Then you can't simply rely on the criminal system to provide any level of accountability, let alone set your moral compass right.

They are fighting on multiple fronts.

Germany's defeat at the hands of a far less technologically advanced army in Russia proves that you don't overcommit troops when multiple fronts are open or potentially opening up.
