Absolutely gutted.

Was finally showing potential at a new club in the prime of his life (after being played in a forward pocket at the Pies despite being an inside midfielder). When he went to Port, I was so happy for him because he was able to finally break through and cement a spot in the midfield.

Really hope the boys battle for him this weekend like he would have done. I know he's no longer a part of the club, but he has so many friends here. No doubt they'll be wearing black arm bands.

Awful, awful news, being a father myself i cannot imagine what his family must be going through right now. What a waste of young & talented life.

Some of our blokes will be affected by this no doubt having played with him for all those years.

They most definitely will they are only human and he made some good mates at the pies.

RIP JMac.

Very sad stuff. I was there in the rooms for his first game at the Pies. Got to sit in the box behind all the coaches. Will be dearly missed by all those involved; family, friends, teammates and the entirety of the AFL.

I am gutted for him, his family and all of his mates (plenty of whom are at Collingwood).

What a terrible thing. I hope his mates can play well on the weekend despite this horrible news.

This is heartbreaking. As a parent of 2 little youngsters can't bear to imagine the shock and utter grief the family must be going through at this tragic passing of a young man just coming into the best years of his life. Rest in peace young JMac.
Terrible news. Poor kid. I'm stunned.

What a ****ing terrible turn of events :(

Rest in peace John, may your family see the sunlight again soon.

With him playing at Port I was stoked, and began to think that, with our injury run...what might have been this year had he stayed with us. He was looking good and seemed to fit in really well at Port. Argh poor young man :(

Condolences to John's teammates and friends at your club.

It hardly seems important right now, but I'm now going to be supporting Collingwood for the rest of this finals series harder than I've ever supported a team other than Port in my life. If John is somewhere looking down on us then I'm sure he'd love to see his old teammates win a premiership, and for that reason I hope they do too.

RIP John. Although it didn't work out well at Collingwood, we all wished him a great career at Port and he finally started to get game time and became a decent footballer and this tragedy hits him. I am in shock and I never knew him personally, I couldn't imagine the pain his family and relatives along with his team mates at Collingwood and Port Adelaide would be feeling right now.

It will affect the players in a big way this week and I hope he get's the right respect from the AFL and there is a minute silence before both games on the weekend because not only have we lost a young man we have lost an AFL player.

My thoughts are with his family and close friends and I surely hope they did not find out the news via media .

Just tragic news, one second you're here, the next you can be gone. Never take anything for granted. Was stoked to see J Mac playing some great footy for Port this season. My heart goes out to his Family, girlfriend, friends and all of those he was close to at the PAFC and CFC. I really hope the pies can rally together this week and play some great footy in memory of John.

R.I.P - John McCarthy

Condolences to the CFC, its supporters and friends who knew JMac over his time there.
This is as much a sad time for you as it is for us.
Much as it pains me to do so normally, I'll be barracking for you this week in his honour.

...

My thoughts are with his family and close friends and I surely hope they did not find out the news via media .

His immediate and extended family have been notified.

To all of the Power faithful who have come here and expressed their grief and also added that they will support us this week, thank you.

Thank you for being able to see past the shock, the grief and the sadness, and to suggest such a "football" thing to do. It is truly quite amazing and shows great character that through the haze of all this sadness, there can be solace found in footy. Hang in there and know that even though we are the Magpies by name, we share a common history and much respect.

Thoughts with you in our time of shared grief.

I hope that your team can put on a performance fitting this fine young man this week. Results ultimately don't matter but the enjoyment of taking the field with your mates is so important.

just been in shock. saw him play as a junior and just been keen for him to do well wherever he was at and he was going real well this year. from all reports he was a terrific kid and its a massive waste. thoughts with all those close to him.

As Port are out of the race for this year I am 100% behind Collingwood this week to fly the flag for Johnny Mac. I have no doubt your supporters are feeling this tragic news just as much as we are. I also have no doubt Collingwood will lift this week. We as clubs have so much in common and sad news like today puts what is worth treasuring in this game into perspective. Go Pies! and RIP Johnny Mac.
