Tribute to Robbie Campbell - Got a Favourite moment?

Playing 116 games for the Hawks, there has been plenty to enjoy with Big Robbie and outside of the obvious one in Round 22, 2008 - where he was quite happy to have his photo taken in the centre square when Buddy had kicked his 100th goal, I can remember a few exciting things that Robbie did, that were truly inspiring.

One in the last quarter of the game against North in round 3, 2008.....obviously after losing to them in the semi's the previous year (in a particularly unpleasant manner), the Hawks were keen to atone and early on in the game it looked ok, until we got sucked in and started focussing on the man instead of the ball....free's were being given away all over the place and North looked like they had enough at 3 quarter time to get them home....

In a titanic struggle during the last quarter, North with plenty of momentum, got the ball into their forward line and it spilled to Shannon Grant, about 30 metres out, near on directly in front....he hesitated momentarily and Big Robbie pounced and nailed him for "dropping the ball"....magnificent tackle and shifted the momentum straight back to the Hawks.....who then through Buddy firing up, did enough to win....

The roar from the Hawks crowd, when Robbie laid that tackle was huge and I have no doubt it was the pivotal moment in the game....I just remember how bad the Hawks supporters wanted to win that game after that previous finals match the year before.....

Great stuff Robbie!! You will be sorely missed from the team.

The look on his face when I think Shane Wakelin took a mark on him in 2007 the game at the dome, where we won.

He looked angry:D

In that same game market (i think) north had a break on the wing and a man free on the 50 meter mark, and out of nowhere big Robbie came in and spoiled the ball over the boundry line. Such a team man, his mobility will be sorely missed.

Lets not forget the unsociable bump on Reidwolt in last year prelim. Loved it!

I'm really going to miss the big fella. He kept us competitive in the ruck through the tough times and was a pretty good kick for goal from memory. Great he has a premiership medallion for his efforts.

I had a chuckle in last years Prelim when he hip and shouldered Riewoldt off the ball. I think Nick thought he had been hit by a bus:D

I have two favorite moments with Robbie, both show how great a guy he is.

When Buddy kicked his 100th goal and everyone was running onto the field, I didnt see it then, but saw it on the replay, when a guy wanted to get a photo with Robbie and the cop tried to get the guy away from Robbie. But Robbie insisted he have the photo with the guy. Just showed how genuine a guy he was, always had time for people.

In the same vein the day after the grand final in 08, walking towards Glenferrie for the celebration, saw Robbie walking down the street, my brother and I asked for his autograph on our tops and a photo, and even though he was running late he did it.

Will miss big Robbie Campbell.

I met the big man again this year at the bush fire appeal game between the Dons and Dogs. He had just started rattling tins I heard him say 'how do we get going?' so I went over and gave him a $50. He was wrapped, and I was quickly wrapped up in a bear hug as thanks.

Great guy, he then signed my away top and started me off collecting signatures through the year, a top bloke. I remember Jason Dunstall saying a few years back that Robbie had written to every club asking to get a chance, only the hawks replied, lucky us.

He like Taylor had his detractors over the years but his work and determination shone through.

Thanks for the memories mate, you wanted it more than most, sorry it ended too soon. Thanks for the passion you put in, last year of course, but also this year in defense, ever the team man.

Early on this year I went down to watch the boys train. After the session Bob was just mucking about kicking for goal by himself, and myself and a mate went over and had a chat to him. He took the time out to have a quick word with us before getting back to business with the footy. Great bloke. :thumbsu:

Cant forget after Buddy kicked his 100th when he was posing for photos with fans!

This year, after the Round 11 match against Sydney the players were coming into the rooms and all the fans were wanting Hi - 5's from the players. I was up a bit high so I didn't think I would get one but Robbie took the time to jump up and gave me a Hi - 5 :)

Just seems like the type of guy who has time for everyone.

Great player, great guy!

Gonna miss you Robbie!

:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu: My fav as well. Thanks Robbie

i think it was against adelaide in the 07 elim where the ball was coming up the wing by adelaide on a fast break.... cant remember who the players were but the ball hung a bit longer in the air & big bob ran flat knacker to not only get to the contest but took a momentum changing mark...

meet bob a few times & he really was a nice guy.

A Melbourne supporting mate of mine and I went up to Shepparton for a Hawks Dees practice match a few years ago now (2004-5 from memory).

My mate asked me at one point during the game "Who's the bloke wearing 39 for Hawthorn ? He's got to be the worst player I've ever seen.".

Anyway, I was lucky enough to get a photo of him accepting his premiership medallion in '08, had it blown up and got it signed by Robbie earlier this year. He signed it "To Dave (my Melbourne supporting mate), Not bad for a hack, eh ?". I gave it to Dave for his birthday this year.

Top bloke and under-rated footballer.

Oh yeah, and how could I forget (not sure if this has been mentioned already) his job on Barry Hall at full back a couple of years at the G which allowed us to beat the Swans for the first time in about 5 or 6 years.

My favorite part of the medal presentation at last years GF was when Robbie Campbell got a hug from that little girl, it was so sweet!

Gonna miss the big Bob!

i remember in my last year of primary school in 2004 wen robbie was in the early years of his career our school took our year level went 2 a footy clinic hosted by the hwks. he was one of the players there and was fairly unknown at the time and i remember looking at him and just seeing how huge he looked (i was 12) but yeh great bloke and he had a chat 2 me wen i told him i was a hawks supporter and just remember him been a really nice guy. very good and versatile player and he will b missed

.

A sad day for thousands of fans. Always remember, Robbie, you will remain a favorite son of our proud club as an emerging quality ruckman and a premiership player, a status that many a champion of the game and thousands more at the elite level never achieved.

A favorite photo of Robbie I took at Brisbane’s German Club last year.

I had a chat with him. He will do well in after footy life. Certainly in a public relations role with his intellect.

And we will never forget you when Buddy kicked his famous centurion goal at Docklands in round 22 last year. [/QUOTE]

The 2007 Semi-Final the guy kept trying deep into the 4th quarter. Made a diving smother and was about the only player who didn't have their head down in the last.

Round 12 2007 when Robbie kicked the goal to put us 100 in the dying moments of the game. Sunk the no Buddy, no Hawthorn talk with that one.

As a Geelong fan I have a natural dislike for Hawthorn, but I loved the way Robert Campbell went about it.

One of the best stories I heard was when the Hawks were doing their pre-pre-game warm up when there are not a lot of people around.
Campbell was having a chat to a kid on the sidelines and managed to get the kid on the ground to have a kick to kick with him...would have been a huge moment for the kid.

That was until security told Campbell he couldn't have the kid on the field.

Just a great bloke and said to see him go because he was one of two blokes in 08 I genuinely liked, the other one was Crawford.
