With pick 49 I select : Harry Charleson

SNAPSHOT: “A prolific rebound defender who sets up the play with precise kicking, and his blend of speed and endurance running.” – Michael Alvaro

Harry Charleson is hoping to follow in the footsteps of elder brother Lachie (Port Adelaide, 2023 pick 52) to the big leagues. Playing at the opposite end of the ground to his livewire sibling, Harry is a rebound defender who racks up the ball and uses it well by foot. He even had spurts in the midfield for Greater Western Victoria (GWV) this season, en route to the region’s first Coates Talent League Grand Final in 27 years.

The East Point junior made his senior debut for the club in 2023 amid what was a terrific bottom-age season with the Rebels. Charleson made 13 appearances in the CTL, averaging 15.7 disposals and 3.6 rebound 50s per game. His form saw him earn selection in the Vic Country Under 17 side which took on Queensland in August, helping snatch a win after the siren. Such feats set him up to hit new heights in his top-age campaign.

Charleson continued to be a mainstay for the Rebels, lifting his output to an average 21.4 disposals across 16 games and tying with Ollie Hannaford for the club’s best and fairest. He had to fight his way into the Vic Country Under 18 squad though, trialling successfully and playing out a full national carnival for the Big V. There, he was named in the bests for the first two games, against South and Western Australia.

I have just got 3 steals in a row.
Damn, Charleson was on my list. But I was tossing between him and another, so you made my job easy in that respect.

Pick 50 - Jaxon Artemis (South Freo)

Dashing half back who won the WA MVP for the carnival, his a real metres gain type guy with lots of run and carry and great ball use. Another I loved watching at the carnival, and Collingwood are going all WA so far.

eaglespremiers you are up.

Whilst we wait for eaglespremiers to take his pick, PremiershipNo4 has advised via PM that in true BODE fashion, Geelong wants to place a bid on Malakai Champion with pick 52

We_The_West you are able to match that bid with pick 67 if you choose

With pick 51 GWS select Archer-Day Wicks.

Now if you think you're seeing a pattern to my selections you are clearly and utterly delusional.
I've selected a key forward, a bid-bodied mid, a tall intercepting defender and now a utility. There is no conspiracy here.
Archer Day-Wicks-1.jpg Archer Day-Wicks-6.jpg
Day-Wicks was an enigma this year with his form fluctuated over the season. He had some big games and then some quiet games. He almost won Vic Country the Championships but went missing against SA.

Archer has flair backing himself at every opportunity and relies on his upper-body strength and turn of pace to regular beat his opponent. This makes him a tremendous forward to leave one-out in the forward 50, although Archer should be mindful not to get tunnel vision around the goals and needs to watch his field kicking.

As a comparative player, I can see comparisons to Will Hayward as a dynamic mid-sized forward with a good goal sense, although Archer has the tank to play further up the ground more often.

I was intending to write a more comprehensive report but it's been an exhausting day at work so this is all I've got.

Geelong being the campaigners they are have put a bid in for Malakai Champion, do WC want to match it that is the question?

He is a good pick. I was considering Day-Wicks 6 spots earlier for the forward role with the Doggies but went Dolan as I wanted smaller and faster.

Interesting how this draft feels a lot easier and more tempting to list manage based on needs and out the window goes the "best available" pick as there are places where the options are so even.

West Coast needed 49 points to match the bid at pick 52 for Champion. Pick 67 is worth 69 points which leaves a surplus of 20 points equivalent to pick 72.

So things keep moving PremiershipNo4 has previously advised me of his preferred selection for Geelong so I’m going to preemptively state that at pick 53 Geelong select Will Hayes

Hook461123 you’re up

PICK 52: MALAKAI CHAMPION
1731350448446.png

West Coast bring in their highly rated NGA prospect Malakai Champion with pick 52.

Champion has had an up and down year, with early 2024 predictions having him rated as a possible top 10 selection - coming off an U16 All Australian campaign and glimpses throughout the 2023 carnival as a bottom ager.

STRENGTHS:

  • Defensive pressure
  • Goal sense
  • Smarts
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Speed
  • X-Factor

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Composure
  • Endurance
  • Size

"Whether it’s threatening to leap and take mark of the year, threading goal of the year from an absurd angle, weaving in and out of traffic, or burning opponents with his raw pace, Champion lays claim to many tools to become an elite small forward at the next level."

"He is as exciting as any prospect in the draft, possessing eye-catching speed that he uses to get up and down the ground or storm into space. Champion displayed the ability to explode from contests, take a bounce and drive his side inside 50 when he regularly spent time through the midfield for Subiaco in the latter stages of the WAFL Colts season."

With pick 51 GWS select Archer-Day Wicks.

Was paying a $1.01 for you to take him.

I had him equal next on my list.

Pick 55. Rhys Unwin (GWV Rebels)

Had seen him through the screen a few times, and thought he's a clever half forward who would have high score involvements. But it was when I saw him live at RSEA park, that he really wow'd me. Hannaford kicked 5 that day, but a large part of those goals came from the X-factor of Unwin who kicked 0.5 that day, perhaps if he'd kicked the 5 goals we'd be talking about him more... He was playing half forward and pinch hitting in the midfield and everything he did was class. Unwin, Lalor and Jagga Smith were the three I walked away thinking wow, they're very very good players.

Lalor later got injured and Unwin stepped up into a midfield rotation player and really made an impact late in the season there. Taking his game from 13-14 disposals to 21-22 a game! Unwins rarely wastes a disposal, so 21 for him would have high impact.
Whilst the rebels got smashed in the Coates league grand final, Unwins performance was the one highlight for the rebels on the day. 19 disposals, 11 clearances, 6 inside 50s.

To cap it off, he has elite speed and agility. 2.88 sec sprint and 8.012 sec agility testing.

If he's going this late in the draft, someone has got themselves a Noah Long.
