Sensational morning out at Waverley and a great session to be at.

After some warm up exercises and fairly intense ball based drills, all bar a handful of players took part in a full ground match sim of 2x15 minute halves with two actual umpires officiating.

Players not involved were Big Boy, Cousins, Jones, Duryea, Ceglar, Willsmore and Birchall. The first four ran laps while Ceglar, Birchall and Willsmore did some work and left early. Langford was not present. Kurt H was present and did some drills but left early. Nothing to be concerned about there.

Mosquito was present and was involved in all of the pre match sim ball drills. He's a reasonably solid kid with some nice clean skills.

Now onto the match sim.

The highlight for me was the Jaeger v Mitchell contest in the middle. Both were outstanding with Jaegar taking the chocolates. There was barely a clearance that did not begin with Jaegar, and he would then break away to create an option further up the ground. Jaegar also spent time on the wing using his pace to advantage. I'm not sure I have seen anyone with hands as quick as Jaegar's. He will pick up the ball one handed and dish off a bullet like handball in one action.

Tom was also excellent for the yellow team, with Worpel supporting him well in the middle.

It needs to be noted that the grey team was stacked with more experienced players. Mitchell was probably the only A grader on the yellow team from memory along with Burton and Howe.

Rough dominated for the grey team just doing as he pleased in the goal square. Mirra was given a footy lesson by Rough today.

Impey was an interesting one. Playing for the grey team, was a OK but a bit hot and cold in the first half but came alive in the second half, playing at half forward, running exteremly hard to receive the ball, taking marks and kicked a couple of great goals, three all up. If he can do that consistently then we have a gem. He would have been close to best on in the second half.

Sicily was outstanding playing in defence with his contested marking a real highlight and his elite kicking used to perfection. He got caught holding the ball by Miles at one stage but immediately bounced back with a great chase and tackle to win a free.

Burton was all class deep in defence for the yellow team, and considering that 75% of the game was played in that half he had his work cut out. He was able to repel the opposition attacks time after time.

Whitecross was another candidate for best on ground. Played in the midddle and was influential from start to finish. He looks to have picked up an extra yard of pace. He is also one of the dominant leaders on the field.

Mitchell Lewis was probaly the real suprise packet to those of us watching. He was extremely good. Rucked against Pitto and did well, was able to direct some of his taps to Mitchell, but his work around the ground was excellent. He moves really well for a guy his size and was very clean. He was invloved in almost every good passage play for the yellow team. If he gets an injury free run at it then he could be anything.

Nash was good for the yellow team. Best I have seen him this pre-season. Provided intercept marking and great run off half back.

Hardwick was very good as always, providing drive off half back. He is composed and assured with the ball, never makes a mistake.

CJ was very good again. He just pressures the opposition in much the same way that Cyril does, almost got the better of Burgoyne at one point. He is often right on his man before they even know he is there. He took a nice grab and provided energy and run for the yellow team and he generally got to good positions.

Frawley was dominant in defence. I think we will see how much we missed this guy in 2017 once the season starts.

Henderson was very handy.

Morrison was excellent again. He is a real playmaker. Uses his footy smarts and vision to make great decisions and open up contest for his team.

Smith played half forward and was very good.

Gunston dominant up forward for the grey team.

TO'B was solid with a couple of wonderful marks but also dropped a couple he should have held.

Miles was good.

JO'R alternated between wing and mid field, popped up with one or two nice plays but was otherwise inconspicuous.

Lovell was Fairly inconspicuous apart from he kicked a sensational long distance snapped goal. Was hoping for more from him.

Brand was ok in the first half but hurt his finger (I think) and was replaced in the match by Monkhurst.

Ross was a liitle more lost in this game than he has been in others. Still did some nice things though.

Shiels was good playing in the middle.

Poppy was excellent today. He looks to have trimmed down a little.

Howe was towled up by Impey in the second half after probably just taking the chocolates in the first.

Schoe was very good at half forward using his elite kicking to hit up team mates that were 20 or 30 metres out from goal with precision.

That's it.

It really is pre season.

There is probably some truth to that. Obvious wingers are Smith, Henderson, O'Rourke and Morrison with O'Meara and even Sicily able to run down there.

Morrison was playing mid field largely and doing it very well for the grey team.
If I recall correctly, Morrison was a midfielder prior to his knee injury. Great to hear he is doing well in that role. If you don’t mind, did you notice him playing strictly outside the contest or did he mix it up inside the contest?

I will give you a mature answer.

Indigenous boy who is part of our next gen academy and eligible to be picked up by us in this year's draft.

A small forward who plays for Gippsland Power.

Does some amazing eye catching things but doesn't get a lot of the ball at this stage.
I know of Irvinh. Thought it may have been a nickname given to one of the new players.

I thought we weren’t going to pick him up. Or was that just a rumour

Axeman

How are a few of our box hill regulars performing namely Miles Willsmore Pitto Kurt?

Seems to be genuine excitement about the new breed and the above named don't seem to be as prominent?

Miles has stagnated in my view. I think the 2nd and 3rd year players have gone past him. He still has some class but I just don’t see how he fits.

Willsmore is miles off. He appears to have a niggle of some sort so hasn’t really been involved much recently.

Pitto looks good and will be competing with Ceglar for the second spot and is probably in front at this point given Ceglar slow comeback. His tap work is good and he is super aggressive and follows up well.

Kurt has been doing what Kurt does best and I mean that in a good way. He gives 110% at every contest and is a very effective spoiler. I like what he brings and he has looked very sharp this preseason.

Probably more outside but he was in amongst the contested stuff.

Your ability to notice so many players is incredible.

I find it very interesting that Burton has been playing deep defence in many match sims.

Seems almost wasted back there given his line breaking ability but who knows what clarko has planned for him.

Burton will be the general in defence. Guys like Stratts will not be automatic selection. We have a new breed with Sicily, Hardwick and Brand. Get used to it!

Was kind of expecting Burto to play forward this year, with the return of Birch (delayed), Stratts and Chip and the recruitment of Mirra...

Interesting...
Might be good enough to chick forward on a whim anyway. Axeman seemed to suggest that he has been a utility over the whole preseason i.e. potential long term Burgers replacement.

Burgers could play anywhere though. Don't see young Ryan doing too much in the midfield at this stage, more likely 3rd tall down back with pinch hits up forward...

How's Glass going folks? Haven't heard much about him...

Heard he was still half full, so can expect him to start in round 1.

Re Axeman being positive with his reports - This is what I like about his reports. He tries to see the best in players and I don't think he forgets to discuss faults in players.

Also - a positive vibe is what I want in the pre-season anyway.

Thanks mate, that’s the vibe I like to bring :thumbsu:
