I love keeping up to date and seeing what the boys are doing. And I'd love to get my hands on the UTAH schedule booklet thingy the boys got handed out to see out workloads they'd have to endue.

Rather impressed everyone seems to cut ..... except for one. I'll come out and say it but geez for someone so elite Swanny is carrying a few extra isn't he? Now hold your flame replies for a second. I know he's strong, fit, dedicated (probably :p ).... yadda, yadda..... BUT when elite teams always bang on about improvement by 1%-2% is so important .... and that the preseason is sooooo vital in setting for the next season, then wouldn't you think carrying the 1-2 extra kgs that Swanny appears to be holding on to isn't quite conducive in getting the best results? I know it's not a work load thing. I have no doubt he works hard at training. It is purely a diet thing.

Anyone have similar thoughts?

He isn't carrying extra weight it's his skin folds that would be slightly higher than others. A lot of it comes down to genetics some blokes just can't cut up.

Take a look at Krackouer without a top on he looks like a massive sloth. There are also plenty of UFC fighters that aren't cut yet they're still balls of muscle and it works for Swanny so who are we to judge....

Yeah, I thought the same thing with Swanny - looking a little pudgy. UFC is not really a good comparison (nor is any sport). Those fighters don't need to run 15+ km in a game... I am sure he will come good, but he certainly isn't from the Ball / Pendles school of preparation...

Plus it would be a lil awkard to run into this:

I think i'm gonna get me one! Or two!

Same here, was originally quite critical of the magpie on the front but after seeing it, I'm impressed.

I guarantee you that if you roll with a wrestler/BJJ practitioner for 15 minutes you'll be dying. Elite level boxers, who are considered to be amongst the fittest athletes in the world, feel the need to improve their cardio when they get into MMA, such is the toll that it takes.

Regardless, complaints about Swan's body are putting the cart before the horse. The reason we want our guys to be trim and strong is so that they can gain a physical advantage on their opponents... Swan already clearly does that in spades, so why complain about the superficial when the result is what we want it to be?

Have you ever tried to grapple another bloke for three 5 minute rounds? The endurance and dynamic power needed in that sport is phenomenal and even though its hard to compare across sports it would be one of the better comparisons IMO. I'm actually amazed that clubs haven't initiated UFC style training for players to use in contested situations. Because that is when the most energy is expelled during a match.

Look at a bloke that's just put in 3-4 consecutive contested efforts in the space of 5-10 seconds and they will be sucking in the big ones harder than a bloke that's run 80 meters to be on the end of a possession chain to kick a goal. I guess it's just one mans opinion on it though.

15 minutes..? I've tried it (and I am reasonably fit) and I was struggling to move after 2 minutes....

Still, it is very different. Extra weight in BJJ / UFC isn't necessarily a bad thing, and therefore these guys don't need to be fully lean. AFL midfielders these days run around 15km a game, and extra weight when needing to run 15km does make it harder to cover the ground. How many 10km runners do you see with any sort of skinfold?

As I have said, I think using body descriptions from players in other sports (recently we have had basketball, UFC, etc) is not right for AFL, as there is no sport with similar reauirements. But what we can probably agree on is that excess body fat is not advantageous to AFL.

Yeah boxers are super, super fit, although Andre the Giant I'm not so sure about.

Didn't know you needed to be fit for BJs though.

Why is Lynch carrying an Aussie flag?

No. And this is what Swanny thinks.

I think without the tattoos you'd see that he has a massive amount of thigh and core muscles that make him look wide and chubby when in fact its not the case

Swanny would sacrifice a lot of energy in reduced food intake to cut up for something he clearly doesn't need to do. He is the AFL's best repeat speed runner, I think we can leave it at that.
