Ah someone has been paying attention

If most of you notice, most collingwood and essendon supporters see these big 4 talks as a dick pulling competition

A few more years like 2005-08 and Essendon might be polishing their Big 4 membership badges.

We all know that those 4 clubs have the most barrackers in this town.
Who is disputing that?

Other Top 4s of the modern era (last 20 years)

On Field Success
Hawthorn
Essendon
North
Geelong

Memberships (= loyalty)
Pies
Hawks
Essendon
Carlton

Off Field $$$
Hawks
Essendon
Colliingwood
Geelong

Pfffttttt.
Where was the loyalty when the hawks were struggling on the bottom of the ladder. You couldn't give away membership tickets then.
Have you also forgotten about Ian Dickers famous end of season garage sales and auctions? Plus the countless amount of cash he donated to the club so the club could post a $10,000 profit each year?

Either you have a very short memory or your a 10 year old who just started supporting the club around September last year

What a load of shit.

You ever been to a 12.30 shut out at Princes Park,
Victoria Park, Windy Hill?

This is why they created MCG 'blockbusters' or they shifted them to VFL Park.

We made this game, like the other lot.

Round 1, Richmond vs Carlton, 2009 MCG = Sold Out.
Facts are there are only 4 Victorian teams who can continuously sell out an AFL game at the MCG during the home and away season and they are Carlton, Richmond, Collingwood and Essendon.
Facts are the BIG 4 always existed and will always exists while others trying to be will never be!

Hopefully this will put an end to all the tripe on bigfooty, but I still doubt it.:D
Please.

The two teams are on the way up, but the only reasons it is a sell out is a) it's the first match of the season and b) it is the first time the footballing public will see the two ex WC Eagles captains go head to head (for different squads) since they both left.

Richmond's and CFC's relative weak finishes over the last few years and the fact they are both on the way up (supposedly), would account for a large crowd not a near sell out.

It's the extra factors which have all freakishly come together and amplified the hype, but seriously with Cousins or Judd (or both out for this game) and the game not being held in round 1, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Maybe that will change if both teams have some consistent success and actually seem to be vying for position, but at the moment it's hype, hope and curiosity.

I think that what everyone should be thinking is not how they can badmouth and belittle Richmond but rather how good it will be if Richmond actually fire up and get the Tiger Train rolling just as recession threatens to reduce attendances across the board. Richmond going well are a huge draw. There may well be 50,000 tigers at the game. Quite probably there has never been a one club 50,000 turnout to an opener. Essendon could do i in the right circumstances. Collingwood could do it. Carlton at a huge push could just about do it but Richmond can do it and we are doing it. That is hugely welcome.

All the years of crap have obscured the reality that the Tiger army out and about is great for the game, great for colour and excitement, gives everyone a game to look forward to and is all round to be welcomed. Naturally Hawks will be annoyed that their game is overshadowed and I frankly understand that and would feel the same but really everyone shoudl look at what the Tigers on the go will mean.....great for the game and someone other than Collingwood for everyone to dislike.

Got about 70k last year I think.(only because of Judd)
Prob get about 90 this year.
The extra 20 has nothing to do with either club and is all about Ben Cousins.

Might want to check your facts mate.
When we were struggling and generally in bottom 8 with you guys in our Waverley days our membership was extraordinarily high. Remember the proud passionate and paid up campaign? We cracked 30k a few times back then and a few times since. You did it for 1st time last year. Pathetic.

I think the only supporters who care about the 'big 4' bullshit and even membership numbers are Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Hawthorn.

Have to agree. When Collingwood are winning and making finals NO CLUB comes close to collingwoods drawing power and supporter base numbers! that is FACT!

We have attendance stats from 1921. Richmond played in Punt Road until 1964.

44 seasons.

Collingwood finalled 29 times are outdrew Richmond at home 20 times.

When Richmond are winning and making finals no club comes close. Your assertion is an assumption based on not knowing the historical facts. Mine is an assertion of fact based on knowing them.

This assertion will be rubbished but being true will not be disproved.

There's only one Collingwood.

Stop kidding yourselves.

Sure, the next tier of teams can occasionally sell out games when up against one another, but Collingwood are the only team that can do it consistently against pretty much any Victorian team.

The other 3 in the so-called 'big 4' need each other. Collingwood don't.

Finally some sense.

There is a "Big 1", perhaps 2. Essendon are loaded to the eyeballs as well and incredibly well run.

Carlton looked like shitting itself not long ago and Richmond took months and months to sign a major sponsor.

Despite the hotel disaster Collingwood are chockers, have lucrative sponsorship, consistently over 35K members and just about every team asks the AFL for a home game against them.

They are the bench mark, no matter how ordinary the team is the fans sign up, and turn up.

It really is Collingwood, then the rest.

In fairness PHX that is our own fault. We have stunk so long onfield that our drawing power has been muted and the Geelongs of this world haven't seen us as a meal ticket. If we go well this year we will draw hugely as the response to R1 indicates and you can bet your bottom dollar we won't be seeing Kardinia again in a hurry.

Indeed privately the Geelong FC will be kicking themselves that they have missed out on a blockbuster but that is their problem.[/quote]

Why?
Do you know how much Geelong makes out of a home game with not much above 20,000?
And what the breakeven crowd to match that figure would be at the 'G' if the game were to be moved? Probably 80k+.
Now you can argue that it'd be good for the Cats to play in front of big crowds at the 'G' for that finals like experience for the players but hey, we've actually been doing that in September when it counts for a number of years, what have your rabble been doing?

To answer your question our team have been consistently failing........you'll know when we stop failing and start finalling because your little club will be crying to play us at the G.

Yeah, good answer, NOT. Piss poor.

And in answer to the highlighted bit, not if it was your home game, there'd be nothing in it for Geelong.

Crowds are good, but it's not the be all and end all these days, it's revenue and stadium deals, why do you think nearly every Victorian club is crying poor about the dome and G.

S.A. and W.A. clubs too with their deals.

We're doing very nicely and thanks for asking.

If we needed to move home games to the MCG there's only 2 clubs I'd do it with atm and that's Collingwood and Essendon. Everyone else is too risky and likely to either cost us money or make the return that poor that it wouldn't be worth alienating/inconveniencing sponsors and membership holders.

In 1980 I went to a H&A game at the G between Geelong and Richmond with around the 80k mark (I think it was almost to decide top spot on the ladder). I'll let you in on a little secret. Your team 'aint the 1980 version. 'Disco' Roach isn't taking hangers and kicking a ton of goals and radios' worst sports broadcaster, 'Hungry', isn't running around flicking his 'George and Mildred' comb across back into place anymore.

Times change, get over yourself/ves.
