Where does he really fit into the Arsenal XI really? When all players are fit and available (which is usually only for 2 weeks a season).

He's not a winger.

He's not a striker.

But is our best finisher by a ridiculous margin. If we engineer say 3 shots for him a match, he will generally score 1-2 of them.

He plays okay as a winger. He has decent pace, his movement is good and is a nice cross of the ball. Defensively, he sucks but most wingers do.

Wenger just doesn't give him enough opportunity.

I thought he could've been given more of a run up front this season. Has only played there once from memory?

Once, and not very well. Playing him there more would necessitate changing formation, which Wenger doesn't want to do, because Podolski has no hold up play to speak of. Neither does Walcott, but at least when he ran Walcott through there he was fast enough to just think "**** the hold up", let the ball bounce and then run past the back 4.

Welcome back Abou Diaby! Playing his first game with the under 21s since his last game in March 2013. He'll be like a new signing next year!

Very true. I think overall Podolski has maybe had 3-4 games as the sole striker and I don't believe he's been a standout in any of those games. An early game at Anfield where we won 2-0 probably was the best. I recall Diaby dominating that game as well.

Gervinho was the striker that day, not Podolski.

Probably was. Poldi did start as the striker early on though I seem to remember.

I'm just looking at the age distribution of our squad considering the United situation. On numbers, do we need a rebuild soon or is the balance right for now?

Rosicky 33
Arteta 32
Sagna 31
Flamini 30
Cazorla 29
Mertesacker 29
Fabianski 29
-----------------
Vermaelen 28
Koscielny 28
Podolski 28
Monreal 28
Giroud 27
Diaby 27
------------------
Ozil 25
Walcott 25
Szczesny 24
Gibbs 24
Ramsey 23
Wilshere 22
Jenkinson 22
Sanogo 21
Oxlade-Chamberlain 20
Gnabry 18

Rosicky 33
Arteta 32

Would probably only have a year left in them at this level (Arsenal level) I'd expect them to be phased out/replaced this window.

Sagna 31
Fabianski 29

One will be, good chance both will be gone before the new season.

Vermaelen 28
Monreal 28

Both are not good enough to be starters and I have serious doubts over their ability to be reliable.

Diaby 27

Diaby is Diaby. He wouldn't be at any other club in the world if we didn't feel sorry for him.

That really only leaves

Sagna 31 (If he signs)
Flamini 30
Cazorla 29
Mertesacker 29

As players that will be in the 30 + bracket going into the future. Not too shabby.

I'd guess all of our signings are going to fall into the 22-28 bracket.

Rosicky signed a two year extension I believe, unusual for Wenger to offer that for a player of his age but shows the value he places in Rosicky.

Arteta I agree perhaps has one year left at Arsenal.

Rosicky plays with the energy of an 18 year old, he can stay on until the arthritis kicks in.

Rosicky missed two years of football as well. So even at 33, it's not like he's got the weary, battered body of a 33 year old footballer. Definitely adds to the squad even though he's playing one in three games.
