First time at gmhba today. Didn't realise we needed to buy tickets from ticketmaster for a ******* scratch match but we got there in the end. Nice little stadium tbh. Cats fans taking it wayyyy too seriously. Cheering chest marks, screaming for holding the ball etc. Etc.

Thought we did just okay. Looked like we were definitely going for that zig zag mark, quick short kick option till we find some space more than last year to maximise usage of that shithouse stand rule. Cats seemed to play on with handball more than the last few years. Looked a bit more dangerous going inside 50 overall.

Ralphsmith was the highlight for me. Got plenty of it and looked right at home. Disposal wasn't great but he was a big positive.
Prestia looked great. Sharp and moved really well.
Vlastuin was vlastuin.
Dusty just got through. Left plenty out there.
Aarts average.
Soldo and Nank worked well. Both looked lean and moved as well as weve seen.
Lynch dangerous, moved well, marked well, kicked well.
Jack still looked very zippy to me. Certainly not done yet.
Edwards seemed to play alot more forward. Dangerous combo with Baker.
Bolton brilliant, spent alot of time in the middle.
Gibcus copped a towelling. Spent most ofnthe time on Cameron and was constantly tracking him to the ball. Doesn't look ready.
Miller was average too and Tarrant was shocking. Looked slow and caught in no man's land often.
Chaos King was the typical chaos and sh*te disposal.
Dow pretty good, got amongst it more.
Ross okay but slow.

No injuries. Tick. All in all just okay.

Edit: oh yeah balta was disturbingly average forward
funnily enuff thats exactly how i seen it

Now I know that this is just a practice match lol, but I have an interesting fact below.

Unless there were other undocumented preseason games we’re unaware of, our score of 110 was the 4th-highest score Geelong conceded in 4 quarters at Kardinia Park since 2008 (including preseason games).

The 3 higher scores were:
  • 111 against Brisbane in the 2013 AFL season
  • 113 against Melbourne in 2015 AFL season
  • 131 against Collingwood in a 2016 preseason match

Therefore, our score of 110 was only 3 points away from being the second-highest opposition score against Geelong at KP. It‘s also only the 7th time a team scored above 100 and the 12th time a team scored over 90 points against them there.

So kinda yay even though it doesn’t really mean much and it is not really documented?

Agree, I am still bemused why nank was chosen as captain. He should have been lucky to be vice captain. Hes not our 1st ruck with Soldo in and nank gets smashed by gawn/grundy. Its going to awkward to drop him and its really going to mess with us trying Soldo/balta combo in the ruck because we cant drop nank anymore.
Just watch the 21 finals series too see why Nank was made Captain and will never be dropped in the near future.
Some people have short memories.

We don’t have the luxury to drop Nankervis right now. His contributions around the ground are too valuable IMO. He’s basically the best tall at ground level other than Grimes.

We have a good group of non-KPD talls at the moment in Riewoldt, Lynch, Nankervis, and Soldo.

Also, the Balta forward experiment is not looking very good right now. I’d say it is close to over. Although I originally was a fan of the idea, I’ll concede that he should go back to being a defender. Those that were against it on this board were right IMO.

Round 1:
KPD - Tarrant, Balta, Grimes
KPF - Riewoldt, Lynch
Ruck - Soldo, Nankervis (both resting forward when not rucking)

Gibcus and Miller out of the side and into the VFL for now.

I thought the practice match was encouraging. Loved how much better lynch looked and at least one of the younger brigade will surely come through and cement a position this year (eg. Ralphsmith, Dow, RCD, or even a first year player later in the season hopefully). I’m very excited by prestia. When unencumbered he is a brilliant player, so clever and clean with the ball.

Ross is a bit of a tease. Looks like he has the tools and looks great in moments but just drifts off the pace too much.

There’s something about Will Martyn that impresses me too. Looks like he can play if he finds the right role and has a bit of luck.

As for the gameplan/style questions other posters have summed it up well. It looks like a fusion of chaos in the right moments with slower short kicking build up play. I think it’s not as exciting but that’s what the stand rule has done…netballised/soccerised the game. You can only play the rules as they are I guess.

Whenever you beat a good side like Geelong on their own patch it is a good game. We were 12th last year, they were 3rd.

They kicked poorly but most of their shots at goal were wide to the pockets. Their forwards beat our backs because they were given good service up the field and Hawkins and Cameron are very good players and we played a couple of rookies. Thought Miller was serviceable and Tarrant was better than last week for sure. All our backs will take a bit of time to gel together, Grimes back will help.

A lot of heat on Balta's game. He played deep forward early and got nothing, but looked fine once he got on his bike and led to the ball. As he did last week took some grabs up the ground and helped with transition forward. Our forward line overall functioned much better than last year. 3 key forwards meant that somebody was at least leading up the ground. Not sure what everyone expects of Balta in his first real hit out as a forward but I thought he, Jack and Lynch all played reasonable games.

Shedda is a natural forward, he played his first 100 games there so it is good to see him back there.

Most exciting player for us was Dow (Bolton's last half withstanding). Largely forgotten, but he has real wheels around the ball which is something that is a massive plus for a player that hunts the ball. His first real game as an mid and that will give him a lot of confidence. Not sure there would be many faster inside mids in the game, he also has really sure hands.

Dusty ran the game out really well. His kicking was more powerful at the end of the game than the start which means he is proper fit. He will play mainly as a mid which will will be a massive plus for us. He and Prestia together....

Castanga was good, and I don't say that lightly. Covered heaps of ground and was back marking the ball which he has forgotten how to do. He will always muck up things but his work good work more than evened the ledger.

Hugo was good again, Ross good, the final 22 will be a good mix of old and new which is nice to see.

Beating Geelong… on their home patch … when they had Danger, Selwood, Stewart, Guthrie, Cameron and Hawkins all playing. And we had no Grimes, Cotchin, Lambert or Graham. On the back of 12th v PF last year.

We can nit-pick all we like about style or players out of position etc…. but that is a very promising performance in anyone’s language.

Pretty decent hit out I thought

Prestia was fantastic early and is as important as anyone to our chances this year, a clearance machine

Very good return by Dusty, didn’t see him go forward too often , played mainly mid. Fitness looked excellent.

Shedda looked sharp through the midfield, nobody set’s up teammates with creative hands like he does, like Dion will be huge for our midfield mix

Vlaustin and Short were excellent, gave great rebound from hb, elite kicks (SC player’s get Shorty into your team)

Love Nank drifting forward, is one of the best set shots in the team , has great hands and footy smarts. Could play a role deep forward at times

Kmac was good. Definitely continues as that defensive wingman. But Aarts on the other wing- WTF!! no way we go into the season with that setup, get Pickett onto the other wing

Ralphsmith looks to have improved his contested work is getting involved a lot more and has good run/carry off hb. Kicking is solid and ok in the air. Hope this form translates to the real season, if so will play ones

Bolton- a match winner!! We need 2 of him, one forward, one mid. Played a lot forward yesterday giving Dow and Ross more midfield time.

Dow was good in the clearances , better than Ross although Ross got more of the ball (his kicking has improved) he was dissapointing imo in midfield clearances . Dow put himself in the right spot and won some good clearances, iffy foot skills though.

Nice debut in the VFL part by Brown- classy and composed with ball in hand.
Stacky, couldn’t get into the game, but confident he can still be a player for us this year, not sure he plays R1 though?? see if he plays (and what role) in the 2nd praccy.

How many of Shorty's possessions were kickouts?

And they’ve nit taken it well over in the GO CATTERS board .
Apparently the 6 qtr result was the real result . Or that’s what Chris scott told them …

they’re heading for the wilderness.

-Lynch was a true key forward presence. Is looking like he will have a really big year again. Great signs

-Prestia for the first quarter and half was involved everywhere. He is going to be so important for this team

-Dusty played the whole 4 quarters. Was scratchy early but started to really turn it on with his ball use as the game went on. Was exciting to see the king return

-Soldo/Nank Combo again was really good. They are going to massively important for our mids this year. If they stay healthy we’re a better team instantly with them both playing

-Edwards back at it with his creativity. So important for the teams scoring ability. It’s no coincidence that we are super efficient with his back in the team

-Shai Bolton is ready to break out into a top 20 player in the competition. How far he can go will be how far tigers can go. Hes a seriously special footballer.

-castagna has looked really fit and has been good in the intra club and now this praccy match. Really lively.

-Balta a concern again. I really don’t think he’s a player you can just throw around the ground and plug holes. He not really a natural footballer and his footy IQ is actually really low. So he needs to go back to the backline. That’s pretty much all I can say about him.

-Tarrant was underwhelming but was against probably the best key fwd combo in the competition. So I’m not overly concerned.

-baker was clever as usual. Finished with a couple of goals and is just another huge key to our success

-Gibcus was given a lesson….but I am EXTREMELY happy he was given that experience. He is a 19 year old key defender playing his first game against an afl team on the two best key position footballers in the afl. He actually had his moments against Cameron at times and honestly in two years time he is going to be a perfect match up for a player like Cameron. So personally I’m absolutely pumped to have a kid of this ability coming into the club. He is a serious talent.

-broad and vlastuin were pretty good. Tough day on a tough ground to defend. Kardinia is a very narrow ground so they could never really use any width to get any easy footy. Defended okay.

-Ross was good. I’m honestly starting to feel better about the kid. He used the ball much better by foot. He’s a really hard worker and I want to see him succeed.

-Miller was dower. Nothing exceptional but nothing poor. A bit of meh to be honest. I can’t see him playing round 1.

-Riewoldt got better as the game went on. But I’m still a bit concerned about his mobility. Ill never write him off as he is one of my favourite footballers of the past decade. But Father Time is knocking on jacks door.

-short was a bit meh aswell. Just need him to find some penetration in his kicking. He really floats kicks and it’s really easy to defend.

-kmac floated in and out of the game as per usual. Did some handy things. Reliable footballer.

-Tyler Sonsie and Tom Brown both looked really exciting when they got their chances. Sonsie is a really calm ball user and knows where to go to find the footy. His development is going to be great to watch. Tom Brown looked to be a really similar player to what Nick Vlastuin is now. I really enjoyed his composure and looks a natural HBF. Great signs from those two.

Last two quarters got to watch Rioli Jnr, Sampson, Cumberland, Martyn, Stack, Nyoun, do some things. Nothing really stood out from what I watched. Stack isn’t going to play round 1 from I watched. Judson Clarke was impressive in a couple of plays. Looks like he will be really clever footballer.

Thinking about Cotchin, Graham, Lambert and grimes (and I guess Daniel Rioli) didn’t play is exciting but also a slight worry as we are going to need pretty much no injuries to win a flag this year.
