Regardless of what happens this year we always need to be looking to the future. Over recent seasons we have been very good at identifying players at other club who can add to our group.
A couple of fringe players I would monitior closely are Ben Griffiths at Richmond and Pat Karnezis at the Lions.
You may remember Griffiths dominating us at the G a couple of years back and he hasnt been able to get his body right. As a result, the Tigers backline is pretty settled is is struggling to get a look in. Blokes his height and skill set don't grow on trees and Lake and Gibbo are closer to the end then the beginning. Litherland and Kelly are doing an apprenticeship but at around the 190cm are not going to be able to play on the gorillas.
Lt's not forget although Shoey will be back next year (long term CHB), it takes a good 12 months to successfully get over a reco.
As for Karenezis, for someone with so much talent he struggles to hold a regular place in a very ordinary Lions side. Is it attitude? Coaching? Development? Based on talent / potential, he has plenty of upside. Can play at either end of the ground and in the NEAFL (yes, I acknowledge sub-standard but Zorko did get drafted) he regularly collects 35+ through the mid-field.
Furthermore, he is a Melbourne boy and is apparently restless up north.
Neither player is going to cost you the farm and might be worth looking at.
Thoughts?
