Just noticed looking through the team lists for my footy tips that Pannell will be umpiring a Bulldogs game again this weekend, against the PAPs at AO. Glad to say my money is on the Bulldogs!

Will be interesting to see if anyone records how lopsided his free kick count is... and if he gets out of the venue alive

It's actually genius by the AFL.

If they put him in charge of a Bulldogs game in Melbourne people would notice and create a stink. And if it's an interstate game there would be calls of Victorian bias.

But by putting him in charge of a Port game the AFL has guaranteed that Crows fans won't care if he pulls another 17-1 performance and then we can just carry on as we were

Yeah, I doubt he'll be as biased now that everyone is going to be looking closely at him.

The side that has a player taken out through extreme violence may have to play one short for the rest of the game. At present, this is a huge advantage for the thug's team. There should either be a red card for said thug or some way of the disadvantaged team bringing a reserve player onto the bench. An act of thuggery could decide a granny and what an outcry there will be if that happens. Adjudication is difficult. Video umpire involvement for mine.

Having had a knee operation and being laid up, I've had my first chance to watch pretty much every game on free to air this weekend. In every game without exception the umpiring has been absolutely woeful. Completely inconsistent from one decision to the next, and just plain wrong on so any occasions its a freakin joke. The competition has improved in so many ways in recent years, it has truly become a professional sport. The exception is umpiring. It is embarrassingly amateurish. The AFL has to invest 10 fold on this issue going forward. It is IMO the worst aspect of AFL football. So bad it just cant continue to be ignored.

No surprises there - it is the one aspect of the game that is not handled by full-time employees.

Of course, as the umpires are all too happy to point out, doing things on a full-time basis makes you worse at it.

Very interesting. In an interview on 5AA with the umpires boss not long after the dogs game, the umpires boss said we allow our umpires to regroup and learn from their mistakes and we give them another go. It certainly looks like he has been told to move on. I hate this though. Teams who he was poor against like us and we lost and its found out he is a dogs supporter are told 'oops sorry, oh and umpires don't support any teams, nothing to see here'. The AFL need to cut the spin shit out. They are a very ordinary organisation at present.
