Pick 66. Gold Coast -Phoenix Hargrave - 181cm - Midfielder - South Adelaide.

Hard arsed, touch as nails, competitive beast that revels at the coal face.
Very dangerous also in the forward 50.

Doesn't get the love he deserves in the drafting fraternity on Big Footy.

Great pick. He was on my shortlist. Had a very good under age season but perhaps didn’t have the year he wanted this year but definitely has AFL traits.

And I don't understand why, as he is a footballers footballer.

Some Club will get a beauty when he gets picked up.

Whats his greatest strength ......... he plays football very well ........ WWF else does he need to do ?

Would absolutely love it if West Coast drafted him, I have been tracking him closely for two years he will make it at AFL.

Pick 68

Adelaide Crows select: Tyler Welsh

A power forward with vice like hands Welsh was once considered a top 20 prospect on some draft boards. Boasting fast acceleration for a big man, Welsh is a handful off the mark and a difficult match up being too strong one on one for mid sized defenders whilst being able to put separation on bigger opponents.

Averaging two goals a game at the champs this year, Welsh also put Vic Country to the sword last year with 5 majors. A fait accompli to be wearing Crows colours next year, Welsh will need to work on his tank to gain a berth in the Crows forward line as they wrap up their participation in the national draft but will retain a pick in the rookie draft.

PremiershipNo4 who is this year’s Lawson Humphries?

Eaglevision how astute of you to ask😀.
We at the Geelong football club have long and bitter memories of losing the 92 and 94 GF’s to a virtual Western Australian state team and will never give up on our quest to **** WC over from now until the end of the world.
Given that this is case, with the view to trading this player back to WC in 3 years time for 2 1st round draft picks, Geelong selects……………….Isiah Winder.
Over to you Monocle

Pick 70. Gold Coast - Sam Toner - 186cm - Forward - Dandenong Stingrays.

This years smokie, someone is going to take this kid.

He is a over ager ( 19 ), that started the year kicking bags of goals with his mates in the local league for Narre Warren, ( kicked 50 goals ), then got an invite to play with the Stingrays in the CTL, mid season.
He only got to play four games before he broke his wrist, which ended his season.

However in those three game ( broke the wrist early in the fourth game - so I am not counting that ), he managed 10 goals, five of which he scored in his second game.

He is quick, he applies great forward pressure, has a great leap and obviously hits the scoreboard, the big bonus is that he chases and ventures higher up the ground and creates turnovers.

In an era where value is placed on defensive pressure acts, from your forwards, he will be getting looked at closely.

Yes, sure the body of work is very small to evaluate, but his game day impact is just too compelling to ignore.

Will be a late or rookie pick, but on the very small sample size of game time, bang for buck he has impressed the recruiters.

MIDFIELDER

#7

Cody Anderson

Height: 183cm
Weight:
D.O.B: 30-01-2006
Leagues: AFL U18 Championships, Coates Talent League Boys
  • SNAPSHOT

  • ANALYSIS

  • SUMMARY

STRENGTHS:
  • Competitiveness
  • Defensive pressure
  • Inside game
  • Strength
  • Tackling
  • Work rate
IMPROVEMENTS:
  • Decision making
  • Outside game
  • Skills
Anderson's tackle technique and defensive work rate off the ball is one trait clubs and fans alike will come to admire him for. In the 2024 Coates Talent League Grand Final rematch, Anderson laid several bone-crunching tackles that essentially kept the Ranges in the contest, although they narrowly lost. His ability to provide that defensive layer while also being able to accumulate the footy had a massive influence in the result.
His two-way running in games against the Western Jets and Tasmania early in the season highlighted his efforts off the ball and the defensive requirements to make it to the next level, and to contribute to team success. Good closing speed in regards to defensive pressure was also displayed against the Sydney Academy in round five where he saved a certain goal, despite his side not being in the contest at all.
Anderson's inside game is also another strength of his. Despite a big loss in Round 5 against the Sydney Swans Academy, his centre clearance work was solid and he did his best to make his side competitive, despite being decimated by the absence of a few of his key teammates due to representative games. In the Round 6 game against the Lions Academy, Anderson teamed up well with Josh Smillie and they both provided an imposing presence for the opposition to play against.
Anderson's strength and power was also on display throughout the season and one occasion where it was displayed was against Tasmania in Round 8, where he used his strength to provide numerous fends and powerful bursts. It was on display again a week later against the Bendigo Pioneers, with his physicality in the contest again and busting out of stoppages proving a decisive factor.
Anderson's areas for improvement no doubt revolve around his skills by both hand and foot. While he does accumulate the footy, when it comes to disposing of it, it’s a lot of ‘see ball, get ball,’ meaning that his decision making was often rushed and meant the ball was turned over. This was highlighted in the Vic Metro trial games against Vic Country and the Young Guns – while both games were ones with little on the line besides players staking their claims for being drafted, it certainly gave him good scope for how he can make himself better.
It also highlighted how he needs to develop his outside game more with being able to cover the ground and spread as opposed just to being an inside bull that he’s known to be. These areas showed glimpses of improvement in the Round 6 game against the Brisbane Lions Academy in a narrow win where his kicking was more measured, but also against Tasmania where he also showed some strong work on the outside.

WEST COAST TAKE LOCH MACTAGGART WITH THE FINAL PICK OF THE DRAFT - PICK 72

West Coast take Loch Mactaggart out of the Perth Demons. Having delisted Josh Rotham, Alex Witherden and other small/medium defenders, the Eagles fill another need with their last pick of the draft.

STRENGTHS:

  • Defensive versatility
  • Lockdown ability
  • Rebounding
  • Speed

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Accumulation
  • Second position

"Medium defender whose explosive pace was a standout when representing Western Australia in three matches at the National Championships, where he averaged 18 disposals. Also displayed a competitive and aggressive mindset and showed he could lock down on an opponent. Was his state’s best player against Victoria Country and impressed in testing at the state Draft Combine in Perth with both his agility (8.09 seconds) and running vertical jump (89cm) among the best performances across the state Draft Combine group."

"A tenacious and crafty defender, Mactaggart can intercept and pocket dangerous forwards with such powerful athletic traits. He also utilises his speed on the attack, driving forward with aggressive rebound run and carrying the ball confidently. In combination with other small-medium backs, he not only mops up the spills, but quickly gets the ball moving in transition."

Another Noah Long gun in the making.

Thanks very much Keys for running the mock draft, it was done beautifully. It certainly shows there is some real value to be had late in the draft this year, particularly when players like Cody Angove, Lucca Greggo, Josh Murphy, Xavier Ivisic, Jayden Nguyen and Nat Sulzberger go undrafted, I’d have a closer look at all of them with our 5th/6th rounder.

Really think we should Eastcoasteagle it and take Knobel with a late pick to keep a rookie spot open. Burgiel I think will find his way back onto the list one way or another.

And that’s where we’ll end

Thanks to everyone who took part and it’ll be interesting to line this up with what happens next week. Don’t think the Camporeale family will be sending any Christmas cards to Carbine Chaos after he decided not to match bids in either twin

Was there any players not selected in this mock that people think might get drafted in either the main or rookie draft?

Cody Angove is one name from WA considered a chance to be drafted, perhaps not by West Coast since small forward is probably the deepest part of our list now. Especially if/when Champion is drafted

Carbine Chaos absolutely BBQd the Camporeale boys. I loved it. There were some great hauls for some of the clubs.

Angove was unlucky not to get picked up, I would have taken him or Evan Bradley for the Crows if there was another round. At pick 4 in the rookie draft at the very least.

The others I mentioned above in Lucca Greggo, Josh Murphy, Xavier Ivisic, Jayden Nguyen and Nat Sulzberger would find homes most years.

The 2nd round onwards was pretty exciting and really showed the depth. Some surprising non-matched bids and loved the Knobel take. I was tempted to take Angus Clarke with our first to trigger a melt or two but I honestly think he'll be a gun.
