I really hoped he’d step up a bit this year and like many of his team mates, I’ve been disappointed. Unlike some other players, he has given me moments that make me think he has something to offer. Agree with many posters commenting that he may lack a ‘bit’ of a footy brain...time will tell if he makes it, and he deserves some time. The kid is younger than McCreery and only in his second year.

Yeah I think he needs a lot of time in the VFL to develop. No point getting games into a player who when he plays, is a non factor

193cm with pace. I went back to his pre-draft bio:

Tall defender who is a real competitive beast, loving one-on-one contests using his strength and body positioning to great effect. Consistently performed for Western Australia in their 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championship winning team, taking on the most dangerous tall forwards in the opposition. He has strong hands overhead and averaged 14.8 disposals 5.2 marks and 3.5 tackles across the four matches. Prior to the 2019 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he played all his football as a midfielder or forward. The move to defence has added another string to his bow.

Can’t say I have seen any of this. Maybe he has forgotten what got him here? Do we still have a development coach because this kid needs to have his issues spelled out to him and worked on in the VFL.
So he’s best strength is shutting down key forwards yet we’re playing him as an a accountable half forward?

I think he should be tried in defence and Murphy remain on the wing or tried forward, (he's very courageous).
I don’t see what Murphy offers on the wing tbh, looks to big and slow to play there.

I do agree. For all the times our list managers have openly fetishized versatility and being able to play multiple positions, all our youth seem to be dumped on the forward flank or wing regardless of where they actually play

Played all his junior footy up till the carnival forward of the footy apparently so it's like he hasn't played forward before.

Gees, people are going early on him. Got some things to work on so should be back to the VFL this week, but it's a long year.

I think people are more perplexed at the decision to play him tbh.

We had a handful of changes with a list short on experienced depth. It was either him or some other kid with zero experience. There are people (not you) complaining we aren't giving the kids development opportunities in the seniors, then complaining when we do. I can't quite get my head around exactly what they want other than to think they just need to complain.

So I’m the coach of the Pies next week, I instantly do the following

Maynard JDG & Adams ( when not injured) starting centre bounce with Grundy- if Grundy out of position, smash the ball forward or take it out of the ruck, ruck don’t get pinged any more so do it!

Howe kicks out from points ( takes advantage of man on the mark and runs / bounce as close to 50 so we can gain yards.

At all times if not in a position to mark or pick up the ball, punch / tap forward or kick off the ground ( ensure players ahead always set up & ready for it )

If tall forwards out of place kick it long and hard along or low to the ground to put pressure on defensive talls.

No short Hollywood passes from centre back unless absolutely clear!

Players back themselves from inside 30-40 and have a shot for goal if clear.

Defensive Sweeper at all times

Small forwards set up in front or rear to anticipate tap downs

Set up for long kick then short or short then long ( game plan ) could be 2 x long + 1 short ( different combo’s)

Team to be

Howe - Roughead - Crisp

IQ - Moore - Ruscoe ( stay with me) or Murphy or Kelly

Sidebottom - Maynard - Daicos

Elliott- Mihocek - Pendles

McCreery - Cameron- WHE

Grundy - Adams JDG

Noble - Cox - Thomas - Ruscoe or Kelly or Murphy

Or breakout youngster??

Anyway that’s my take

Like your strategies, but don't agree with the team you've selected. Keep Trey out until he gets a presence in the VFL and too top heavy with Grundy, Cameron and Cox in the side.
