The simple answer is allegedly he’s the best we’ve got and the next man in Lemire is nowhere near as good with the stick allegedly
I remain perplexed the Vics havent at least tried to bring someone in from interstate if local stocks are so light.

He’d want to be a real good bat if he can’t keep to a high standardI think Blackford is probably next in line but isn't as good a keeper as Lemire or Harper.
Who? Queensland have Peirson and that's it. NSW had Inglis and Philippe, who left to NSW because he had no real competition, Tassie have Doran then Jewell who isn't great, SA have Neilsen as the back up to Carey but whilst Carey is the #1 for test cricket why would he leave and NSW had Holt and Gilkes, neither of whom are better at either facet.I remain perplexed the Vics havent at least tried to bring someone in from interstate if local stocks are so light.
I've only seen him a couple of times but his batting looks good. He’d want to be a real good bat if he can’t keep to a high standard
We could bring in virtually an entire batting lineup - but as we’ve posted in another thread - no one is producing what i would term “quality” bats - there are oodles of “talented” ones but none with the old school G&D - you can argue why foreverI remain perplexed the Vics havent at least tried to bring someone in from interstate if local stocks are so light.
Flogged by 140 runs - non competitive after 10 oversHopefully we have Short and Maxi for the One Dayer. If we do:
Brown
Short
Harris
Handscomb
Rogers
Maxwell
Harper (+)
Sutherland
Elliott
O'Neill
Murphy
We lost control of the bowling very early on. Too many panic changes, some poor fields and it cost us. Yeah, the batting sucked as well but the game was over.Flogged by 140 runs - non competitive after 10 overs
When do we start asking some hard questions
Sutherland as Captain is a concernWe lost control of the bowling very early on. Too many panic changes, some poor fields and it cost us. Yeah, the batting sucked as well but the game was over.
Still, not prepared to throw the baby out with the bathwater in this format based on one bad game. Let's see the response against WA (who will be fighting for their season in this format) on the 13th.
I think he's a good leader and has shown good tactical nous at times but when he gets it wrong he gets it very very wrong. I'm wondering if there were too many voices today too. Normally it's just Pete, today it was Pete and Maxi and Sid to an extent too.Sutherland as Captain is a concern
That’s it - no oneWho realistically would you even consider from interstate as a batsmen to bring over? Struggling around Australia as it is
What you have described are not hallmarks of good captaincy - he’s definitely not Cameron WhiteI think he's a good leader and has shown good tactical nous at times but when he gets it wrong he gets it very very wrong. It didn't help that O'Neill had his worst game ever and Murphy went at 7's when he usually goes 4's. Elliott suffered the most having two three over spells, a two over spell and a one over spell. There just seemed to be a lot of panic.
Not many are. White is quite simply the best captain I've seen since following domestic cricket. Hopes, Whiteman, Bailey are others that were/are very good but if the pass mark is White level then most will fail. What you have described are not hallmarks of good captaincy - he’s definitely not Cameron White
Captains are born not made - you either have it or you don’t…there’s no in betweenNot many are. White is quite simply the best captain I've seen since following domestic cricket. Hopes, Whiteman, Bailey are others that were/are very good but if the pass mark is White level then most will fail.
I see someone like Wade or Henriques as a pass mark. Good captains, not at the level of the above but solid enough. Sutherland I think can get there. But he needs to focus on bowling.
In certain aspects, sure.Captains are born not made - you either have it or you don’t…there’s no in between
Harry Dixon,a great chance to see how this young boy goes in the shield. No Short/Maxi cos ODI side. O'Neill, Harris, Boland, Murphy all named for Aus A but potentially some might get released back to us. Worst case scenario side: Chandrasinghe, Kellaway, Handscomb, Rogers, Harper, Sutherland, Elliott, Maclure, Perry, Siddle I imagine is the 10... with Merlo I guess the extra batter. Anyone else a chance?
Brasher made 160 on the weekendBrasher
Merlo
Kellaway
Handscomb
Rogers
Harper
Sutherland
Perry
Elliott
Warren
McClure
If Maxi and Short were available I'd have Elliott rested and Brasher out with Short opening and Maxi at 6. I suspect Chandrasinghe is in instead of Brasher though
I think they were gonna pick Merlo ahead of himBrasher made 160 on the weekend
The cupboard is bare in all states, Australia is running dry of talent that can kick on.I remain perplexed the Vics havent at least tried to bring someone in from interstate if local stocks are so light.
Merlo got a ton in the 2nd innings in the recently completed 2nd 11 game.Has had chances in the shield side in the past and not secured his spot.I think they were gonna pick Merlo ahead of him
