WA 2009 U18 Championship Squad

Brad Sheppard's probably in the next class in that he's not quite as noticable, but he's strong athketically, has good skills and has discipline. I'd be looking at him somewhere in the top 25.

He's an interesting one. He has been playing really good footy in the WAFL - much better than Lucas. So I'm expecting him to go higher than a lot of people think - this year's bolter.

There is always a few from outside who get picked up. Whether it is because they missed out on selection due to injury or they step up in the colts while the team leaders are away and they hold their from when they come back.

A guy like Michael Cooper who was great in the U16's two years ago but wasn't selected in the U18's because he was injured for the 18 months after that will go close.

I also highly rate Travis Colyer, his speed and his consistency at claremont is a major plus for him. think he would be a good pick up from picks 30-50

Does anyone think anyone from outside the WA 18s squad can get drafted from WA?

I expect Daly from Swans to be looked at closely. 8 goals against Souths 2 weeks ago was a pretty fair performance and he's done a heap of work over the summer on his endurance. I rate Bonnet and Pullman as key defenders, who are in the squad but not playing games. Bairstow has been given enough exposure to be picked up, if he is good enough.

Cooper's an interesting one Sico, heard enough about him but never seen him play.

Ricciardello from Souths would have to be a chance, kicking a bag nearly every week and is the leading goal kicker for the competition.
Also there is players who were unlucky not to be in the State 18's either due to injury or just plain oversight who might have a chance come November.

Disagree. Hes a well rounded medium defender, will go 25-40.

If he's there for our second pick, I would have no trouble in taking him over a KPP. Because he definitely looks like he can move into the midfield within a short space of time. Covers a lot of ground, and is a very fast, smart and damaging player.

I know he is doing okay in the WAFL, but he just seems to have a bit of a vanilla quality about him; there isn't anything that stands out to get the recruiters excited. For example Brock O'Brien and Clancee Pearce were similar well rounded players in their years, and look where they went.

Fair enough.

But I see him as a faster, fitter, more aggressive version of Mundy, who is likely to be a very good midfielder in the future, with little risk. Pearce and BOB have always had, and will always have question marks about their ability up the ground, and the suitability of their size in AFL. There isn't that risk with Sheppard, just IMO.

Morabito is probably the most ready made midfielder of the draft. Big, strong and breaks tackles non-stop. Check out some of his WAFL games on youtube.

Ready-made KPP are non-existant at their age and I havent seen enough of Scully/Trengrove to comment on those two.

Would you guys be interested in adding him to Pearce and Broughton though?

ricciardello would be more of a rookie type chance, if any, still think its pretty slim for a full forward playing colts with a late birthday to get drafted. fasolo is his age and playing league at a reasonable standard, i would think his prospects are much higher. michael cooper from east perth is a good chance, dominated in 16s and below wafl carnivals and performed well at the 16s carnival. mitch carter is a much better chance from south than ricciardello, athletic midfielder/backman who was good in the 16s carnival but an untimely injury severely hurt his 18s aspirations this year. another few boys from claremont like davies, holt and foley (son of dan) would have to be the next best lot from the wafl colts competition.

I have seen Ricciardello play and is an all rounder, can play anywhere on ground and is consistent week in, week out. Saw him play in the State 18's intra game last year and was very unlucky not to make the squad, dominated on a wing playing on Stephen Hill. To play up forward and be leading goal kicker for the comp this year after playing 2 years as CHB is an outstanding effort, which club wouldn't want a goal kicker who can play either end of the ground.Could be a forward West Coast could use, I hope West Coast take him as a late pick or even as a rookie, some of the best players ever have started off as rookies. As for Mitch Carter, definitely has talent but is too hot and cold, has some great games but then has some very poor games. I think that consistency is the key, if I was a recruiter I would be looking for players that are solid every week, not outstanding in some and poor in others.

Scully would be playing AFL now if available.

Easily the ready made man of this draft.

Will go to Melbourne, and just about be their no.1 midfielder from day 1.

Thats probably a very bad thing.

i know riciardellos a good, versatile player ive seen a lot of him. he didnt play well enough early in the year last year to make the 18s squad. i watched the game youre talking about at fremantle oval, and hill got about 40 touches playing as a bit of a free roamer. im just making the point that the odds are against him, with not that many late birthday colts players getting drafted, especially those without 18s or league experience. he is not doing himself any harm by dominating the way he is, but an overage key position forward from colts getting drafted? unlikely. i would think a houghton, daly or foster are much, much more likely to go before him. but a strong finish to the year and hopefully good performances in the finals for south could see one of the afl clubs hopefully take some initiative and give him a crack. :) black is a similar sort of player and is a bit bigger aswell. both very very good players who if they dont get a crack will hopefully have a good league footy career.

I would think that black would be a near on certantity. Is awesome over head, Fairly good kick, unselfish, lays big tackles and could also be a good ruckman. The way Peel league are going, I doubt it will be long before he is playing with them.

Iam a big fan of Aaron Black lovely size on him.

He takes marks at it highest point which is a huge plus for a key foward.

Xavier Foley from Claremont is another good kp, have seen him a fair bit and has something to offer.

Swannies I watched swan colts the other day and liked there CHF who would that be ? he took a couple of good marks and played on straight away.

another note for aaron black, kicked ten and was bog in last years country colts final for south west against regional districts. pretty good looking resume at the moment!

when i watched swans for a game earlier in the year, adam mckinlay played very well for them at chf. if its the same guy, really talented player, from memory hes also a late 1990 birthday. would hope some of these guys get a bit of exposure to senior footy later in the year to see how they shape up. im assuming this is who youre talking about hes regularly kicked goals this year and been in the best aswell.

there are another couple of people i think are worth a mention. anthony del borello was added to the 18s squad and then did his shoulder about a week later. hes listed but wont play any games and is out for the season. i do know he was attracting considerable interest from port adelaide and one or two other clubs before he got injured.

there are a few names that i keep seeing week in week out in the best for the colts sides but arent in the chop up for the academy, some that come to mind are foley from claremont, a kpp who was apparently too small to play in those spots in the carnival. davies, a hard running mid/defender from claremont who has played very good footy while his higher ranked counterparts have been away on state duties, also played state 16s.

parry and wyatt from south fremantle seem to be in the best nearly every week and have seen both of them play once or twice this year, hard running slick mids who have really helped souths early dominance this year. i think wyatt has been playing off a half back flank recently and doing very well. leeson from perth also kicked 7 on the weekend and tore the game open apparently, anyone know much about him?

someone who im a big fan of is mcallister from claremont, been very good at colts level nullifying forwards like daly and houghton but hasnt had the opportunity at state level to do so. very good hard defender who i would like to see do well. of course with a few of the names of the boys in the 18s ive only seen them a few times each im just going on the reports each week and who i notice, so feel free to tell me if these boys are no where near up to it.
