If you are going to bad mouth me, at least have the stones to tag me in.

Melksham and Hibbo were out of contract and requested trades. Long is contracted and doesnt want to leave.
Apples and oranges.

The guy got a Rising star nomination this year, is under contract, doesnt want to leave, and more importantly - there is no indication that the Saints have any interest in moving him.

You reckon a third still gets it done?
How many 21 yo, contracted RS star nominees get traded for future 3rd rounders?

Francis has played 9 games since being drafted in 2015 - before Long.
He only played 5 this year, but was a rising star and is under contract just like Long.

I take it then all you would ask is a 3rd rounder if a club came knocking?

Nonsense.

Francis was pick 5 not 25 and he has shown more in his last 5 games thsn Long has in his entire career.

Long also wasnt a 17 yr old when drafted he was a year older. He hasnt shown much as a 19 yr old or 20 year old.

Hes also likely quick small forward depth for us and if from warrants pushes out a Baguley if he managers to stay on the list. Giving up a 2nd round pick for him in a strong draft would be crazy IMO.

So tell me, why is giving up pick 9 + pick 14-18 (next yr) for an in contract top 10-12 midfielder too much?

Because it's not just a trade for GWS, it's a salary dump as well. Shiel off the books increases their chances of keeping players they rate above him at their club. Same reason Lobb is being let go... they must really rate their young ruckmen internally though they might not be ready just yet so Simpson and maybe Mummy will take that role next year.

Dont believe that story.

They have absolutely no need to dump Shiel.

They know they cant extend all of Kelly, Cogs, Shiel next yr so are prepared to trade Shiel this yr in order to get value.

They are offloading Setters, Lobb, Finlayson etc already. They are not that up against the cap as a surprise that they all of a sudden have to give Shiel away.

This notion that we are doing them a favor by taking him is wrong. We have to pony up in order to get one of the best mids in the AFL, who is under contract.

Lobb is not a ruckman and doesnt want to play ruck.

How are North fitting in all these midfielders.

Ziebell, Cunnington, Higgins, Jacobs, Tyson, Dumont, Polec, Ahern, LDU, L.Mcdonald

Probably forgot some aswell
Hall.

There’s been reports that they’re up to $2m over the cap for 2019 already. It was a strategic move to hopefully win a flag.

We’re not doing them a favour of course, but they do need to shift somebody on big money - and he’s the one they’re getting rid of because he’d have left next year anyway.

So you say something in response cordially,
Then mere minutes later...

Im mean seriously - If you are going to bad mouth me, at least have the stones to tag me in.

I get your point but since you mentioned apples and oranges....I think in future you should never mention my boy Francis in the same breath as Ben Long, thanks

Obviously two very different prospects i agree haha

The comparison was purely to say that contacted, young talent doesnt go for future 3rd rounders - especially when they dont want to go
We wouldnt expect tha little for one pf pur young guns, why would we expect thst for Long and St Kilda was more the point

Pick 9 and Future 3rd(Ess) for 16 and 21 which will at least get pushed back another spot ie picks 17 and 22 (Crows) once Blakey moves ahead for Sydney

Pick 9 allows them potentially access to Rozee or Hateley.

It also moves them in front of Port Adelaides picks 10 and 11 by having picks 8 and 9 could allow a coupling of SA players ie Rozee and Hateley

2 of picks 16,21, (2019 1st round) for Shiel starting with 16 and 21 this year

I reckon gws would just rather a higher selection.

Yep agreed, have to look at it as if the shoe was on the other foot. Yes Long may only be worth a 3rd rounder in our opinion, but we would have to pay a higher price since he is contracted and there isn't any indication from him that he no longer wants to play for the Saints. I do think we need a small forward type like him, will have to look elsewhere though I'm guessing

Ben Long would be a great addition as a (forward) Baguley replacement as that athletic, pressure, hard tackling forward. This would potentially allow Walla and Fantasia to play more minutes up the field. Laverde could potentially play this role, but i worry that we would be to tall with him, Stringer, Mckernan & Daniher all down there.

Whats his value pick number?

Would you give us pick 34 which i believe will now become pick 33 for him? Surely too much. We dont have a 3rd rounder this year.

A future 2nd could potentially range from say pick 21-39 next year for me thats too risky id rather wait a year when hes uncontracted or offer a future 3rd which ranges from 40-58. Youd hope not 40-46

So you’re saying he’s worth the same if not better than Hibberd? Nonsense in itself.

Never said saints would trade him but 3rd rounder is his worth.

Frivolous discussion as saints have declared off the table anyway.

What else you whining about? Because I didn’t tag you? Wowee? Tissue?

I'M BACK! :)

Shiel was never in doubt, always wanted to come to us since before Goddard decision made public. Paul just doing his due diligence played the field nicely and got us to lift our offer and at the same time exclamation pointed Shiels move was a pure footy desicion by Shiel, it also gave the club a great feel and traction into next season.
