Drop the tradition I say. Get the great numbers back out there

Lalor gets 4
Seth can have 7
Smillie can have 9
Hotton in 29 makes sense
Trainor can have 2
Armstrong in 12
Faull in 8
McAuliffe in 11
Banks in 6

**** knows really. I just want to see the great numbers back out there instead of being mothballed. Let the kids make their own history in our greatest numbers

Faull - gets the toughest number ( whatever that is)
I think 21 might be the number.

Balme, Taylor, Tuck, Townsend. None of these guys were adverse to the physical stuff.

It’s a new era. Scrap the low numbers being earned. Give Lalor and Smillie 4 and 9. They want them. Back them in. Armstrong wore 12 and Faull 8 in juniors they are vacant so let them have them
Sends a poor message to all the other players on the list who were made to earn them

100% scrap the later numbers to draftees crap. It was a Hardwick thing and he’s pissed off so stuff anything associated with him.

Give Lalor #4
Armstrong #12
Smillie #9
Hotton #7

Genuinely don’t care what they get just let the kids create their own destiny, if Lalor doesn’t live up to the #4 then who cares, Dusty was a generational player and everyone banged on about him not living up to Royce or Raines when he was given it looks pretty silly these days.

Just because those numbers are associated to triple premiership players doesn’t mean they’re sacrosanct so just give them out and see what happens.

Agree
Faull in 8 and Hotton in 29 though....
Banks, Campbell and Green all deserve new numbers too
I understand the sentiment of giving Hotton 29 but I don't want him to be in the shadow of Bolton or be pigeon holed by fans as the next Bolton.
I want him to build his own legacy with a number like 11 or 16 which haven't been used for a while.

I think 7 suits him best anyway and Baker doesn't leave a huge shadow.

AFL Draft: Richmond debate jumper numbers as Sam Lalor chases Dustin Martin’s no.4.

Richmond is expected to announce the jumper numbers for its draft haul in the coming days, with the club still unsure whether to forego club tradition.

Richmond could resist the temptation to hand its new draftees the jumper numbers of triple premiership champions Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin in part to allow them to earn their stripes as Tigers players.

The club’s new No.1 overall pick Sam Lalor plays in the manner of the retiring champion Martin and having played junior footy in the No.4 is keen to secure that cherished jumper at Punt Road.

But Richmond coach Adem Yze told the Herald Sun the club would this week discuss whether handing the club’s draftees higher jumper numbers would provide a two-fold benefit.

It would take the pressure off some of those eight 2024 draftees but also follow a long-held tradition of players earning those early jumper numbers as Richmond men.

That decision will be made this week but not before weighing up the preferences of players including pick one Lalor, pick seven Josh Smillie, pick 12 Taj Hotton and pick 14 Jonty Faull.

Riewoldt played his entire career in the No.8 jumper, Trent Cotchin played 16 years in the No.9 jumper but Martin started with a much higher number before securing No.4 in his second season.

The historically important numbers of Dylan Grimes (Roy Wright and Ian Stewart’s No.2), Daniel Rioli (Jack Dyer’s 17) and Shai Bolton (Kevin Bartlett’s 29) are also available.

“It’s funny. I had that discussion with (Lalor) the other night on draft night, was sitting there just to get his feel for it and he is a confident kid, and they all are,” Yze told the Herald Sun.

We’ve not only just number four, we’ve got number nine available, number eight, so we’ve got a lot of single digit numbers.

“Dusty is a star, and so is Trent Cotchin and Jack Riewoldt so those numbers are going to be taken eventually but we’ve just got to weigh up whether we want to do that straight away and put that sort of pressure on them, or whether they come into our program what you normally would for like a Rhyan Mansell (number 31) or Tom Brown (number 30).

“They’ve come in and they’ve started in a higher number, and they’ve earned their spot in our team and then will move.

“So we’ll be making those decisions as a club over the next couple of days.

So we don’t want to put too much pressure on them, but at the same time, there’s an element that they’re coming into a footy club and we’ve got 35 other players that have sort of earned their way, and they’ve never really walked into a low number. Like Dusty started with 36 so we’ll make those decisions over the next couple of days.”

Yze said Tom Lynch had returned to the club and was fighting fit after two seasons out with hamstring and foot concerns but would likely be managed until post-Christmas.

The club’s four ACL victims Mykelti Lefau, Judson Clarke, Josh Gibcus and Tylar Young will all return to football early in the season but none are likely to be ready for round 1.

Lefau tore his ACL in the first days of June but has made excellent gains, while Gibcus (March injury), Clarke (mid-April) and Young (late May) will all be eased back in.

“Mykelti is moving really well. He’s done one before and he’s a powerful man so whether that helps but he’s probably in front of a few of the bigger boys. So Tylar, Judson and Gibcus are a little slower than him but going well.

“I think from round 3 or 4 they will start to integrate back into some footy. So at the start of the season they will be unavailable but they are progressing nicely.

“Lynch just loves the game and he’s our vice captain for a reason. He just wants to perform for the club. We are just trying to get him through a pre-season so he can hit the ground running and have an uninterrupted season because he deserves it.

“One of the young boys will probably live with him for a few weeks and that’s great but our main priority is to get him firing for round 1 so he can get out there against Carlton in round 1.”

I’m kinda 50\50 on it

I understand the excitement around our new draftees and wanting them to get them straight into the “good numbers” but also something cool about seeing a player put in the hard work to “earn” a number that kind of represents how they play

Great idea! Let's completely dissociate anything Hardwick did at the club because he left.
I mean he only gave 12 years of service in which he led us out of the doldrums and to 3 flags.

Absurd.

It’s not dissociating our Hardwick era, it’s moving to a new direction and not always looking back.

Premierships aren’t won because of what’s happened in the past.

Next everyone will be dissatisfied with Shane Dunne has he hasn’t gone on a football program to tell everyone his vision.

Huh?

Old mate literally said re Hardwick... "he’s pissed off so stuff anything associated with him".

I was disagreeing with that point because it is completely absurd.

Moving on

100% he took off the second he realised we weren’t going to win a flag after bringing in hopper and Taranto, not only that he poached half our back room and now our reigning B&F.

I’ll forever be grateful for what he did for our club especially as a 38yo who up until 17 had seen absolutely no form of success at all so he will forever be champion in my eyes much like the players who have left.

But as mentioned this is a new era where we are literally starting from the bottom so what’s the point of continuing his processes and traditions when he’s no longer apart of the club.
It’s basically being stuck on an ex mrs while dating another bird.

Let the kids build this new era with whatever number they want, there were plenty of spuds who wore those numbers before the champions did so there is no harm in giving them out and seeing how it plays out.
