North Melbourne midfielder Tarryn Thomas is expected to make a return to training next week after taking some time away from the club.
Thomas, 22, missed training on Friday after he was charged this week with a single count of threatening to distribute an intimate image.

He will face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on March 28 following a police investigation into a dispute and alleged malicious behaviour with an ex-girlfriend.

The Kangaroos will await the outcome of the court appearance before considering further steps but have allowed Thomas to take some leave.

Thomas is one of the Kangaroos’ best young players but endured a tough season in 2022 leading to speculation he could be traded.

But the onballer is keen to recapture his best under new coach Alastair Clarkson this year as part of a bolstered engine room featuring ex-Hawks Liam Shiels and Daniel Howe, recovered hard nut Will Phillips, star Ben Cunnington and Hugh Greenwood.

Jaidyn Stephenson (ill) was also missing from Friday’s session which stamped top rookie draft pick Blake Drury as a Round 1 bolter.

But star onballer Luke Davies-Uniacke trained away from the main group as he deals with an abdomen issue while former Docker Griffin Logue also remains sidelined with a groin injury.

Drury, who was surprisingly overlooked in the national draft, has been moved into a half back running role and was a standout in match simulation at Arden St on Friday.

Drury is highly-rated for his prolific ball-winning, disposal by foot and football smarts, and could force his way into the senior team for the Round 1 clash against West Coast at Marvel Stadium.

Paul Curtis was another to shine on a wing, while Will Phillips is another who will eye a starting Round 1 spot after returning to the engine room on Friday.

Phillips, a No. 3 draft pick, was out with glandular fever last year but was impressive with his clean ball handling on Friday.

Shiels also started in the centre square while forward Cameron Zurhaar came off the ground late in the session after copping a knock.
Is Jay in the know about TT's attitude? Of all the words I'd use to describe his apparent mindset, even under Clarko, 'keen' would not be one

Luke McDonald & Jy Simpkin lead Roos into new era

Luke McDonald and Jy Simpkin will lead North Melbourne into a new era after the duo were named co-captains of the club on Friday.

The pair were voted in by their fellow teammates and coaches, with the news officially announced to the group on Friday morning.

Co-vice-captains in 2022, McDonald and Simpkin will be supported by former captain Jack Ziebell who will remain a member of the player leadership group in 2023.

Earlier this week, Ziebell announced his decision to step down from the captaincy after six seasons and 111 games as skipper.

A father-son selection in the 2013 AFL Draft, McDonald is a lifelong North Melbourne person, after following in his father Donald’s footsteps. McDonald made his debut for the club in Round 1, 2014 and has played 159 games in the royal blue and white over nine seasons.

Simpkin arrived at Arden Street prior to the 2017 season after being selected at pick 12 in the 2016 AFL Draft. Across five seasons and 116 games, the 24-year-old has become a key cog in the Roos’ midfield.

A proud Yorta Yorta man, Simpkin claimed the Syd Barker Medal in 2022 for the second consecutive year.

Existing leadership group members Ben Cunnington and Nick Larkey will continue in their positions in 2023 while Ben McKay joins the leadership group for the first time.

The key defender is the newest inclusion to the contingent after being voted into the position by his teammates. After being selected with pick 21 of the 2015 AFL Draft, the 25-year-old has developed into one of the club’s most important players known for his intercept marking and overall defensive nous.

“The leadership vote was values-based, with a focus on who best represented our Shinboner Spirit,” North Melbourne’s general manager of football Todd Viney said.

“From the vote, we couldn’t split Luke and Jy in terms of the influence they’ve had on the playing group and the club as two of our key leaders.

“Therefore, it was decided that for the first time in the club’s history, the club would opt for a co-captaincy leadership model.

“Luke and Jy are outstanding individuals, well-equipped for this role both from a football and a cultural sense.

“Everyone at the club has great respect for Luke and Jy. They are both equally as passionate about getting the club back to where it needs to be, developing our young talent and fostering a positive club culture.”

LDU not in leadership group? Wow! Buckets instead of LDU? Is that a coercive psychological play to have him sign a deal?

Anyway, I dont mind the co captaincy.

Edit: you get the larrikin of McDonald and his positives vibes and you get the discipline and positive vibes from Jy. Jy was huge for morale in dark times. I think he deserves to be recognised as co captain and a leader of the club

Also, Tef would be losing his mind on twitter. He was adamant the club would make Jy sole captain based on his First Nations status and PC culture. **** that campaigner shit me bad. When it strictly come to football, he wasnt a complete arse hat, when it come to wedging politics into football, the biggest campaigner known to man

Oh no I have always made fun of oppo supporters for having co captains. No real leadership etc....going to cop it now.
It might these best way to do it right now. Luke being that bit older can captain until Jy takes over in his own right.

Get financial advice from a bean counter before you use your home to derive income as it may impact it's tax free status if/when you dispose of it. If you planned to sell it at some point get some advice on how it will impact you. ATO has gone after people who have had rental income and are living at a different address for lodging incorrect tax returns... it is something on their radar now.
You have six years to earn assessable income from your home and still consider it your main residence, if you do not have another main residence (as TAO indicated employer provides accommodation this should not be an issue). Even if you do exceed the six years, the MRE is apportioned.
However, if you are considering becoming a non-resident that is another issue. In short, do not sell while you are a non-resident.

LDU doesn't need to be in the leadership group this year, let him focus on football, he's an obvious replacement for Jack next year.

Yehhh nahhh, until Phillips takes over.. Phillips could be the best mid in the comp at least top 5. Jy isnt in the best 20 mids in the comp currently. What he brings is not ability but morale. Im happy to be proven wrong. At this current stage of our team, I am not unhappy with Jy being the sole captain. He will not be captain in 3-4 years. He is the rock we need right now tho

Disclaimer: It has been a long time since I was a tax agent so don't consider anything I post as reliable advice. :stern look

Renting out the house is the main issue for losing part or all CGT tax exemption for primary residency, you can also lose part of it when you are claiming deductions for home office expenses. This has been a bit of a murky thing since covid as a alot of people are working from home now and not sure they fully understand the implications.

If you do a live webcam, like on Twitch or Youtube or Tik Tok and the area isn't specifically set aside for business use, ie just using your home computer, and you aren't declaring home office expenses you should be fine... but I'd get advice from a tax agent as there might be a ruling published that I am not aware about and I am a bit lax on keeping up with ATO rulings.
Home office deductions aren't really that murky, it's just tax agents who think they are too clever by half that try to make it so. It is only in exceptionally rare cases that an employee would be entitled to interest expense deductions when WFH, which is the test under which you lose a portion of the MRE.

For the last time, football ability ≠ leadership.
If this a comment to LDU… he has shown more resilience than most at the club from off the field grief and loss and held his head high and performed out of his skin. Leadership remands resilience as a key component. Whether its on the track or off it. Leadership is leadership.

He also penned a deal and mckay hasnt. Goes to show who is all in and who isnt. I wouldn’t be giving campaigners leadership roles if they aren’t committed.. my two cents

I thought he was rather popular, I mean, * me dead. He’s at least our best mid currently by a ******* country mile? Hmmm maybe the boys feel inferior to his hollywood good looks?
I'm sure he's very popular but that doesn't necessarily translate to being seen as a leader. From what I've been told he's only recently (towards the end of last year) started to speak up and voice his opinions in meetings etc. He lead on the field by example last year and will continue to do so this year as he takes his game to another leave but I think he's got a fair way to go with off field leadership before he starts being considered for the leadership group. He'll get there in time there's no need to promote him before he's ready.

Ben McKay over LDU is a disgrace. LDU signed a deal, McKay hasnt. Good huh?
