Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Thought he was gonna bust the game open after he kicked that goal and showed more emotion than I'd ever seen before...but I guess that was enough for him.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I think Vinum Coupe was suggesting that, but most of us are just frustrated.

His third goal was all class. His whole third quarter was exhilarating.

But he didn't have a kick in the first half.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

he did bust the game open and Carlton had to play catch up footy which eventually proved too much but good signs, all our forwards haven't fired a shot yet which is proof of the upside in our game. Wouldn't be surprised to see us along with a couple of other teams right now drop off our game. It's almost exactly where the fitness staff have conditioned the entire roster (except for the injured players) to start fresh then fatigue halfway through allowing another late surge to peak form at the end of round 24. I'd personally flurt with our form now and rest Ottens next week along with a few others who have been showing signs of fatigue in the past couple of weeks.
Play Vardy in ruck the full game next week or play Simpson (injured still?) Menzel in for Chappy, he seemed to pull up short on that final snap goal...hopefully it's nothing to be concerned with

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I missed his first goal.
Great finishing work in the 3rd quarter.

Thankfully he seemed to kick the ball more in the second half. He is so damaging by foot after a quick run. It cuts them open. The run and handball not so much.

Christensen was better than Varcs tonight.

Zero tackles by the way.

Twice in the last 2 minutes he.......... oh I need to let it go.

Cometti said it perfectly tonight.

"You get the impression Varcoe has been underrated for so long, and all of a sudden he seems overrated"

He's not committing to tackles. I wonder if it's the shoulder?

Last year he was wrapping blokes up, so there's something going on in his head regarding contact.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

No. Wait until we lose a game. Then we can really crucify him in true Geelong "supporter" tradition.

You know you just want to.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I was underwhelmed again at half time but a great third quarter.

Yes he helped us win the game but needs to be more consistent.

Some of his attacking work was great, notably that goal where he drew the player and did the one two with Christensen and then follows up.

Still not sticking tackles though which is a concern for me re our forward press and pressure etc.

But yes, definitely won't be dropped anytime soon if ever.

Christensen was excellent imo, even though he did turn it over a couple of times he just looks a natural player. So wrapped these players are getting games:D Taylor Hunt, Menzel, Vardy, Christensen, Duncan and Guthrie should test themselves against the potential future of AFL, the Suns in next week's game. Would be great to see them get a full game

But he crunched goldsack last week and he did say during the week he never thinks about the shoulder. He says it's fine.

It is still possible he has not adapted to the game plan fully.

Last year there was no doubt (in my mind) that he was instructed to fill space rather than attack the ball carrier.

Ahh the old chicken V egg case of early 2007, where people claim that supporting your team unconditionally is more constructive than pointing out its flaws in the hope that they are remedied.

Joy.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

:rolleyes::D
hmmmm...................................

Don't see your point. Just because a player does well in one game does not mean he shouldn't have been dropped for his efforts in the one before.

Cats fans questioning whether to drop him last week weren't doing it on the basis that anyone thinks he is a hack it was because his effort at the contest was seem by some to be not good enough. A few in this thread have noted similar.

But hey, kicked 3, happy with that output. :D

No Skanky. Or else I would not have discussed Selwood's kicking.

I was trying to extract some urine ( to put it politely) due to the calls after a win for someone to be dropped. Or don't you remember this discussion after beating Collingwood.

I like removing waste as much as the next felle.

I think I was too drunk after beating Collingwood (against my expectation) that I can't remember a thing :D

What was the question?

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

I never understand why so many supporters are defensive about players being dropped. It isnt a bad thing; everyone goes through form slumps, and it allows a youngster to get a couple of games. Us wanting Varcoe to have a bit of a spell arent suggesting he is a shit player, or that he should be traded or anything. Only that he needs to find some form, and the 2's is the best way to do that.

He was good tonight, but having an odd good game here and there isnt going to help us win another Flag. We need Varcoe performing those sorts of games consistently, and so far he just isnt showing it. He needs to play like that again next week, not wait three or four weeks before having another good game.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Where's the "Hi, I'm 'soft as butter' Andrew Mackey and wish to be dropped" thread:thumbsdown:

If Mackey is butter I guess Mackie must be Margarine.

Frankly the vast majority of butter I've encountered has been bloody hard.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Soft as butter, but knows where the goals are, could be a big liability in big games and finals matches when the games get extra tough.
Hardly touched it first half, then bobbed up in the third, then nothing in the last.

Those goals may save him, but weaknesses are glaring.

have to agree. He had a purple patch in the third quarter which I loved to see. Shame he was nowhere to be seen for the rest of the match.

Pretty accurate summation. That 10 minutes in the third quarter was pure class. But drifts out of games way too often.

Zero tackles again is a big concern, when it has been a strength of his game.

Re: Calls for Varcoe to be dropped

Kep christensen in, bring in menzel and Varco back to the twos to get some heart. No use kicking three flashy goals and doing nought for the rest fot he agem. senior players promoted to the mid field must play 4 qtrs of footy.
Ah perhaps thats the problem, he has been promoted and talked about, but isn't doing the work. His decision making remains poor, again look at Christensen, not flashy but knows what to do and will get much much better.

Perfectly said and completely accurate. You can't improve unless you're willing to be honest and analyse your failings.

Remind me, in 2007 did we improve because we did everything the same, or because they dared to be honest with themselves?
