Me gusta mucho....

BILLY HARTUNG
177cm, 75kg
Club: Dandenong Stingrays
A running machine who smashed Brad Hill's all-time beep test record at draft camp (16.6) and boasts elite foot skills. A run-and-carry specialist the Saints are monitoring closely to help give them some outside dash.
Nah, for me he is pretty overrated. His foot skills are good but I wouldn't call them that great. Don't get me wrong he will be a good player but there are better than him and ones that will be available at our pick

So........ Ben McEvoy and Billy Hartung for Shane Savage, Luke Dunstan and Blake Acres. Wonder how this will play out??
None of Luke Dunstan, Blake Acres or Shane Savage is a ruck man.

We filled a crucial need. I would rather have a ruck man than no ruck man and an unknown prodigy.

Why do you think Carlton are so bad? All they do is fill up with midfielder with okay KPP. It is a balance.

Carlton and their midfielders. It's quite amusing.

Maybe hold back on the cheering until he plays a game for the club :p

He'll be good don't worry. The kid is a jet. Recruiting team have a clear agenda which is to bring in endurance to the club and lots of it in order to get the edge with limited interchanges. What's more with Hartung they get a left footer which is also tactical advantage that we seem to have identified. Love the kid and positive about the future. He's a great pick up :)

From the highlights he appears to be a right footer but agree that he looks like a potential star. I was amazed at his ability to run full pelt, evading tackles yet hit targets with precision. Think we have done very well in the draft.

Yeah, I don't think so. Being a left footer is not a tactical advantage and selections are not done on this basis. No matter what foot you kick with, if you can hit your target then you will be considered.

By the sounds of it he plays equally well on both sides....

"FOR A long while, Hartung has known he wanted to be an AFL footballer. As a 15-year-old he quit cricket to take up triathlons over summer, so he could grow his running ability. He worked so hard on improving his left-foot kick (he is naturally a right-footer), that the left side almost became his preferred option."

I remember seeing that we drafted Hill and felt underwhelmed. I remember watching his highlights package and feeling underwhelmed. I remember watching him play his first game and thinking he will be a gun :D his highlights didn't do his poise and decision making a whole lot of justice.

Like Hill I was also underwhelmed when I heard Hartung was our pick. I had expected us to go for a bigger crash and bash sort of midfielder and Dumont available (and one of my favourite of the draftees) I was kind of disappointed. However that disappointment quickly evaporated when I checked out Billy's highlights. He has flair, creativity, balls to the take the game on and is very clean with the ball. That said they are only highlights so I'll leave my reservations til he plays a game :)

Ah **** being reserved we got ourselves a 250 game champion :p

I'm giving you a ribbing for saying that there will be better players available at #24 after I had said that Id love to get him to the club .... and then us taking him at #24.

I still think there were better players available at pick 24. Juts because we picked him at 24 doesn't mean I think he was the best available. I think the club just focused more on a running type player whereas I would have taken Taylor before Hartung.

Still think Hartung will be a good player but there is just something special about Taylor I think

Club was focused on this interchange cap. Wright said so himself. They're looking to build a team with elite endurance who can run out games. Hartung fits that agenda I guess.

Yea definitely the right fit for what they were wanting. Also really surprised we didn't pick up Tsitas, really hope we do in the rookie draft

Just remember they are his highlights. He may well have missed the target many times but you wouldn't see it in his highlights video!

We don't tend to recruit too many players who aren't skilled by foot. Our drafting has been good the past few years so I'll remain optimistic about Billy until I see something that tells me otherwise. Every first round pick is a future superstar in November ;)

We won critical games this year because the players were managed beautifully to endure 2hrs of elite gamesmanship. Contributions by the running and endurance of Hill and Smith made this easier. Imagine having another player of similar quality running around in the team! Also Drafting players with similar traits, in a way, makes those players (Hill & Smith) feel that if they have poor season there will be player that can take their spot. A lot to like about the recruiting strategy when one considers what was available for our pick.
