The old Trade and List Management thread is now more than 900 pages long, so it is certainly time to open a new one. Shout out to Norm De Guerre for starting the original thread many years ago - thanks Norm.

The legendary Lore has each year constructed a spreadsheet that tracks the draft picks for the year and for each club. With her permission, we publish below Lore's draft pick tracker:

This is where the separation from emotion comes into play.

Everyone would love to be able to leave their job, through their choice, work elsewhere and have your former employer pay the gap because you didnt feel that your skills were being utilised to their capability.

He worked his previous playing contracts and was compensated accordingly

Needless to say that concepts of "other jobs" and "former employers" don't entirely apply to the AFL as it's a unique environment as evidenced by the fact that there's 100% union membership and a unique collective bargaining agreement ... other employers aren't bound by a salary cap, the majority of a population don't sign contracts on a 1-9 year basis, and the purpose of most companies is to generate a profit for shareholders, not to win games of sport as a primary objective.

Our lurking around Houston is interesting.

If a club comes to us with a pick inside 10 for Smith and we can use that (and maybe a future second) then we do it.
Unfortunately I don't think a club with a top 10 pick is coming any time soon. Smith still needs to agree to go there for us to get the pick, so don't hold your breath.

Aside from that, I understand Houston is a great player, but I'm not sure that we should be giving up the multiple picks that Port would want for him. We need to start replenishing our aging midfield and targeting a small defender and small fwd.
I like Houston as a player, but think we have bigger needs considering that Tassie are coming and if we don't start getting some qualioty young players in, we'll be well behind the pack in 5yrs time.

What I find most interesting is the constant talk of Butters. Is anyone confident he would come to the dogs and would port be willing to let him go?

Snowflake's chance in hell Port entertain offers for Butters, and the fact he used to support the dogs is nowhere enough a reason to switch clubs. He could name his price at any club.

I'm just glad we've finally moved on from McStay talk every offseason

Port would sign him to a 10 year deal tomorrow if they could, but if Butters decides to pull a Danger and want to go home their hands are tied.

He's not a free agent until 2026 and even then it'll just be a RFA, so Port can and would match any offer made and force a trade. The trade cost of getting Butters whether it's this year, next year or the year after would be enormous, albeit lower each year that goes on. I can't see how we could satisfy a trade this year, even with whatever we get for Smith. I don't think Geelong's first, and two future firsts would cut it for Port.

If Butters ever leaves it won't be this off-season, it would be at the end of 2025 or in an extreme case 2026. Yes Port would match but like 99.99% of the time he would end up wherever he wanted to be traded to.

In much of the same reason we didn't let go of Dunkley in the midst of four consecutive years of playing finals, agreed, Port would simply want to hold onto a player that might help them win the flag in 2025.

This. Those extra years of Dunkley got us a prelim win, and like many fans I saw 7 losing prelims in a row.

Dunkley won our best and fairest and got our most Brownlow votes in 2022. Though it didn't in a direct, literal sense make a difference (a lot of his best games for us that season were in losses so it's not as if he was a sole difference maker in turning losses into wins), in a more general sense, the extent of the success we had in 2022 by making finals and playing in a finals game competitively was due to Dunkley. We may not have won the flag with Dunkley in 2022 but we clearly and certainly were not more likely to have won it, had we traded him to Essendon at the end of 2020, given his form.
