I'm puzzled by the constant mentions of dropping Aussie

Same for me. On a day when the ball was hardly in the forward line, and when it was, it was out again pretty quicksmartish, he worked for it. I'd give him at least till the break to let himself get back into it ... Bate took a few weeks.

Yes, but why do people say some players need to go back to Casey to find some form, while others should be in the senior team to find their form? It seems to me that we should be naming our best side and anyone on the outer needs to earn their way back in via Casey. The time of getting games into youngsters at the expense of better players can't go on forever. Making players earn their spot and be accountable is what develops a winning culture IMO. For me, it's back to the seconds Wona, until you are ready to beat out others for your spot.

when watts plays forward he needs to start in the square simple as that. its like playing tennis you either play baseline or net, not in ****in no mands land in the middle. not his fault tho needs some teaching from the so called forward coaches

agreed should definately not drop watts, our forward structure was absolutely terrible... plus he just came from darwin and played against the strongest defence (in terms of size and build) in the competition, he played on Lonegan and Taylor (who many are talking about as AA potenitally)

cheney is defence, our defence aint perfect, dunn is forward and so is marric, i say put them in give them a test. Martin could be in trouble though... We need forwards who play forward or backmen who play back, not a player than go back or forward or midfield.

That has been our problem in the past, too many players that can do too many things, but those things they cant do well.

We need more specialist players imo

the untouchables imo are

brad miller - the man needs confidence and dropping him wont be worth it, he is just starting to play alright see joel mac
Jamar - Do i really need to explain this one?
Gysberts - I have a man crush, finally a decent player since SCHWAAAARRRRTTTTAAA to wear the great number 5, (my favourite number :) )
FRAWLEY, WARNOCK, GRIMES - No just no...
Watts - look at tommohawk at the start of the year, the man just needs games
Brad Green, JuniorMAC, - these players i think shouldnt be dropped.
Jetta, Bennell, Aussie - the kids need games, and i want to see jurrah aussie bennell jetta and davey in the one side. So those guys need form in them. Jetta will be impressive.
Anymore people?, this is saved to be dropped for next week, thoughts?

What about Rohan Bail, loved the way he moved, his marking ability and kicking earlier in the year, is he over his injury yet?

Or is it a case of him playing at Casey until injury permits selection, or waiting until next year when spots may open up through retirement and delisting.

I think that both Bail and McKenzie have been the real finds for Melbourne this year. Bail being pick 64 from 08 and McKenzie from the rookie draft.

Bail is playing only his 1st or 2nd game back from injury so he won't get automatic selection. It's just a case of waiting and hoping a spot opens up for him and at the moment there are better players like Scully and Trengove who need to find a spot in the midfield.

It is getting tougher to pick the team every week, with the emergence of so many talented youngsters and many players coming back/soon to come back from injury. Players who didn't play yesterday that will be in our best 22 in 2 years time (imo):
-Scully
-Trengove
-Blease
-Bate
-Jurrah
-Petterd
-Tapscott
-Mckenzie
-Bail
-Gawn
-Strauss??
-Hughes??
-Cheney??
-Dunn??
-McNamara??

plus any recruits.

Players playing yesterday likely not in the best 22 in 2 years time:
-Miller
-Junior
-Bruce
-Rivers
-Bartram
???

Did I miss any? Who do you guys agree/disagree on?

Edit: BTW, I realise this math does not add up, I'm trying to illustrate the point that it is difficult (and getting more difficult) to pick the team. Casey is gonna be a force over the next 5 years I reckon...

Yeah it is getting freaking hard. For mine players like Cheney, Maric and Dunn are goiong to be playing Casey because there's too much class ahead of them. Our midfield is already over flowing with players younger than 26, some of whom will have to go back, and some forward. Remember, we can only have five midfielders!

Cheney is far too unaccountable for AFL level, plays extremely wide of his man allowing him plenty of time to make decisions with the ball.

Dunn wastes so many chances in front of goal, our forward line has it hard enough as it is the last thing we need is Dunn in there piling on the behinds.

Maric is the only one out of that list that has a chance at being successful IMO, throw him in and see how he goes.

I agree mostly. Names with question marks are players that I have either not seen enough of, or that I think have a lot of improvement in them. I actually believe that both Dunn and Cheney have a lot of improvent in them, Dunn in particular - just needs some (serious) help with his kicking for goal.

Am I the only one who thinks that people are getting very excited over Bail after him not actually doing all that much?
He came in and played a role in a winning side, which enhances your reputation much more than coming in and not getting near it in a losing side. Either way he did look reasonably solid at AFL level so for that reason I'd be happy to have him back.

Also I'm really not sure about these comments about how hard it is to get Scully and Trengove back into the side. I found it very very simple, as listed by the side below. Wona for Bate is a simple change. Then we get rid of the extra backmen we had on the weekend (I chose Rivers and Macdonald because I don't rate them) and put Morton on a hbf.

FB: Garland Warnock Bartram
HB: Grimes Frawley Bruce
C: Scully Moloney Davey
HF: Sylvia Bate Watts
FF: Bennell Green Jetta
Foll: Jamar McDonald Trengove
Int: Miller, Gysberts, Jones, Morton
Emer: Macdonald, best 2 from Casey

In: Bate, Scully, Trengove
Out: Wona, Rivers, Macdonald

Good postyou are absolutely 100% right master........drop wonna, rivers, bartram in comes trena, sculls, bate oh garland out 4 mckenzie...

Who is going to play on Garlett or Betts? If there was one week Bartram was definitely safe its this week (probably jinxed him now). But he did a good job on Byrnes, as he has done on small forwards all year.

I'm puzzled by the constant mentions of dropping Aussie, sure he didn't get a lot of the ball but as a small crumbing forward there are going to be weeks like that.

Despite not having the best fitness base he still managed to chase hard and rack up 6 tackles, his pressure was extremely good.

No doubt would be unlucky, from watching saturdays game we seemed a bit small up forward, really lacked a target up forward until we left green up forward. Bate has to come back in for someone, for mine has to be one of Aussie, Jetta, Bennell for team balance and over the past two weeks Aussie has performed the last of all three.

But yes Scully and Trengove definitely in.

And a fella by the name of Liam Jurrah, I've heard he's fairly handy...

Yeah, but people haven't completely forgotten Jurrah. Petterd seems to have disappeared from the planet!

In response to rhaz, I really hope we re-sign him. Will be a gem in the future.

Will they go straight back into the team?

If so who will they replace?

Personally (before people put words in my mouth) i hope they come straight back in, but i cant see who we should drop.. tough to drop players on their form against the cats coming off a hard week in darwin..

thoughts people?

Thought you'd want watts out..

Thought these two would have definately held their spots today.

This. Jones definitely holds his spot. I thought he was pretty good. His skills were the best they've been all year. Bennel was ok too I thought. Looked half dangerous up forward. I do think those three (scullgove and bate) come back in though. Bate gives us structure up forward.

At the same time it would be pointless to drop watts IMO. we are meant to be getting games into him. Might as well drop miller if he's not gonna be around in the future. I know he's played well but..

Yeah, I thought his disposal was much improved: let's hope it's something he has been working on and will continue to improve; rather than him just having a good game.

Don't think anyone has called for Watts to be dropped though, did I miss something?
