VFL curtain raisers at the MCG

Absolute no-brainer for me. Turf technology is so good that the old excuse of wrecking the ground is not as valid (maybe in the depths of Winter).

Let's give supporters value for money and throw in the curtain raiser where possible. Would also sort out some of the gate problems at Etihad where people miss half the first quarter because everyone turns up at the same time - this would stagger the arrivals.

I'd said a few weeks ago on the Carlton site that one of the side-benefits of being turfed out of Friday nights to Saturday and Sunday afternoons is the Blues could use that opportunity to lobby for more Northern Blues games as a curtain raisers.

Whst sort of increase in crowds do you expect, 2.5%? Maybe increased sales pies & grog ..

 Pfft

We've had NEAFL curtain raisers at Spotless since forever. Back to the future in the fringe areas if the game I see.

Maybe wait until your club has some history worth noting before you comment on it doing things "since forever".

MULTIPLE VFL curtain-raisers will return to the home of football in 2019.

An agreement, in principle, struck on Monday between the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) and AFL sees four VFL fixtures set for the MCG prior to AFL matches next year.

In a boost for fans, it will also result in the AFL reducing the time between the end of a curtain-raiser and the start of an AFL matches from around 60 minutes to a minimum of 35-45 minutes.

FULL AFL FIXTURE Every round, every game

It comes as the VFL fixture is set to be announced on Wednesday, with specific curtain-raiser details expected to be finalised in the New Year.

Marvel Stadium curtain-raisers are also set to rise from three in 2018, with affiliate-tenants North Melbourne, Essendon, Western Bulldogs (Footscray), St Kida (Sandringham) and Carlton (Northern Blues) tipped to be involved.

AFL.com.au understands the move was originally raised by Channel Seven in a cost-saving strategy to create a VFL-AFL double header prior to their broadcast Sunday 3.20pm AFL game.

With camera equipment, staff and broadcast trucks already set up at the ground, it will allow the VFL coverage to roll straight into the AFL pre-game and the match.

VFL matches tipped to be held at the MCG include Richmond's clashes with Box Hill (Hawthorn) in May and the Northern Blues in August prior to their respective AFL matches that day.

WHO MAKES FINALS? Do the 2019 Ladder Predictor

Geelong's annual Country Match with Essendon on Sunday May 5 is also being discussed to hold a curtain-raiser between the club's VFL sides.

The Cats are also planning on holding two curtain-raisers prior to AFL fixtures against St Kilda (round 17) and North Melbourne (round 21) at GMHBA Stadium – down from three in 2018.

Fans will also be able to watch the AFL Academy under-18s take on Melbourne's VFL affiliate Casey in a hit-out prior to the Demons' clash with St Kilda in round five at the MCG.

The decision to scrap the official warm-up last year allowed the move of the curtain-raiser to be pushed closer to the start of the AFL fixture.

Last year the curtain-raisers at Marvel Stadium and GMHBA Stadium all finished at least 70 minutes prior to the AFL match.

Me as a kid.

7am bus into Geelong CBD, walk to Kardinia.
8am queue at Moorabool St gates, city end.
10am gates open, bolt in and get my regular seats on wing/hff, city end. (right where Keith Grieg got crunched). Roll out the old sleeping bag and spread the blanket to save seats. Spending the next 2 1/2 hours defending my turf.
11am reserves start.
12:30pm mum, brother, sisters and friends rock up
1:30pm head off into the Geelong rooms and watch their last half hour of preparation.
2:00pm sit back down and watch the game
End of game run onto the ground, win, lose or draw, clap the players off, run with them. Have a game of kick to kick with brother and mates we find out on the ground.

If for some reason the reserves were playing elsewhere, we'd get the u/19s.

Great days.

Used to do similar. Can still remember July 30, 2011. Rock up about 5-10 minutes into the first quarter when the VFL side had 3-4 goals on the board, and sat back and watched the VFL side rack up 31 goals against Casey, followed by the AFL side run rampant and kick 37 against the Dees. Ended up seeing over 60 goals kicked that day. :)

Seems stupid that the they are allowing Curtain Raisers on The G, yet interstate clubs like West Coast ain't allowed to train there ...

I really do understand now why non-vic club supporters have a chip on the shoulder. They are really up against it winning finals at The G.

Vic Privilege strikes again ;)

Since when were Vic clubs allowed to train on the 'G?

I'm not sure about SA but Sandgropers have always had a big chip on their shoulder when it comes to eastern states, in particular, Victoria. I always said, if you're going to play either of the WA sides, this bloke needs to be first picked.

Genuinely have not heard this be an issue (inb4 "yeah cause you're a norf supporter lmao"). How often does this happen?

I'm pretty sure on some of the bigger games with your Richmond and Essendon playing there has been significant delays at the gate and people complaining (and to be fair probably more on a Friday night game) .

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying it's a huge issue but if you have a curtain raiser that people are interested in (ie. your Magoos) playing you virtually guarantee people staggering the time they come to the ground.

Went to the last WACA Ashes Test. Not exaggerating when I say I had to line up for at least 30 minutes. Get to the front and there's only two ****ing turnstiles at the gate. That place was a shithole.
