I can't believe all the negativity around Lake.

Yeah he's apparently a goose but he is a bloody good defender. Would instantly add some dependability to our side. Best of all he takes contested marks which our current defense refuse to do.

Lake was back to playing good footy again this year. And given his age would never command a first rounder.

I'd have him in a heartbeat.

Its the cost and age. He's a two year proposition, three tops when we need to be thinking with a longer time horizon.

The only bonus I can think of strategically is that he can free up a lot of cap space coming off the books after two seasons. I'm predicting the NBA phrase "expiring contract" to become part of the AFL argot in 2013.

Personally I don't think we need to be that active as some suggest in the trade period, but if we were to bolster certain area's I'm hoping it's the midfield. The draft is good this year so I'd like our recruiters to look for some good future mids.

If Hodge can get fully fit it will be like having a new recruit. If Hodge can recapture that 2010 form it will make the midfield so much better. Same with Shiels being released from his tagging job to go back to his 2011 ball winning style giving us another avenue to a clearance.

These "two years" could be back-to-back with a guy of his calibre

The more talk about Lake, the more I like, maybe he will bring our 11th Premiership and also if we can find a good midfielder like a Brent Moloney

Lake is a supremely talented defender, He's probably one of the best 1 on 1 defenders going around, hard to think of last time someone absolutly wiped the floor with him

Ild jump at it
if people are correct, we cannot afford $700K, just cannot fit into our salary pack. We don't need to get a super star either. What is the difference with getting someone like pears and what would he cost per year, $300K? and in terms of trade, surely him at fb and roughead at chb should be enough.

Lake would be a great acquisition. But going to cost a lot. Would take the pressure off Schoey which could be the best thing for him and actually let him develop outside of the spotlight. Thing is, do you throw your whole wage structure out for a Lake to win a flag??

To be honest, you probably would. Short term pain/short term gain.

I just can't see it happening with Lake, he's too old, Its a long way off our recruiting strategy........I think its just another Hawthorn smoke screen,

Lake plays for himself and doesn't always heed the coach's instructions. Wouldn't last five minutes in Clarkson's team ethos. No thanks.
I keep reading this, but I don't see it.

I don;t believe we were ever into Caddy, another Gold Coast player is more likely.

Nor do I think we'll go for Brown or Rivers or Stevens.

Long time listener first time caller here lol.

Grizz, would the other more likely Gold Coast player happen to be Maverick Weller or Charlie Dixon?
Obviously there is recent bf talk regarding Weller but I did read something about us offering Dixon a contract before he signed with GC a month or so ago. I know contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on these days but......

Over to you!

I think Steven May's name may also have been mentioned after his solid game against us late in the season.

Grizz who are we after up north?

HAWTHORN is believed to be targeting a key defender in the ilk of Western Bulldogs star Brian Lake.
The Hawks have also showed some interest in Carlton’s Bret Thornton, as they have in previous years.
The Hawks are also keen on adding Gold Coast midfielder Maverick Weller to the mix, with the Hawks prepared to throw a second round draft pick at the Suns for Weller.

Yes Bret Thornton, I knew the dream was still alive.

I'll throw up if we go for Thornton!!!

That's timid. How about feed yourself through a tree shredder? That would, metaphorically speaking, be my general reaction.
