Just thought I'd start up some conversation and get in early. Who went to watch these games? Who Impressed? and so on and so on.....

I'm very curious of how Alex Lee went.

Footyman, Sec, Weaver?
Disappointing.

Played forward virtually the entire first three quarter match, including having a lot of time in the goalsquare as Dickson's go to player. The only thing I will say is it didn't get down there a lot.

The standard of that match was appaulling from both sides, absolutely disgusting how Metro play their footy. Certainly Dickson's obsession with isolated forwards means he has one bloke in the goalsquare, three blokes across the half forward line and the other two "forward pockets" become extra wingman. All it does it bottle up the midfield causing a extra players hanging around the ball, play being forced extremely wide and a rediculous amount of stoppages. I can't stand his approach, it's the same old crap year after year. But at the end of the day all he is about is winning trophies (eg. you would have noticed his plug in the Herald Sun yesterday about how many trophies his boys have won the past few years). Never gloats much about how many draftees he supplies though, or how his guns never make it and struggle in VFL reserve grade the next year.

I was obviously there today, I'll have to read through what I took down and then post a bit later tonight after I do some other stuff.

But for Metro, Bradley Kelleher was really good in defence at full back, Daniel Hayes put in a solid show and would have to be in the mix (bottom age, late addition to squad), Rees Thomas was outstanding the number of marks he took yet again, Matt Spangher across half back played one of his better games, Simon Phillips certainly shows he will be a good crumber in the forward line.

For Country, Tim Looby deep in the backline was terrific in the first game. Weeks and Grig did fairly well in the second match. Tom Dowd was alright across half back on Phillips, West was decent in the ruck. Was my first look at a lot of the country kids so people who have seen them before can probably offer better comparisons.

Poor standard today, partly as the oval was so wet!

Not many stood out:

Country:

-Simpkin did some things early, died off.
-Crook did some good things, not many.
-Drum was quiet. Neagle likewise.
-Selwood has terrific hands. Luke Ball-esque.

Metro:

-I like Hayes. Good brain when he wants to use it. Still has plenty of time to develop.
-Krakouer was very good in a few passages of play.
-Phillips was goal hungry.
-Dowler. I honestly expected more, but he's a good size and showed signs of talent when taking that contested mark. Needs to work on his second efforts alot more.
-Muir was average.
-Houli is fun to watch. Good kick on him.
-Kelleher and Spangher put in very respectable games. Play team footy.
-Not sure about Ryan Jackson. A bit unobtrustive.
-Liked Warnock in the ruck.
-Marc Murphy is a bit small but uses the ball very well.

Hope the standard picks up in the Championship!

Thought he presented very well and impressed me with his attacking work. Defensively though, I felt he stood back a bit and was a bit lost.

Took alot of marks on his own. It would have been nice if his opponent was in the same post code. Leishout were the hell were you ???? 20 metres away every time Rees took a mark was not great defensive play.

He took a lot of marks because he works hard!! Lazy opponent maybe, but he leads and leads and leads all day long. If a player can do what he does all day long he deserves to take some marks for having such a high work rate.

Good if you don't like him, he deserves to end up at a better club than yours anyway :p haha

Only watched 3 quaters and mainly focused on Metro but could somebody tell me the names of #2, #3 & #17 for Metro, thought they showed alot of class!

Oh- by the way, crap game!

2 was Daniel Hayes from Eastern.
3 was Myles Krakouer, potential Roos Father/Son.
17 was Brad Kelleher from Eastern.

Bachar Houli is a certainty, lock him in. Fraser ,Tyler or Hansen will play CHF for Vic Country at various times. It was also my first decent look at Joel Selwood, what can you say? pure class, let's hope he tries for an exemption because if he was in the draft pool he would be top 5 easily.

I play school football with him and yeah its unbelievable just how much ground he covers in a game and yeah deserves to reap the benefits if he can break away for a so called 'easy' mark.

Any news on how Dean Kelly played?

Anyone have an injury update on Murphy?, Metro have already lost Hocking, if Murphy is missing aswell they're gone! I didn't see much of the first game, did White and Bowes get a run for Metro?

The AFL isnt taking any exemptions this year, last year was the last time

Easy big fella. Not having a go at your man just stating facts. Yes he worked hard to run from CHF to the wing where he took uncontested marks when ever he felt the need but you will agree his lazy opponent was 30 metres back. His kicking was also good with little pressure being applied.

I did note that alittle later when Jake Johnson had a run on him and they were both going for marks in a contested situations, none stuck. His 10-12 uncontested marks were solid though.

Perhaps Rees is more suited to Hawthorns game plan where they play kick to kick for 120 minutes :D

Are you serious? ********! They got Jesse last year and by the looks of things they're gonna pick up another talent in the FS rule!

Damn, i really like the way this kid played today!

Who were the standout out players from Vic Country Under 16 and 18 teams, how did the Geelong Falcons boys go?

Have you got some contested marks stats for AFL centre half forwards handy? We'll see tomorrow Chris Tarrant and Brad Miller who get so much of the ball leading out to the wing taking the types of marks Rees Thomas took today. Not all centre half forwards play like Whitnall - it is ok to be athletic.

I don't admire how Hawthorn are playing, don't wind me up. It's rubbish. I find it hard to believe there could be a side below them on the ladder really.
