Umpiring moves

A well deserved congratulations to veteran field umpire Steve McCarthy who will have his 700th game this Saturday at Ormond.
The band is really back together at the Gunnery, Pazza. All six former fieldies. Not to mention the Prez floating around. Should be plenty of post match feedback for Macca there.;)

Are the younger fluro odd balls up themselves?

Its basically a load of rubbish from some old time posters on here. Get up the grades and you will never have to worry about the umpires. Whilst the young ones dont join in the aftermatch "pi$$ up" like the oldies, they are the ones who are continually reviewing their games on a weekly basis, keeping up-to-date with the updated coaches' interpretations, training at HQ Headquarters regularly and basically modernising the tired and dated umpiring system.
Just as times have changed for the players, times have changed for the umpiring group. Sadly, too many people reminisce in the "good ol" days

It’s ammos mate not afl. Socialise and enjoy the game. That includes after the game. And I don’t care about the good old days. I care about every Saturday

Not everyone lives within 10min of the ground and last time i checked drink driving is a big no no.. while i am often bagging the fluro odd balls, they are always in the after match for 5min or so. They all have other things in life.

No one is suggesting preparing well isn't a good thing. More so if you're a young umpire with an eye to higher honours. It's also in the interests of the VAFA to be considered a highly regarded talent source. I get that!

That said the last time I saw an assessment form, communication and cooperation was a marked KPI. Rapport being an ingredient I'd suggest and a good way of developing that aspect would be to socialise not only with your colleagues but those who are an integral part of making things tick over nicely - the players. You don't have to partake. Just mingle for 15 or so minutes post game. It's not either/or, you can do both.

That old saying "many are called but few a chosen" is real so you may well find yourself spending your officiating life in community football and that's not a bad thing. The man of the day is an example having run around at VFL level back in the day and for various reasons returned to the VAFA to become not only an extremely good umpire but a much respected one too. I'm sure he'd say that getting to know the players has helped him in both regards.

Who says you have to drink for a start. They are a group just like the players. Surely they have more than 5 minutes in their busy life to meet others. Players would cop it if they came up for 5 minutes.

Speaking from experience I was taught when I started to be a part of the after match and build the rapport with the players and officials. Now this is bloody hard to do at Under 19 games where there is no after match, but, at senior level, get in amongst it. It's good to have a laugh and talk about what has happened during the match - tip your hand in your pocket for the raffle and so on. The clubs collectively appreciate the umpires being there each week. The thing with it though is by doing it, you know that the next time you have either side you will be looked after and made to feel welcome.

I use Williamstown as an example. One of my former teachers at high school is involved with the club (who's son was one of the club's best players in the last 15 years!) and it's been good for both of us to remember the old times and etc. And Williamstown with their umpiring connections make every umpire welcome there.

Well well well... hows the amount of injuries and overseas trippers at Old Brighton!! Now on this note, I found myself at the home of the overlords today, i had to collect some water boy tops for my lot, anyway I got talking to a couple of the higher powers and im told that Old Brighton are not the only group battling with mass numbers heading overseas in the next couple of weeks, rumor is that the supreme leader of the fluro odd balls is coming out of retirement this week in the lower grades. Wonder if this means he will push a few of his fluro soliders out the way and get yet another top grade GF?

Anyway hope the little fluro guys n girls get through the next couple of weeks

As for my lot, hardly lost a game so far and i reckon its in the bag !!! Go us !!!

Other consideration for umpires in attending after match functions is distance. Some umpires have to travel an hour or more to games, it can be hard to then hang around after the game if they have anything on that night.

Its much easier to hang around for a drink or 2 when close to home.

Depends on the age of the umps too, I think. Back when I were a lad, a wee stripling twirling the calicos for fun and profit, in the lower grades you were allocated games reasonably close to home. Once you hit the exalted ranks of C, B or A, it was expected that you went to the game wherever it may be. Living in Hoppers Crossing, I became very used to dodging mamils on bicycles going down Beach Rd on my way to the Wick, the bowling club, Boss James, Sandy, Brindisi St and Beauy. Since it was going to be a long hike home anyway I always stayed behind for a powerade with the fieldies and my partner. No sign of the boundaries, they tend to eschew showers and scuttle off with indecent haste.

Why on earth anyone would want to rush from the beauty of the southern suburbs back to Hoppers Crossing is one of the mysteries of the world.:p

Don't think any club expects umps who have distances to travel home to socialise post game, but from my observation the appointment gurus seek to keep the travelling to a minimum.

A post match chat goes a long way to easing any possible future match day tension and a much more convivial atmosphere in which players can assist umps with their decision making.;)

Saw a shortarsed goalie strutting out like a bantam rooster for my son's game this afternoon. Nah, couldn't be.

Yep, Clayton Evans himself, enjoyed a very welcome chat and drink after the game. Good times.
Geez, you really lucked-in. Front row seats to watch the miniature marvels artistry.

Nice work.

Got seen by el supremo yesterday at Power House in the split round. Who knows what that means!

I thought I would travel from Craigieburn to Camberwell today to watch one of my favourite young players run around. I was expecting to see a great game between two good sides, what I witnessed instead was one of the worst displays of one sided umpiring I have seen in my 35 years of watching the game.
