VFL 2025

Star fullback Nathan Cooper has retired after 56 VFL games and a Premiership. It's a body blow for the bees.

Cooper, Coughlan, Riley Bice & Aiden Johnson will be very very hard to replaced for the Bees. Particularly Cooper and Johnson. Not easy to find talls for the stand alone sides.

They’ve lost Annard & Northam to the SANFL as well, so their ruck depth will be tested too.

I know they tried hard to get Sellers, but the link to AFL with Essendon was too much of a draw card.

Coburg, Frankston and Port Melb have done well. Werribee have brought in youth but they've lost experience players.

Port Melbourne recruiting is the Port Melbourne of old. Won't surprise to see them bounce in a big way
All of our former VFA standalones appear to be excelling in the recruitment arena. It would be interesting if eight out of the nine finished in the top eight?

While this outcome is possible, it remains highly improbable. Should this occur, it would represent a significant setback for the AFL, potentially accelerating the introduction of an AFL reserves competition.

As we look forward to next year’s VFL season, keep a close watch on Port Melbourne! This club has a strong history and continues to recruit effectively. With an abundance of new talent both on and off the field, they are unlikely to stay at the bottom of the ladder. They are well-positioned to make a serious impact.

Geelong VFL training squad revealed as local stars get chance to impress

Geelong VFL has unveiled its training squad — including 34 talents from the region. And it features the brother of an AFL star and three sons of guns. See the full list here.

Geelong VFL has locked in its training list for the 2025 pre-season with 46 talents from across Victoria to lock horns.

Members of the training squad will be buoyed by Geelong’s selection of Cats VFL ruckman Joe Pike in last month’s rookie draft.

The Barwon Heads product spent a year with the Geelong VFL program before being taken by the Cats.

The players training with the Cats hail from Corowa on the New South Wales to Portland in south western Victoria, and there are a host of new faces.

One of the most notable is Colac & District league sensation Charlie McCartin, the brother of Sydney defender Tom and 2014 No.1 draft pick Tom, who dominated under ex-Carlton stopper Ed Curnow at Lorne this season.

McCartin had a handful of clubs heading out to Lorne to watch him in action and the key defender played two games in Sydney’s VFL side, having been a part of the Swans AFL recruiting team previously.

Geelong Falcons prospects Dan Lowther, who tested at the state combine and Kobe George are also part of the squad along with sons of guns Noah Caracella and Alfie Wojcinski.

Caracella, the son of Brisbane, Essendon and Collingwood player Blake, played a game with Essendon VFL under his father, while Wocjinski is the son of three-time premiership Cat David.

Former Geelong listed player Osca Riccardi, son of Cats great Peter, also features after recovering from a serious brain infection last year that left him on life support.

Of the list, 34 have interchange clubs in the AFL Barwon region: 25 from the Geelong league, five from the Bellarine, three from the Geelong & District and McCartin in the CDFNL.

Two of those GDFNL are East Geelong products in Ben Crombie and Austin Mulvahill, while Oscar Barter has been rewarded for his strong season where he booted 45 goals in 16 matches for Anakie.

South Barwon boasts six players in the training squad, including Mathieson medallist Doyle Madigan – who wasn’t part of the VFL program last year – and Port Fairy recruit Oscar Pollock, while Bell Park has five.

St Joseph’s spearhead Paddy De Grandi is another notable inclusion to the training squad after slotting 61 goals in 20 matches this season.

The final 38-player VFL squad was finalised in March last year.

A fair bit of talk on this forum as was the case the past two seasons of Port Melbourne making a big impact only to miss the target by miles, i feel after a couple of seasons of not reaching expectations some may be keeping a lid on it. Other than the obvious (Heppell) wondering which of the recruits people are getting excited over and who out of the new lads will make a greater impact than the big outs of Gowers and Flockart?

For me im.interested in seeing how Wyll Martin and Lazarro will perform.

Lazzaro an A grader at VFL level. The other incomings are probably equal or weaker than the outgoings

I'll be intruged to see if anything changes quickly at Port with a new coach and another high list turnover. Yes the recruitings been great but the synergy with a new look team under a new coach will take some time.

Carlton being very aggressive in recruitment this year...

VFL: Ethan Phillips links with VFL Blues after being delisted by Hawthorn

Cut by Hawthorn after one AFL game, key defender Ethan Phillips is eyeing an opening at Carlton, where he’s signed for the VFL team and hopes to get an SSP training call-up.

@paulamy375

December 3, 2024 - 5:47PM

He was delisted at the age of 25 after one game for Hawthorn, but Ethan Phillips believes his AFL career is only getting started, not finished.

“I do think my best football is to come,’’ the key defender said.

“I loved my experience at the Hawks and I’m certainly better for it. I wish it was for longer but now I’ve got to go again.’’

It will be with Carlton’s VFL squad, with an eye on being called up to trial for an SSP rookie-listing.

With two places up for grabs, the Blues are putting their 2024 VFL best and fairest Liam McMahon, Denver Grainger-Barras, Sam Durdin, Matt Carroll and Will White through their paces.

It was through this year’s SSP that Phillips gained his chance with Hawthorn.

The 2022 winner of the VFL’s Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal, the 196cm right-footer nicknamed “Easy’’ was signed in mid-February after James Blanck was put on the long-term injury list.

Phillips had been training at Box Hill Hawks after transferring from Port Melbourne.

Ethan Phillips played well in his only game for Hawthorn.

Given a debut against Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval, he looked unhurried and at home, collecting 10 disposals, eight intercept possessions and three marks.

The Hawks said on their socials that he had played a “cracking’’ first game.

“The feedback from all the coaches was that I played really well,’’ Phillips said.

“I got a really good rating. I think I showed I was more than capable at the level. But James Sicily was coming back from his shoulder (injury) and you can’t keep the captain out, can you mate?’’

Phillips played 14 VFL games for Box Hill Hawks, missing a few with a minor keen injury.

He was named in the 40-player squad for the VFL team of the year.

But after the season, as trade talk emerged around Hawthorn luring Josh Battle and Tom Barrass, Phillips knew his time as a Hawk was up.

“I think Hawthorn were impressed with my commitment to my football and their program. But it shows how brutal the industry can be. You bring in Tom Barrass and Josh Battle and suddenly you’re forced out,’’ he said.

“Mark McKenzie (list manager) was pretty open that my fate depended on whether or not they got Tom Barrass. So my manager and I were pretty proactive around trying to find a club for next year. We had a little bit of interest from a few clubs and had a few meetings. Unfortunately I couldn’t get myself on a list straight away but I’m pretty excited about the prospects at Carlton. I think there’s a need for key defenders and I think I can be a good fit.’’

Phillips ripened into a leading VFL defender as he combined football with his work in logistics.

He said his football improved in a full-time environment as he gained physical strength and smarts.

But he said he had yet to do a full AFL pre-season.

“I reckon you gain the most ground in a pre-season … if I got to do one, I’d make huge leaps and bounds,’’ he said.

“Where I’m at now, I feel I’ve got so much growth and development in front of me. Hopefully I can get that opportunity to show it. I’ve got a bit to offer Carlton. I’m going compete and get my job done and the team first really.’’

Two other delisted former AFL players have landed at the Blues, Cooper Hamilton from GWS and Francis Evans from Port Adelaide.

Carlton has also landed well-regarded Calder Cannons graduate Nash King, who last month was described by AFL draft ambassador Kevin Sheehan as a midfielder with “exceptional’’ speed. He used it to “great effect to burst from stoppages and open up the game’’.

King averaged 24 disposals in his 11 matches for the Cannons this year and had three games for Vic Metro at the national Under 18 championships.

Mitch Lloyd (GWV Rebels) and Zac Harding (Murray Bushrangers), both of whom were also overlooked in the draft, are training with the Blues.
