Afternoon BigFooty,

I’m Kobi, Matt’s son. Only time I visited here was to learn something new about my old man’s old man, who I understand to be immortalised in the folklore of the forum.

For a good part of my life, Matt was immersed in this community. While I knew that Grizzlym was a figure of some prominence (once upon a time), only recently did I discover he posted 93,000 odd times - equating to something like 30 posts a day over 11 years. Eventually, work and family took precedence and my father didn’t have the time or brain space to post anymore. Who knows though, maybe my mum had a word to him.

For anyone wondering about the circumstances of his passing, Matt died of a heart attack last week at 53 with no previously known health complications. His death was a tragedy, and a complete shock.

My father was a smart, smart man who ironically enough, bared many of the same quirks and eccentricities which he wrote about his own dad having. He was a loving parent, a great role model, and a stable presence in my life.

If anyone wishes to share any stories /ask me any questions about Matt feel free to pm or respond on the thread. Happy to share anything I can.

Sorry for your loss mate, your dad was well liked here!

Just want to pay my respect to Grizz and offer condolences to his family.

Like many others have said, Grizz was a large presence when I first started visiting the forum and his knowledge, humour and the tone he set for this board were all a big part of what made this a great place to be and to discuss all things footy related.

Sad news…

Welcome, Kobi.

Matt passed a few stories on to us moderators about you and your love of Cricket and Buddy over the years he was here, he was certainly very proud of you.

Grizzlym was a prolific poster for a time and was across all gamuts of the numerous boards, particularly when he was an Admin of the site.

We’d regular send each other links to crazy and mysterious stories, so much so we even set up a “mysteries and conspiracies” board that we both moderated for a period.

He was a cool head, and although you can’t see what is written on the moderators forum, I can tell you that there is a long line of moderators from other club boards saddened by the news who continue to pass on their regards and make mention of what a great person and “mentor” for new moderators your father was once we’d donned “the blue tracksuits”, as he’d call it.

In the time that Matt didn’t post here we had quite a few posters ask if everything was fine, as far as we knew it was, and his absence was purely his own choosing, but regardless of the time that has passed between his last post in 2019 and now there are a lot of posters here who will miss him and his way with words.

Sincere condolences to you and your family.

Welcome, Kobi.

Condolences to you and your family mate at this tough time.

Matt was a fantastic mentor for many of us Mods and was always willing to help out anytime it was needed. Fantastic poster and always fair. RIP, Matt.

Jesus Christ was not expecting to see this when I logged on.

We had so many awesome chats. One of the few people on this forum that brought waves of positivity and fun and enthusiasm with every post. Infectious positivity and energy.

@grizzlymjnr hope you're all looking after each other and doing ok under the circumstances. Thanks for the post and the update.

They say a person dies two deaths - one when he actually dies, and one when his name is spoken for the last time.

Your father will therefore be immortal - at least on BigFooty. Sincerest condolences and I am glad to call him a mentor and dare I say it, a friend, around this site. Please be comforted by the fact he will be fondly remembered by hundreds (if not thousands) that used BigFooty during those 11 years.

Very sad news indeed. A well loved and respected person around here, we've all experienced his passion for the game and the BigFooty community.

It's also a timely reminder that we only get one life to live, and so we should do what makes us happy every day.

Rest In Peace Matt.

Sad to hear this news. I didn’t know Grizzlym but his posting style was very infectious and positive. Definitely had a way with words.

It almost feels like I am attending one of those funerals where you see people you haven’t crossed paths with for a long time. I even saw Neville Bartos post in this thread whose name I recall from many year ago on here. I guess it’s a mark of respect by the impact that Grizzlym had that these old posters have returned. RIP.

Dear Kobi, thanks for taking the time to reach out to everyone in a universe where your father truly was someone who was very well liked and respected. Your post hit a nerve as you described in exact detail what had occurred to my own father a number of years ago. I know that hearing condolences and stories of your old man from multitudes of people can be comforting in a fashion, but I shall leave that to others. All I can offer is the knowledge that, despite the shock and heartbreak, that time truly does heal all wounds. Slowly but surely. I'm reminded of a saying, "Don't be sad your experience is over, be happy that it occurred". I am sorry for your loss, I hope in time that sadness is gradually replaced more and more with happy memories you shared with your father. Best wishes to you and your family.

Wow, I am shocked and saddened by this news. Vale Grizz and bless you for all the kindness that you showed to all.
Condolences to his family and those that he touched.
RIP mate

Gutted.

He was a super active admin when I first became a mod, and he couldn't have been a more nicer and helpful bloke. Even had a few off topic chats too.

RIP Grizz, you'll be missed mate.

Incredibly funny human, back when I was a bit more wild on Big Footy had plenty of great exchanges with Matt and copped some well deserved infractions 😂

It’s a really sad reminder that behind the keyboard and the user names we all see and engage with for many years is a father, a husband, a friend and a human. To Kobi and the rest of his family remember the good times and ride the wave of emotions that will come your way not only now but over the coming years.

Vale Grizz
