Shame and A Dangerous Method will make Fassbender huge (if they haven't already, Prometheus wont hurt either)

He is the new Gary Oldman, without a doubt

Yep those are two I definately want to check out soon.

In the films Hunger and Fishtank he gives two of the great performances i've seen from movies of the last 5 years or so.

Robert Sean Leonard is pretty underrated. He's great in House and was brilliant in Dead Poets.

Many actors working in television who can act circles around some of the so called movie stars.

Interesting a Sandler fan would exclude Punch Drunk Love from that list

Strongly agree with the Fassbender nominations, my favourite actor going around today.
no, not interesting.

former friend had Haappy Gilmore as his favourite film, think he had every picked a film from the ouvre of PT Anerson? /Nosiree

Paul Giamatti

WOW!! Apparently only America makes films and only Americans star in them. I think most modern American Actors or Actresses are overrated, and it's not because they are good or bad at their chosen profession but the quality of the scripts and films being made in Hollywood is so poor. Occassionally there is a gem (although I can't think one at the moment), but most of time they are trying to turn sh!t into diamonds and the modern generation are falling for it.

Anyway, my pick for the most underrated is Claudia Cardinale, films such as 'Girl With A Suitcase', 'Cartouche', '8 1/2', 'The Leopard' and 'Once Upon A Time In The West' showed she is a lot more than pretty face and busty figure.

Monica Belucci...enough said

Patrick Bateman, truly talented actor, loves his art so much, he'll go mad at lighting guys who walk behind him.

Totally overshadowed in Bateman by ledger, Great in AM psycho, but it was too gorey to be in mainstream, will need another 5 years to be appreciated.

Giovanni Ribisi - Solid actor, minor scenes in Avatar, in good movies like Boiler Room, Lost in Translation

Rachel Weisz - Solid actress, should get into more mainstream roles for recognition

Overrated?

Anything Jonah Hill/Seth Rogen related.

If anything, his serious stuff in Scrubs is good. However, his joker side is horrendous. I've always had the belief if they tailored J.D to be a bit more dry with his humor or removed the character completely; Scrubs would have been an all time classic. Still a better show than what people give it credit for being.

Whenever Tom Cruise brings personality to a character, it clicks and often makes terrible or average movies entertaining at the very least.

Christian Bale is pretty great without being outstanding.

For mine: David Duchovny, Edward Norton, Colin Farrel ('In Bruges' is something you must see before you die) and Peter Capaldi's role as Malcolm Tucker in 'The Thick of It' and 'In the Loop' deserve much more recognition then they get.

I HATED that movie! and pretty sure it was because of Colin Farrel and his 'dear diary' speeches about how shit "bruges" was.... "in bruges.... in bruges.... in bruges...." The irish accent is even worse when it's complaining all the time.
The thing that somewhat saved it was the ending and how it tied into that painting, other than that i thought it was pretty crap.

In Bruges is an awesome movie, Gleeson, Fiennes, Farrell were all quality.

Overrated; at the moment I'm becoming increasingly disappointed with George Clooney, every role for the 6-7 years has been very similar. I keep going in with high expectations and leave feeling like I have seen him play those roles before its getting tedious.

The Descendants and Up in the Air.
The American, Michael Clayton and The Ides of March.
Burn after reading, and The men who stare at goats.

Not that he is ever really bad in these roles, just don't understand the hype behind what are basically cookie cutter performances.

Underrated: Idris Elba. This guy is a star, probably more underrated by Hollywood as he should be the driving force behind movies. His roles in Luther and The Wire were excellent, great side roles in The Losers and RocknRolla, American Gangster and Thor. Hopefully his Golden Globe opens up the possibility of deeper characters.

The recently departed Ben Gazzara - Watched The Killing of a Chinese Bookie again recently, his performance was outstanding. A fairly plotless movie that focused on the main character Cosmo (Gazzara), even at flat points in the movie, he was always mesmerising.

Peter Boyle. Before ending up in American Sitcomland, he was one o' the finest character actors of the 70's. For me he'll always be the duplicitous Dillon in the low-level crime masterpiece, The Friends Of Eddie Coyle

Yeah, hasn't done anything worthwhile since Oh brother, where art thou?. I did like Men who stare at Goats, but that was more in spite of Clooney than because of him.

Gazzara was also great in Bogdanovich's character study "Saint Jack" with support by Denholm Elliott and George Lazenby in a small role

Boyle became a star playing a bigoted blackmailer in "Joe", a movie which was hugely popular at the time (1970) but largely forgotten today
