Re: United Football Leage info

It's good that the UFL is bringing in that rule, because it will apply a little more pressure on the NFL to adopt it as well, rather than it just being in College.

I'd like the NFL tho to do it this way...
Each team starts possession from their own 40, instead of opposition 20. This way it wont make TDs or even FGs automatic.
And that if after perhaps 3 or 4 possessions each, if teams are still tied, it ends as a tie....cos tied games shouldn't be eliminated from happening.

Interesting that the UFL website lists 7 'locations' for 4 teams.

The other three 'locations' that do not actually have a team are Los Angeles, Hartford and Sacramento. I presume San Francisco will play a game in Sacramento, Las Vegas will play a game in Sacramento and New York will play a game in Hartford?

Also 2010 potential markets are listed as Salt Lake City and Monterrey, Mexico.

As has been discussed on this board, there is also this comment:

There are nearly two dozen large cities in North America representing over 45 million people, who for the foreseeable future, will not get to call an NFL franchise their own. The UFL is planning on filling this void with four teams in 2009 and 6-8 teams in 2010.

The first ever UFL sellout
Posted by Mike Florio on September 21, 2010 7:47 PM ET
At a time when more than a few NFL teams are struggling to sell all of the tickets to their games, one of the five UFL teams has managed to fill up the home stadium in the franchise’s debut.

The UFL announced today that the Omaha Nighthawks have sold all seats to Friday night’s game against the Hartford Colonials.

Sure, Rosenblatt Stadium holds only 24,000 — but that will still beat the league’s regular-season attendance record by nearly 10,000.

The Omaha roster includes plenty of players with NFL experience, including Wendell Bryant, Maurice Clarett (OK, Clarett really doesn’t have much NFL experience), Ricardo Colclough, Damion Cook, Devard Darling, Dusty Dvoracek, Robert Ferguson, George Foster, Jeff Garcia, Charles Grant, Ahman Green, Morlon Greenwood, Cate June, Jeb Putzier, Aaron Rouse, Stuart Schweigert, D.J. Shockley, and Gary Stills.

The game will be televised on HDNet at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Colonials are 1-0; Omaha didn’t play in Week One.

Gonna have to find a stream and watch a game one of these days.

Jeff Garcia sparks come-from-behind win for Nighthawks
Posted by Mike Florio on September 25, 2010 12:10 AM ET
The Omaha Nighthawks, a brand-new UFL team stocked with former NFL players in uniforms that conjure memories of the Mean Machine from the Adam Sandler remake of The Longest Yard, made a big splash in their Friday night debut before more than 23,000 Nebraska fans.

The record crowd saw quarterback Jeff Garcia throw a 12-yard touchdown pass to receiver Robert Ferguson with only six seconds on the clock. With the extra point, the Nighthawks took their first lead of the game — and erased a 23-10 deficit they faced at the start of the fourth quarter for the 27-26 victory.

Per Eric Olson of the Associated Press, the game also featured the pro debut of Maurice Clarett, who has returned to football after a failed NFL stint and a successful incarceration. Clarett returned a kickoff and nearly blocked a punt.

Garcia, who completed 23 of 39 passes for 226 yards, threw three touchdown passes on the night, outdueling Josh McCown of the Colonials, who connected on 22 of 25 passes for 264 yards and two scores.

Former NFL tailback Ahman Green, 33, gained 49 yards on 12 carries for Omaha.

The game could have gone to overtime if Hartford kicker Taylor Melhaff hadn’t missed an extra point in the second quarter. Instead, the game generated the smallest margin of victory in UFL history — a record that will stand at least until the UFL incorporates the extremely rare 1/2-point play.

Nah, was a big Outlaws fan when the XFL got running. Girl was seeing at the time was into them too, so we went to a few games before the league went bust.

see early 2009 post on page 1...

I'll be rooting for the Las Vegas team for sure.

Yeah I'm going with the Hartford Colonials to keep it in New England.
