Rutten today suggested that Joe is on the road to recovery. He also noted that he is contracted for one more year. I'm starting to think this is all part of contract extension issues. But if he's recovering then pay the man what he wants.

What if he wants 4 mill over the next 4 year extension? you paying it to him right now and signing off on it?

Yep
The longer we keep the spine together the better.

Ryder wouldnt of been a bad stop gap but honestly I've no doubt a portion of our fans would've booed him and it would've been embarrassing so I'm glad it didnt happen.
Yep
And a stop gap isn't what we're after
Draper is yet to be tested at AFL level.
We really should be looking for someone who can challenge him for #1 at the same time.

Not surprised to see Ryder nominate St Kilda. Him & Carlise were pretty close friends while at the club.

They share a common brain cell as well

Why?

Draper is coming off an ACL, he isn't come back from heart surgery. He'll be fine. Ideally getting a guy who can challenge TBC for a year or two is better served than banking on trying to get another #2 ruck on our list.

I'm sorry but I haven't seen anything from him that makes me think he can make it. But hey a pre-season or two could prove me wrong and i'd be happy if that was the case.

I am not saying he will be anything other than to say from the few games with Sandy and the 10 or so he played with us that I have seen he has shown enough for someone to maybe interested in him as a rookie. I just think you under rate the quality of some VFL rucks who despite not being up to AFL still have a number of years and ruck craft over 19 year old players out of the TAC.

He may not be that good. He may do the ACL again. etc etc.

TBC
Draper
A young ruck who can challenge for #1 in 2020
Perhaps a project if one is available (Bowman?). TBC will retire soon enough.

I'd feel comfortable we have ruck sorted if we can do that.

Draper is unlikely to be back to where he was until mid season and to be blunt I am hoping we can find someone to pressure big cream puff before then.

In comparison Fin ice Smuggler Mabior Chol played 12 games (Bowman 13) and averaged 11 possessions (Bowman 12), 3 marks (Bowman 2.93), 9 hitouts (Bowman 22), 4 tackles (Bowman 3.7 tackles).

Even a more comparatively even player is Western Bulldogs 21 year old South Australian Jordan Sweet who averaged 8 possessions (Bowman 12), tackles 3 (Bowman 3.7), 1 mark (Bowman 2.93) whilst his hitout numbers were supreme as a more mature 1st ruck choice (avraged 38 > Bowman's 22).

In case you did miss some of his games, he took some big pack marks (1 every two games), contributes around the ground (as his possession count suggests), and whilst he may not win the hitouts, he is prepared to get his knees dirty as evidenced by his tackle numbers (3.7).

So it may seem far fetched for some, but to the naked eye, you can see that Riley has the tools to make a good fist of it. The feel for the game is what impresses me, the ability to get involved, to kick goals (only 3 at VFL level but he's averaged almost 1 a gamme at TAC Cup level for the past two seasons [18/19]).

May not be your cup of tea, but he could be someone worth giving a shot to as someone with plenty of upside.
I took Bowman in last years phantom draft and reckon he will be okay in TIME.
There are a couple of rucks in this years draft who probably have bigger ceilings.
It really comes down to Essendons strategy moving forward.

What are they like as forwards?

Just want to put this out there that I would still be actively looking for a mature ruck so we can retire Zac Clarke. Bowman won’t be playing senior football in 2020 obviously but he could fill that developing ruck void that Draper has left next year though.
