It seems there is a very good chance that 2013 will see the introduction of 2 Byes per team - with up to 6 Bye rounds of reduced matches (6 matches).

This might seem to present a quandary as to how to handle for SuperCoach/ Dreamteam.

I have a simple solution. Modify the Finals to 3 weeks - Knockout - and you can have a simple solution.

This means starting in Round 1 with league matches (In an 18 team league).

Rounds 1 - 21.

17 League Matches

First 3 Bye Rounds - Combine into first "Super Round"
Second 3 Bye Rounds - Combine into second "Super Round"
(In theory each of your players should play twice across these 2 lots of Bye Rounds).

That takes care of 6 Bye rounds as 2 League matches. Other 15 Rounds = Normal League play. So you have 17 Rounds for all concerned.

Total of 17 Matches over 21 Rounds.

Finals is a straight knock-out.

Round 22 (1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5 - Semi-Final Week)
Round 23 (4 Winners Play Off - Preliminary Final Week)
Round 24 (Grand Final)

Yes, it is not the same system as used in the AFL - but so what - the Supercoach/ Dreamteam finals do not run in parallel to the AFL finals anyway so they shouldn't have to be the same?

Seems the easiest solution I can come up with to a potential 6 Bye Rounds in 2013 onwards.

What do you think?

Any other "solutions"???

Rookie list of 4 subs who only play bye rounds, are not in the main cap and dont add or lose value. from main value

There would be a cap on the 4 rookies. can be traded into the main team in the usual way

How about the AFL just do a ****ing 5-4 split round twice with a partial lockout. Kents. Yes I know I didnt really offer a solution. Or give two teams a bye each week over 18 rounds (rounds 3-20) and let us have 3 bench players in mids, defence, and forward again. Yes I know I offered no constructive solution and the AFL does not have SC and DTers in mind when generating a fixture.

For all the bye haters out there, here's my 2c worth. I've only really been following the afl seriously for 2 years, and it was supercoach that really ignited my interest in the game. Now I have totally given up on Rugby league and follow the AFL religiously.

Anyway, for SC next year, here's how to avoid head to head matches in the bye rounds. I'm making the following assumptions.
1. There will be 24 rounds.
2. There will be 6 bye rounds
3. Assume those bye rounds are rounds 7-9 and 15-17.

Head to head matches commence in the first round, and rounds 1-5 will be head to head. Round 6 will be the first of 3 double headers. That means, you play against two teams on the same weekend, both worth the normal 4 points for the win. No league matches rounds 7-9, head to head 10-13, double header round 14, no league matches 15-17, head to head 18 and 19 then a double header to finish in round 20 the week before finals start.

There you have the 17 matches required to play everyone in the league, and there are no league matches in the bye rounds.

I will be the first to accept that the software required to play 2 head to head matches in one week may make this impracticle, but it's worth discussing at least.

The double headers make for some intrigue, especially with the last one happening the week before finals commence.

Like I said, just my 2c worth.

6 byes = Rope and a tree to hang it from!

Originally I hated the byes but it does make things really interesting on reflection. It will be interesting to see how they structure things next year, im looking forward to it.
Sure they would do 4 bye rounds.

back to 33 players with roughly the same magic number as last year and and be able to bring in an extra 3 players during the bye rounds

but that would of course be "to easy" and we cant have that

One simple way could be to change current playing structure to DEF 7/3, MID, 7/3, FWD 7/3, RUC 1/1 (32 players).

22 trades (maybe 24 to make it easier)

Stay with 18 teams per league, 17 rounds + 4 final rounds. League games start Round 4/Week 4 & Bye 1 Weeks are 7, 8 & 9

One possible team strategy for either DEF, MID or FWD line (RUC straight forward);

Bye 1 Week 7 - 3 players with B1W7 on bench, 3 players with B1W8 on field, 4 players with B1W9 on field.
Bye 1 Week 8 - 3 players with B1W7 on field, 3 players with B1W8 on bench, 4 players with B1W9 on field. (no forced trades)
Bye 1 Week 9 - 4 players with B1W7 on field, 3 players with B1W8 on field, 3 players with B1W9 on bench. (1 forced trade)

Which means you would be trying to achieve a similar player bye structure during Bye 2 to minimize trades.

Maybe they could create a Supercoach Jr for the kids that gives 40 players or something like that? First prize could be a cup of concrete.
