We had a pair of rotated-down VFL fieldies **** up at the other end in my partner's first A Section game, instead of sorting it out at quarter time and destroying the young kid's confidence, I ran out to get them to go back and destroyed my career instead.

From the vacant expressions and "Duhhh?" from both of them at the sudden and perhaps unorthodox appearance of a large goal umpire thundering through the midfield, I realised that the VFL favoured fitness over brains and that I'd better thunder straight back if I didn't want to impartially adjudicate the next score from fifty metres out.

Oh **** really? Nooooooooo

Found it. Had a laugh now, especially the cartoon after it which I didn't remember at all. Mind you, at the dinner I was mortified and just wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. And while I was sorry about Harry's father, it was just as well he wasn't there on appointments night.

Jase, it is purely on merit - consistent top-notch performance on-field throughout the year, with consistent effort and leadership at training.

This can sometimes lead to repetition where you have outstanding umpires in the squad, but most years it can go to any of half a dozen equally qualified performers, half of whom will have to be disappointed.

Another consideration is that VAFA being an important feeder to VFL, the upwardly-bound young guns are often farewelled by getting the big game, in much the same way that the VFL grand final showcases the umpires heading off to AFL glory. Whether they do so at the expense of more deserving senior umpires is the subject of much deep reflection and introspection over suitable beverages.

Rest assured that whoever strides out to the middle on the day, they've earned the right to be there.

OTP Just read the VAFA release on 2019 umpiring. Many new appointments. Down the bottom it claims the umpires to be the biggest club in the VAFA.
Seeing they are a club do you know if 1]The VAFUA pay an affiliation fee - would have to be huge seeing they have sections of umpires 2] Same Insurances that VAFA clubs pay 3] Pay for the new coaching staff P Marshall etc themselves or do those funds come from the VAFA bucket?

Would appear to me that the VAFUA should be in line with all other member clubs.

What do you think/know?

To answer your questions:
1: I know nothing
2: I know nothing
3: I know nothing

It's been some years since I trod the Glenhuntly Road turf in anger.

Ever heard of dissimulate, OTP?:)

The last time I had a gander at a VAFA Annual Report the largest line item - by a margin - covered your income and that of your oddball friends. Among other umpiring bits-n-pieces. Clearly the post by zeroseven is a pisstake.

Did former VAFA Grand Final umpire Mark Gibson control some games in the Northern Territory Football League?

Pretty sure the answer is 'yes', Jase.

Noticed the grand final appointments had been announced:

Premier:
F Matthew Oakley Oliver Murray Daniel Silfo
B Matthew Gough Ben Hodgart Ben Myatt Henry Bennett
G Joel Bright Tom Moloney

Premier B:
F Michael Gough Vaughan Sidebottom Anthony Edmonds
B Nick Obst Tom McInerney
G Anthony Damen Jasmina Lieu

Premier C:
F Jason Schilling Owen Hinson Logan Webster
B Shaun Bourke Vo Schofield
G Kevin Segota Zak Pollak

Interesting only 2 boundaries for B & C, would've thought they deserve 3.

Youf policy denies AD again. Ah well, great career from a brilliant bloke.

AD is a legend, but I had Joel and Tom locked in from rd1. Big changes from last season.

The boundaries is very interesting, they need to be appointing 3 field and at least 3 boundaries in every senior final. It’s just cheap and backwards thinking otherwise
