Im generally against playing the kids for the sake of it but how are we supposed to develop depth and flexibility if we don't at least give these guys a shot. They generally play better when they have better players around them so WAFL is not always a good indicator (and the fact that EP is a dysfunctional mess atm)
Exactly. Freo threw some players in as a last resort and they gelled really well. It's only one game but still shows it can work.

Or Rioli. Or Watson we might have picked a gem out of the rookie draft. People are jumping the gun.
Which is why I also discussed 2011-2015. It is in the numbers.

Hutchings the only player from 2011-13 to play 50 games. That whole contingent as a group averaged just 10 combined games over the last 5 seasons. Not per draftee, the whole group. We already have over a third of players from those drafts no longer at WC. Two are looking like producing no best 22 players. None from 5 drafts have cemented a best 22 spot. Only three played in todays game.

Lets give Francis Watson a go. As soon as venables is fit we give him a go to. If we lose games then so what!

Probably a bit to early for my liking , but if he has another handful of games like his last couple I would not be against the move if we had a player who genuinely needed to be dropped back.

Watson is the exception at the moment as his game seems to be developing at East Perth.

Venables looks like a player but he is a way off being ready yet.

Wow, happy with defenders then?
Well Cole duggan, goiter, watson, schofield,McKenzie, butler can all be brought in if changes need to be made.
None of them are a speedy mid or a good inside mid who can rack up possessions
I guess we have a few developing forwards in Allen, waterman and lamb but none of the are a replacement for Kennedy in a few years or an immediate chf which we really lack now

If Watson can just clean up his disposal then he should be given a chance this year.

Agree Champs.
But thus far he is tracking better than I had expected and he is ahead of where I thought he would be and by some margin.

Yet he was dropped from the side?

As I said though, he is the only one along with Barrass who looks like he could hold down a spot.
Too give Jetta a go who failed again. He lost out to Hutchings and Redden who have been good so far this year. Given Freo played Grey and he did well after being delisted and redrafted I think we should be reserving our judgement.

Neither Hutchings, nor Redden have been particularly good. They have done just enough to be in the side.

Only Wellingham has had a whole season of good output. Yeo looks to be replacing Wellingham as a B minus good to above average player.
cripps , hill and Yeo have all been better recruits and had better consistency than wellingham who had 1 good season going into his 5th year with wce .

As for our drafting . We have hardly had any high picks . Sheed and duggo at 11 . We gave up 17 for redden ( that ended up in the 20's )

We don't have the luxury of academies to get access to top picks. Have not had any gun father sons .

I feel it's not our drafting but development that is the problem .

Saying that our use of the rookie draft has been shit . Lucas , gorter , Tunbridge and collage FFS . We need to cut the fat

By the sounds of this board we're going to need a complete rebuild because we lost one game.

**** me.
Yep, lost one game, in Melbourne against a decent side......

We have performed worse in terms of games from players, than every team with similar draft position. Adelaides selections over a similar period are heads and shoulders above in terms of output.

Even Hawthorn who had the worst draft position and traded away good picks has a higher number of games from their players. There is an argument that WC have been the worst performed club at the trade and draft table during that period. I mean at least Carlton drafted Cripps.

Yeah maybe, but the selectors never give these players a chance. Only the well known players are given a chance the last few years

Well he was injured in the preseason and came in underdone last week because he was the only realistic option to replace Jetta as Duggan is also building match fitness after being laid off a few weeks in the preseason. Of course Sheed was dropped as he contributed nothing in the St Kilda game as he wasn't 100% match fit.

There is no good stumbling toward 7th or 8th this year and not having blooded youth. As we drop games over the next 2 months I'd like to see us give opportunities to guys like Duggan, Mutimer and Cole, and then to Venables and even Watson/Rotham/Rioli toward the end of the season. If things are really going **** up and we're out of the finals race, give Partington a crack.

Wellingham, Redden, Cripps, Jetta, Hutchings, Masten and Hill are probably the group of players most at risk of losing their spots to younger players soon.

2011 and 2012 drafts were badly distorted by GWS and Gold Coast draft concessions so it's not that surprising that given our 2011 first pic was sent to jail (Murray Newman) and was pick 23 we didn't get any good players that year. 2012 we didn't get a pick till round 3. So 2 of those years were compromised drafts. 2013 we got Gov, Sheed, Barrass and Karpany 3 out of those 4 are best 25 and Karpany is the one most at risk of being delisted. 2014 onwards it's pretty early to be writing them off. There has been like with Cavka and Waterman some unlucky injuries that stopped their careers just with bad luck. Not to mention Tunbridge with an ankle injury and a knee reco. I think the recruitment team has done OK. We are hardly a basket case I just think we need to withhold judgement.

I made this for another thread but it applies here as well, the numbers on how each team has drafted from the 2011 draft onward:
Drafted since 2011.JPG

Our drafting and development has in fact been deplorable since 2011 in my opinion.

And 2011 was actually a very deep draft.
25 - Seb Ross
30 - Yeo
32 - Hamling
31 - Merrett
33 - Brad Hill
34 - Kersten
37 - Newnes
41 - Grigg
42 - Webster
44 - Rowe
48 - Murdoch
57- Dickson
58 - Neale
67 - Witts

Rookie Draft:
Laird
Spurr
Jong
Biggs
Bell
Campbell
Marley Williams
Crisp
Baguley
Blicavs
Gibson
Cunningham

There were some very good players available, we just didn't pick any of them.
