Too young to fully comprehend his influence, but old enough to know and respect his name. My dad tells me that Ron Barassi and Don Nicholls were two of his childhood heroes.

Rest in peace, Ron.
Influence indeed.
Had my Ron Barrassi plastic footy boots and a plastic footy, played the 70 Grand final in the back yard, on my own.
Went from tears to cheers. Thanks for that day Ron.

I was so sad to hear the news of the great man's passing earlier today.

I was fortunate enough to meet him on a number of occasions when I was a kid - my closest mate growing up was Wayne Harmes, who's great uncle of course was Norm Smith, so the Harmes' family had a very close association with Ron.

To Wayne, he was 'Uncle Ron' - but when I was with Wayne, I wasn't quite sure what to call him as I was in awe in his company, so nervously it was "Mr Barassi". Such was the character of the man, he just gave me that big Barassi smile, and said "you can call me Uncle Ron as well if you'd like, son."

RIP Uncle Ron

Don was Big Nick's brother from memory?

Something for those that love traditions in AFL.

Ron was born and raised in a Collingwood and Carlton zone. Obviously, Dad played for Melbourne and Ron was desperately keen to play for Melbourne. The first influence that Ron had on the VFL/ AFL was the introduction of the father son rule

Without Barassi it's quite possible that the heritage of the cultural Football Club wouldn't be what it is today If only looking at this rule. Consider that players like the full back of the century. Stephen Silvagni and now Jack we're able to be Carlton players because of this role and We have the twins coming after next year

The first part of Ron's extraordinary legacy will live on and bare fruit for our beloved Club for decades to come.

Yes, and also passed away this week (hence the black armbands we wore last night).

When I was younger, so much younger than today, I worked for RDB on King St.

I’d heard this story that he constantly doodled with a pad & paper.

Sure enough, all over the office were those old A5 notepads & you knew he’d been in there as he’d doodled birds eye views of the oval, with the centre square, dotted goal posts & arrows all over the place.

Always stuck with me that.

He was biggest of ‘em all, though EJ called him Mrs Football.😎👍

My mum loved Ron. I think it was that shared Italian heritage. As an active volunteer at Carlton for many years she had plenty of contact with him. It continued beyond the Carlton years. I recently came across a thank you note personally signed by Ron after North lost to Richmond in the 1974 GF. She’d sent him a telegram before the match wishing him luck and he thanked her for the gesture. A man of many colours who was loved by all.

I know it’s a sad time but what’s life without memories. I read this in The Age today. I hope it works.

The State Funeral will be telecast live from the MCG this morning at 10.30am on C7 & C9.

Yes Carlton wanted Don but his father told Ken Hands something like, If you want Don you have to take his younger brother John as well.
Carlton wore black armbands against Melbourne for Don who died during the week.

Legend has it that - Ken Hands or Bert Deacon said something along the lines of “if we sign up Don we need to take the fat kid as well” - referring to John Nicholls.

:p

Barrassi dwarfs football greats like Whitten, Mathews or Eddie Mcguire. RDB stands alone on the greatest person in the history of Australian Football
Eddie McGuire is a football great?
