to end up at loggerheads with players. To some extent it goes hand in hand with being head coach, but I suspect he could do better.

What was the basis for the dispute with Rough?

Roughead situation is disappointing, as he wasn't an off field dunce like the others, plus was AFLW assistant at the time. He's a pretty smart guy with Bulldog roots - I'm disappointed he seems to now be a dyed in the wool Magpie, hopefully Bevo's handling of him and his disillusionment when traded can be patched up one day.

Agree has been at the club for 28 years and can guarantee there will be a few upset players about this

Would have thought could have had him involved in some other capacity
He would be on too much money to perform a bit part role in some other capacity.

Either you keep him as line coach or unfortunately you have to let him go.

Boyd had to wear a helmet in 2017 because of a rare and unusual badly cut ear injury in pre-season and was never the same player after that. Once it became clear 6-8 games into that 2017 season his form had massively dropped off - even as we were still pushing for finals - there was really no upside to playing a 34-year-old in a hope that they'd find the form that they'd quickly lost it.

Fact of the matter is despite averaging over 27 touches for each of 15 and 16, between getting 26 touches in the opening game and 33 in his farewell game, he did not get more than 23 touches in any individual game.

Funnily enough the 3 games he played one-off through the season were probably his better games and maybe gave claims to the fact he should have been picked for more. But he was... not great between rounds 2 and 7 of that season, and purely on form was justified in being dropped.

My bad Geoff and apologies to Mojo. Totally misread it. Thats what happens when you're old!!!! Plus I'm a great fan of Catch 22, but haven't read it for donkeys years.

Hey no apology required Olde 54, think Mojo and I got a laugh out of it. I'm in the 'old' camp myself, I believe Mojorisin is thereabouts as well.

At least we can laugh at ourselves, unlike these Gen Y/Gen Z/Gen Alpha/AI johnny-come-latelies!

Re: Roughie we maybe should have seen the forrest through the threes and kept him on to help with other parts of the program and had him play as a break glass in case of emergency. Trading him based on form only was totally the right call, could barely run out a game and usually spent more time on the ground/in the rooms when he did play. His Indian summer with the Pies came out of nowhere, their mature backline definitely helped him and I’m glad he got a couple of more of footy out of his body.

Would be ok with that. Has a nice block of assistant experience now.

What’s the go with this? Have read it several times over the years but no one really said what happened.

Is it legit or just fluff?
I don’t think it’s a major thing but they’re just very different characters. I don’t think Boyd was happy with how his last season was handled.

Now being a coach you would hope Boydy sees things from the perspective of the football department/coaching group rather than that of a player. Freo is going through it themselves with Nat Fyfe now, inexplicably extending him for two years when his form would have warranted a 1 year deal at best.

Yes no apologies needed!

Pissed off about Smiffy. Of all the assistants to go, he's the one. This isn't the big cleanout. It's a token effort. Why haven't they told anyone else if they are going to get rid of any others? NOT happy Jan.

There were a few moments in the 2016 finals series where I thought he was starting to look like the pace of the game was a bit out of his reach. He still mostly played well but I know the club was taking a wait-and-see approach to re-signing him.

I guess when he got AA and a flag they couldn’t tap him on the shoulder but he was noticeably slowing down.
