Jagga Smith from Carlton got number 7 other clubs are giving there top draft kid a good number, & I have no issue with our new recruits earning a good number, but when you see Ben Miller getting 12, you have to say this whole earn your jumper stuff is BS...

Been my opinion all along, this whole not handing over lowerish numbers to new top recruits is a load of horse manure, a concept that was brought in by Dimma and it's treated like it's a legacy.

Absolute joke

Don't mind the allocation of numbers. Let them make their own history in the numbers they have been given rather than trying to live up to the recent history associated with numbers like 4 8 & 9.

I like that we didn't hold over the jumpers of those who opted to depart and instead gave them out. Save that for retiring champs, it would have been great to have Grimes number 2 held over, but understand it being handed to Hopper given it was his number at the Giants.

So the numbers are not hallowed enough to not be given to players who have yet to play a single AFL game but hallowed enough to not give it to a player who has battled and kept his name on a list for six years after the last player who is revered for the number last played 15 years ago?

I have no issues with the recent champions being honored a bit higher than the rest, whilst noting we are a club with nearly 150 years of history. We have more than a few numbers covered with past champs.

Can’t say I really agree, these players can make their own history even if given important numbers

It also sets a weird precedent in “resting” numbers that belonged to 3 time flag players and including number 10 in that reasoning that was active only last year and wasn’t rested as soon and Sheds retired

Does that mean we are going to rest 25 post Nank or 1 and 35 post Vlossy and Broad

If they didn’t want Lalor compared to Dusty they could of just as easily given him 9 or 10 and Smilie number 4

Thats all well and good but i bet they will change numbers before their career is done.

The number 10 one has really done a number on me (pun intended)

They want to rest the number now out of respect but didn’t want to rest it 2 years ago when they gave it to Rioli Jr who had only played 17 games at the time and still hadn’t cemented himself in the best 22

propa club now

we are experts in non footballing matters

Wait, are people complaining about what numbers players have?
Yeah I’m melting pretty hard atm

Think it’s going to take me a few days to process

I blame the club for waiting us wait so long for such mid announcements and raised the expectations

They should of just done it the day they got their lockers

I don't think it's the 3 x flag winning aspect, but more that they're all 300 gamers, which is a pretty exclusive club at Richmond given that we only had Bartlett Dyer & Bourke before Edwards Riewoldt Cotchin & Martin joined them. IMO that's the aspect that sees those numbers being held over. Maybe that's the new tradition that has been created here. Maybe the number 10 is being held over for an indigenous player that comes along and earns the number. Maybe 4 8 & 9 are being held over until we do get a kid who earns them through actual performances on the field rather than just being a high draft pick and asking for them.

If that is the reasoning the club needs to do a better job in explaining such especially given 10 was used for the last two seasons anyway

But if the numbers of 300 games are important why just lump 29 in with the 1st year players?
Shouldn’t 29 be earnt like they want 4,8,9 and 10?

also just makes a future promotion of Lalor and Smilie look kinda dumb (the two best prospects out of the draft so most likely of promotion) and they are already wearing numbers that would be players are upgraded to in the first place

For arguments sake next year we could see Smilie given number 9 after a fantastic debut season and Trainor upgraded to Smilies 16

It’s just silly and inconsistent

On MRJ and the number 10 I have a weird memory that Edwards asked him to take it once he retired (might be misremembering)

Why should Lalor get number 4 why should he get it just cause he wants it? I dare say Alger would want to wear number 4 just as badly

Going pick 1 means stuff all compared to knuckling down and showing you deserve it

As I’ve said I love making them earn it. Unfortunate that we’re such a young team that even without giving low numbers we have to give out 16 and 22 odd but it is what it is

Maybe they do, maybe they don't. The thing is they get a relatively low number that they can start their careers in and make their own history in if they do stay with it.

22 hasn't really been a great number since Rowlings finished, since then it's been worn by Nicholls Bower Biddiscombe Roach Meyer Lonergan Caddy & Hopper.

16 is similar, since Bryan Wood, it's been worn by Walsh Wallace Jackson Holland Morrison P.Bowden McGuane Hampson Weller & Aarts

In both of those cases, I wouldn't say there have been many great players, some very good, but not great. So maybe they have been given the challenge of making those numbers great rather than trying to live up to the legendary careers so soon after they have departed.
