FWIW that tweet was in an ABC story on Messi leaving Barca that was published on the website yesterday. I didn't bother posting the tweet here because everyone knew it was happening

Shame you guys didn't put a bid in for him to partner up with his buddy Suarez for one last hurrah.

Don't believe he actually had any concrete offers from England, he had one legitimate offer and he took it.
I'm sure if he put it out there that he wanted to play in England and was willing to take a pay cut to do it he would have every premier league club chasing his signature. He's worth 500mil. One last big contract before he retires doesn't and shouldn't really apply to him. He will keep earning more than every professional footballer for many years after retirement. He's moving from one circus to another.

The flip side of this is the commercial effect it has on Barca and Liga.

According to Brand Finance they estimate a loss of €77m commercial/sponsor income, €17m matchday income and €43m merchandise.

For La Liga, you would imagine the TV rights will fall a huge amount. You even wonder of this new investment deal might be affected.

But one player doesn't have a commercial impact positive or negative on anything....

Having been part of a few simpler NRL deal in the past I have told you exactly how these things work. But keep your head there pal.

Also does anyone think there's a monetary value to this 20.4m increase in social media presence?

Amazing. Immediate commercial boost, and while some will walk away when Messi walks away, many won't.

Apparently we tried, but I'm not entirely sure how it would have worked financially with La Liga's rules

Now that Messi has closed his signing with PSG, I will tell you. One of the clubs that was interested in Messi was ATLETICO DE MADRID, Cholo personally was in charge of calling Messi. Leo and the family seriously considered the option. But it could not be…

Cool story but La Liga have already locked in the TV rights for the next 8 seasons (maybe they expected Messi to play until 2029):

One player makes SFA difference to any TV rights package, incrediy naive to think otherwise.

Matchday income was 0 last season. Interesting it will supposedly drop by 17% according to some.

Nike are locked in until 2026 at 120m per year.

Messi or no Messi.

Especially with Real Madrid and Atletico not having big marquee names at the moment.

He didn't put himself out there that he wanted to play in France, end of the day the English clubs didn't make an offer, you can't really have a go at him for where he ended up.

You do know that's the US rights, not the domestic rights don't you?

I'm sure you're aware of the ins and outs of the contract, but as has been pointed out the money you get from a kit deal often depends on how many kits you sell. Rakuten (main shirt sponsor) expires at the end of this season IIRC.

Messi or no Messi

I think you must be the only person in the world that refuses to believe that Messi doesn't have a significant commercial impact on the clubs he plays for/doesn't play for.

Yes, that's just one example but also one of the biggest TV rights markets. There are currently no rights up for negotiation this season so no extra income from Messi for TV rights like you incorrectly claim.

Of course one player can make a difference.

Maybe in the case long term signing but even then only to a limited amount and not to the club. Messi is only around for 2 years, TV rights deals are negotiated at a minimum of 3 seasons, often longer. There are 10 matches per weekend, Messi is only playing in one of them. In any case, the rights for this season are not up for discussion and any extra TV revenue goes to Ligue 1 and then back to the clubs. Not into PSG's pocket like you incorrectly claim.

And I have shown that Barca already have a deal agreed for 120m a season with Nike until 2026. Unlike yourself I prefer to go off known facts rather than speculation.

Yes the Rakuten deal is expiring in 2022. Considering the last shirt sponsor deal lasted 6 seasons any new deal for shirt sponsorship from 2022 will not significantly be affected by Messi's departure unless you believe that he would have played at Barca until 2028.

I think you must be the only person in the world that refuses to believe that Messi doesn't have a significant commercial impact on the clubs he plays for/doesn't play for.

Again you are talking crap. At no stage have I ever claimed that there will be no economic benefit at all from signing Messi. I have only ever claimed that the economic benefits will go nowhere near paying the nearly 170m in potential wages over 2 seasons. If the economic benefits went anywhere near paying the demands of Messi like you naively believe then every major club in Europe would be queuing up to make the same offer that PSG did. Not just the one club funded by Qatari oil money.

It's really quite bizarre that you are desperately trying to paint the Messi contract as a deal that pays for itself commercially.[/QUOTE]

The biggest TV package expires at the end of this season. So I expect Messi's departure will have an impact on the new TV deal.

I never claimed TV money would go directly to PSG. But they will benefit as will the other French clubs and the league as a whole. Conversely, La Liga and their clubs will lose out as a result of this deal.

You don't think Messi's departure will have an significant impact on a Barcelona shirt sponsorship? PMSL.

This whole discussion is quite bizarre TBH.
