good news, my layover at LAX has gone from 90 mins to 7 hours. i'm not particularly upset about this

now looking at day accomodation close to LAX for a few hours as we'll have kids with us, and a shower after 15 hours flying sounds delightful. any recommendations there?

Anybody been to Oklahoma City before? Potentially have a race there, but not sure if it's worth skipping and spending more time in Albuquerque/Sedona?

I'm used to Minnesota/Wisconsin for the most part and have never ventured to the Great Plains and have only spent a small amount of time in Arizona.

Any advice on any of the three cities would be fantastic.

Thoughts on Pittsburgh in general?

Solid city, much nicer than i thought. Couple of big colleges so it has a large number of students which is a big plus in my books as i find there are usually lots of bars and cheap places to eat. All the sporting arenas are in one precinct. Pirates ballpark was beautiful and tried to do a tour of Heinz Field but they werent running any that day. Its not the most walkable city but the downtown area and the sporting precinct are along the rivers that flow through the city and it looks really nice.

What do people generally get up to in Philadelphia?

Worked at a summer camp nearby so have spent a fair bit of time there. Found the nightlife to be pretty shit and its pretty scummy in parts but theres so much history in the city and the downtown has a few nice sights. Am tempted to go back just for a Philly cheesesteak from the Reading Terminal Market. Philly sports fans are nuts so i would recommend catching an eagles or Phillies game if you get the chance.

Spent a few nights in OKC as my mates were on exchange at Oklahoma State. Found it to be a pretty cool city, easily worth a day or 2. Had the best barbecue in the States there at some bar and the beers were dirt cheap. Theres a river walk which is like a smaller version of the one in San Antonio. Lots of bars, restaurants, etc. Obviously the bombing memorial is a must see and also catch the Thunder if lucky. Probably not the most exciting city but found it pretty unique and worth a visit.

Philly was a nice town, the old city especially is really cool and classic America when you go toward the river and see all the old bars. The Center City reminded me a bit of Perth, for better or worse, but it was a decent city for a weekend and I drank a fair bit and had what I'd consider a Good Time there. If it were hours away I'd say no but to get away from New York just for the weekend was cool.

Hey has anyone been to Milwaukee before? I've heard it's a pretty good city and a little unheralded, and obviously good for beer drinkers.

I have a few days before I go to Chicago and need a city for a few nights before I head there, so it has to be good, close, and... that's it! Thanks!

I love all of Eastern Wisconsin, but I actually prefer Madison to Milwaukee. What time of the year are you going, and what days of the week? Milwaukee is much larger, but I found Madison more interesting.

In that case, I would definitely head to Milwaukee. It is a unique city in that its downtown is kinda based around the outdoors. There are plenty of parks and lakes within a short distance of the city. There are close to 100 breweries in the state of Wisconsin and they are not like anything else you will experience in America. It's a very different state culturally than the rest of the US, people are far more laidback and patient than you would expect for somewhere that is frozen for 6/7 months of the year. There are a couple of cool museums (Harley Davidson and the Art museum), but it is generally a great city to relax, drink a lot and meet some fantastic people for a few days.

How much is the usual for flights? I'm looking at flying over in January and the cheapest I can find is around 1800 return, with the rest over 2000. I was thinking it'd be around 1200 but yeah, any tips?

I've generally got around $900 return from Brisbane to LA, and then booked my onward connection with Spirit or a cheaper airline. Where are you flying into?

Paid just over a grand for Adelaide to LA return in 2015. My brother spent nearly $2k when he went over last Christmas/New Years so maybe $1800 return at that time of year is normal? If you're flexible with dates when usually you can save a fair bit.

Booked my flights to Canada, paid $1700 to fly Adelaide to Toronto and then flying back home from LA. The flights that left a few days earlier were all around $2k. Lot of the reviews for Air Canada don't sound too good but I think most people expect too much. Just get me and my luggage there in one piece, have the Tv screen working and keep those drinks coming. :D

Best places to visit in Texas? Unique places things to see?

Austin gets talked up a fair bit in here... mainly due to its going out/nightlife scene, but beyond that it really doesn't have a ton of attractions to see... State Capitol and seeing Lake Travis from The Oasis are all that really come to mind... nice looking town though, had a good vibe

San Antonio is good for a day to see the Alamo and to check out the Riverwalk

Dallas has of course the JFK museum (it's done very well, even though I find it slightly morbid that they put the museum in the same location from where he was shot and killed) ... Reunion Tower, Uptown for night life and some interesting neigborhoods like Deep Ellum.... head over to Forth Worth to get a feel of "real Texas"

can't really speak for Houston

if you throw in attending some college/pro sports and reserve some time to get some good Texas BBQ, you'll probably have a good time there... but generally, Texas is a way better state to live in than it is to visit

OKC is an alright city. Big college feel. Not really a lot to see there. ABQ is definitely a better town to hang out in. But I like New Mexico.

Just got home from a US visit.
5 days in LA, 6 days Chicago, 12 days NYC, 4 days in Boston.
Then flew from Boston to Denver and got a Hire car for 10 days. Drove from Denver up to South Dakota - Black Hills, Badlands, Rushmore, Custer State Park. Then back across Wyoming to Utah's National Parks - Zion, Bryce, Arches...then down to Arizona for Grand Canyon & then back up to Colorado again to cross the Rockies back to Denver.
From Denver flew back to LA & then home.
Saw MLB at Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, Yanks, Mets & Red Sox.
Amazing cities, particularly NYC, Chicago & Boston.
Plus it was well worth it to get to the great outdoors in Colorado, Utah, South Dakota etc..
Great trip.

Please tell me you got to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons NP.

Did the same in 2006 - Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Mt Rushmore, Rocky Mountain NP then the Utah NP (Arches, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, Bryce and Zion).

Going over in Oct/Nov for 4 and a bit weeks.

Phoenix - 5 days
Cancun - 5 days
Orlando - 4 days
New York - 6 days
Vegas - 2 days
San Fran - 3 days
LA - 4 days

Heading to some NBA/NFL/NHL games whilst I'm over there. Using Stubhub (any better sites out there?).
Staying at Disneyworld in Orlando, so would it be worth going to Disneyland in LA or are they too similar?
Universal Studios worth it?

Cheers
