Re: Gold Coast no nickname??

The mascot, the colours, and having no motive/nickname suck. Not to mention that their logo looks like Channel 10 Sports Tonight Logo!

strangely, Sports Tonight recently changed their logo to this:

ST.jpg

maybe GCFC purchased the logo design off Network TEN?

much better, even got a ready made jumper :D

I'm going to start drawing up a Richard Nixon-style list filled with people who post this bloody thing on here. Won't you please let us forget? It is okay for Hawks fans to post it, coz then I can reply with their diamond thing, even though they were smart enough to only wear it once. Took us years.

haha, i particularly want to meet the genius who though the ochre coloured numbers would be a good idea for all the fans sitting on the other side of the ground from the play!

Just shows that our druggie culture existed in the boardroom as well as the lockerroom. I can just imagine a smoke filled room with everyone gathered around the jumper going "whooooah duuude, thats cooool".

Only explanation I can think of.

Re: Gold Coast no nickname??

I can't remember: were we ever asked by GC17 if we would prefer a nickname to no nickname at all, or did they base their decision purely on the fact that there wasn't overwhelming support for one single name? About half of those surveyed wanted 'Marlins', which means the other 50% were divided amongst Stingrays, Guards (Lifeguards), Ironmenn and Rays. And that's just from the shortlist. The question you have to ask yourselves then is if the majority of GC supporters happy with this decision?

The answer is NO - we are not happy at all. The initial hot favourite was Sharks - GC17 then said it will never be Sharks. Then they asked us on their own website to vote on THEIR suggested final 5 names. Marlins was favourite. The GC Bulletin poll had Marlins at a 91.1% approval rating! Never on the GC17 website or anywhere else was a 'no nickname' proposal suggested. Talk about giving the fans the 'bird'.

Re: Gold Coast no nickname??

That was their whole point, the Titans are the Titans, the Blaze are the Blaze and Utd will be Utd. Gold Coast Football Club will be marketing themselves as the Gold Coast Football Club. They are still a couple of years away from the AFL anyway, the Dockers and Power never had a nickname a couple of years out. They have a chance to build up their identity behind the "Gold Coast" brand. Perhaps the other teams will end up focussing on their nicknames? Either way, lets see how it develops before passing judgment at this very early stage.

I dont think Gold Coast United will be simply called Utd, be too much confusion, its the same as why you dont see Sydney FC simply getting called FC.

I think they just wussed out on the decision (they would have gotten panned no matter what nick name they came up with, this way they dont cop as much) They basically chose the nick name anyway by the creation of the mascot, they just haven't offically stated that its their nick name.

GCFClogo.jpg

still the ST logo but these colours seem to work much better

I love it!! Why couldn't GC17 have used Orange?
The logo is great just a shame they used Brisbane and Adelaide colours!!
2011 is two years away! Who knows what changes they will make.
Just need to ditch Downie who is a complete loser!!

well i told the gc17 website about how it was a stupid decision to have colours that were already taken and they already had good colours on their website but you know them and taking suggestions

Re: Gold Coast Football Club

Is this a joke? Anyone see the mascot on TFS...its an ABSOLUTE joke...Freo have finally gotten off the bottom of the ladder (in jokes)

No nickname and what are the colours again? Red, Yellow, Blue, White or something crazy...holy shit...ban them already!

Lol. Early days yet. They still need to top our song!

So Essendon are the Mosquitos now, are they? And as for Sydney FC, you generally hear them called Sydney FC, plus the Sydney Swans have a nickname, meaning they can be called the Swans. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with Utd, either way GCFC are still two and half years away from kicking a ball in anger.

Re: Gold Coast no nickname??

i believe gold coast are waiting to see what nicknames evolve from the fans. not too bad of an idea, seeing as thats pretty much how all of the other teams got their nicknames.
the nicknames of newer clubs, like Freo Dockers and Port Power, aren't massively approved by the public because they didnt evolve.

As for the aussie type surfer mascot, thats pretty much what freo did 15 odd years ago- try to be a "glamour" club. Now they are reviewing colours, logo, mascot, song etc.
What a risk taken by GCFC.

Re: Gold Coast no nickname??

That's not a strong identity. It's a bland, generic identity generated by a committee that didn't have the guts to stick its neck out and make a choice. Soon enough people will just start calling them 'the Gold Coast' and then the confusion with the Titans and the A-League side will begin. A nickname, even if it doesn't create an aura of power or strength, at least creates an undeniable point of differentiation.
how bout a nickname of Neckless then? (suits Gazza too)

...

Iron Men then? the Gold Coast Irons?

Perhaps their hoping that Sharks emerges, because if they picked sharks themselves there would have been backlash from Southport opposition supporters.

It was a good idea not to have a nickname, but to have the big leadup and launch a mascot was a big mistake. They should have just said these are our colours and they represent this, this and this. And thats it.

So the clubs decided to just start off as the Gold Coast Football Club without any nickname because they wanted a nickname to come organically so what is this nickname gonna be and when is it gonna start?
the team has 2 years before they even join the AFL so will they have a nickname by then?

The original standout nickname for GC was the sharks so they could be called that or the Marlins or Stingrays.
Or they could have a stupider nickname that could make GCFC regret not having an official nickname.

Anyway what do you think's gonna happen with this?

Spot on LeeARM! It all seems very naive to think that something will just evolve. Problem that I see with us being in NRL country is that our detracters are just waiting to pounce and the 'no nickname' thing is making us a laughing stock. One Titan supporter suggested to me that we be called the "Gold Coast Claytons", the footy the Coast will watch when all other codes are playing away.

GC17 have been pushing the idea of the guards by putting it on their shortlist and claiming "they were all equally liked by the public" when marlins and stingrays were clear favourites and then making their mascot a lifeguard plus having red and yellow, the colours of the beach flags. maybe they should just name themselves the guards and let it grow on people.

Well, at least we haven't gone down the NRL path of just copying the NFL. We might have had the Gold Coast Texans.
