Gibcus on track for early debut as Stengle shows promise for Cats

Richmond defeated an inaccurate Geelong in the first four quarters of their practice match at GMHBA Stadium as Tom Lynch and Dustin Martin made successful returns from minor niggles and the Cats’ Tyson Stengle showed he will be a valuable acquisition with four goals.
Cats defender Tom Stewart also made a successful return in his first match back from the foot injury that kept him sidelined during last year’s finals series, showing he had lost none of his dash or spring as he cleaned up in defence.
Dustin Martin was back in action for the Tigers on Saturday against Geelong.

The Cats had seven more scoring shots than Richmond but lost by 18 points before both teams shook hands, with the senior group replaced by each club’s VFL line-ups for two more 30-minute periods of play before workers moved in to set up for the Foo Fighters concert.
Cats assistant James Kelly said Stengle, who has kicked 15 goals in 16 games with Richmond and Adelaide, had not put a foot wrong since he joined Geelong, and he expected him to prove a hard match up because of his ability on the ground and in the air.

He said he would be particularly important when the team played three talls because of his ability to “make something out of nothing”.
Shai Bolton was outstanding for the Tigers, while Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins showed they will once again be a dangerous combination inside 50. It was a good test for Tigers defenders Robbie Tarrant and Josh Gibcus, with Tarrant battling at times as he eases his way into a new system after crossing from North Melbourne.

Martin was good when near the action, feeding off Tigers co-captain Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo who gave Rhys Stanley a workout in the ruck.
Patrick Dangerfield was quiet as he tuned up for another season in familiar fashion with the Cats exposing Max Holmes and Shaun Higgins in the centre with Mitch Duncan and Sam Menegola missing and Joel Selwood starting forward on occasions.

Richmond were penalised at one stage for dissent after claiming a kick for goal by Jed Bews had been touched with either Jack Riewoldt or Nathan Broad the culprit. It shapes as an interesting factor this season as the AFL cracks down on players disputing decisions in a demonstrative manner.
Richmond assistant coach Xavier Clarke said players would need to be disciplined with the Tigers supporting any initiative that ensures umpires are shown respect. “We just have to mindful of it ... bite our tongue and get on with the game,” Clarke said.
The only injury concern came in the VFL match when Cooper Stephens left the ground to have his ankle – which gave him trouble in 2021 – assessed. Stephens had shown a fondness for the contest in the final quarter of the AFL match, with one stoppage clearance exceptional. Kelly was uncertain as to the extent of the injury but said Stephens just needed game time because he was going to be a good player.

THE NEW KIDS
Gibcus looks poised to play in round one after getting the job on Cameron. Cameron had his measure but Gibcus would have benefitted from the experience and showed how his clean hands and leap will be an asset. “[Josh’s] been really impressive. He has trained really well and competing against the big guys at training, but it is good to see him against a quality forward,” Clarke said. “He will learn a lot from today. He is only going to grow as he is a competitor who loves the contest. If he continues trending the way he is then I think we will see him pretty early in the year.”
Geelong are also blooding De Koning in defence, with the youngster battling against Tom Lynch. De Koning is athletic and big enough to hold down a key position so should be given time to develop. Both sides played youngsters after three-quarter time in the main match, with Shannon Neale’s high leaping a standout for Geelong and Tom Brown showing ability for the Tigers.

THE COACHES’ BOX
Selwood is starting across half-forward before drifting into the midfield while the Cats expose more players in the middle. Kelly said it was unfair to keep asking the skipper to batter himself all season in the middle. “We know what he can do around the ball ... so if we get through the next game and have a bit of look and Joel feels like he is comfortable and he has a few strings to his bow rather than just being in every centre bounce that is a good thing for Joel and a good thing for us,” Kelly said. Dangerfield spent time forward without having a major impact, with the Cats’ structure familiar. Richmond’s Ralphsmith will replace Bachar Houli across half-back. The Tigers have pushed Noah Balta forward where he will take time to find consistency but will be a threatening presence as he develops. ”He is learning his craft,” Clarke said. Soldo is also a handy addition in the ruck to work in tandem with Nankervis, meaning Pickett can avoid being required for hit-outs.

WHO STOOD OUT
Stengle was the most dynamic Cat on the ground in the first three stanzas, kicking four goals and being a lively presence as a small forward inside 50. Higgins also shone early in the midfield after a frustrating first season at the Cats in 2021, while Zach Guthrie is ready to cement a spot in defence. Lynch has recovered from his hamstring injury and played well as did Martin, who enjoyed the blow-out after missing the end of last season. Bolton was among the Tigers’ best.

WHO’S MISSING
Mitch Duncan remains doubtful for round one as he battles a calf injury, while Jack Henry, Sam Menegola and Jonathon Ceglar are yet to appear this season for the Cats, but they remain chances to be available for selection against the Suns. The Tigers rested Trent Cotchin, Dan Rioli and Dylan Grimes missed after contracting COVID-19, while Jack Graham (hamstring) and Kane Lambert (hip) remain doubtful for round one.

As I said I didn’t watch….. but from what I’ve read it sounds like we just bombed it in there again.
It wasn’t our forward entries that were the problem. I thought that they were OK.

It was our kicking through the midfield/ from half back and our ability to win contests that was the major problem IMO. Was difficult to get momentum going our way because of these reasons.
We were OK when we won a clearance or got momentum going our way.

A bit different to the past where we struggled capitalising on our momentum. Still, we have to improve from today’s showing if we’re wanting to catch up to the likes of Melbourne. I don’t think we’d have defeated them playing the way we did today.

Appreciate the effort, but you might have had the rose (or yellow and black) glasses on. A few counterpoints:
  • Martin - clearly a lighter player without the strength to fend off tackles. Pretty rusty with his disposal.
  • Gibcus - too light. Anyone thinking he's playing as CHB in 2022 is kidding themselves. Combined with Balta's terrible display up forward, I think this fantasy (Balta to CHF, Gibcus to CHB) is dead #itsnothappening
  • Tarrant - oh dear. Probably not a great matchup for him, but he was about as useful to the team today as I was. Sitting on my couch. Drinking a beer. Browsing my phone. #canonlygetbetter
  • Miller - looked like a VFL player. Just can't see it.
  • Short - horrible. Just horrible. Couldn't stop the wombat from kicking goals. Offered no run and carry. Hacked kicks forward. WTF has happened to him??
I guess that's the difference between watching on TV and watching at the ground, you see things that the screen doesn't show.

Martin barely got out of 2nd gear all game. Treated the game as it should have been treated and got rid of the rust and got some match fitness under the belt.

Never suggested that Gibcus would be our CHB in 2022, but what he did do was hold his own against an experienced opponent for the most part. His inexperience showed through at times, but will only learn from the game.

Tarrant played his first game for the club and was leading a back line where his KPD support was Miller and Gibcus who've played 1 AFL game between them. Lets see him when playing with the full strength back line. For mine that includes getting Balta back in D50.

Miller wasn't exposed against proven AFL opposition and that's all you can ask of him as player with 1 AFL game to his name.

Not sure how you can label Short horrible. Didn't see anything at the ground that you could call horrible.

For the first hit out there was some good signs, given we had a number of players missing and were asking a number of younger players to fill the void and there were some issues that still need work.

Anyone expecting us to be playing our best footy in our first preseason hit out is setting themselves up for disappointment.

Was so good to have the tigers back on tv.

I liked

Ross. Played hard footy and found it pretty well.

Lynch. He is crucial to 2022 chances.

Vlas. Star.

Dow. Reads the taps beautifully. Looked fast and went hard.

Bolton. Star.

Dusty. Playing. Looked ok, evasive and cruising.

Sonsie. When he gets fit look out. Just a natural footballer

Others.

Gibcus. He’s not ready. Those saying he broke even must have been watching a different game.

Tarrant. Hopefully just needs to gel. Grimes will help that.

Balta. Looked lost :(

What did you make of Sonsie Morro?

Stack has all the attributes and has nothing to prove in this glorified whack off game.
Sonsie is continually built up but I've seen nothing from him that he is in our best 22 at the moment.
At the moment.
No kidding mate.
He's missed half the pre season.lol

Stayed for the first 4 periods and here are my player observations.

Vlastuin - played a typical game with strong attack on the ball and opponent. Showed good dash from D50 when he got the chance.
Prestia - looked fantastic. Covered the ground easily and got his hands on plenty of ball at the stoppages/centre bounces.
Martin - looked as good as he ever has. Did as he pleased and barely got out of 2nd gear over the whole game. Like a champion racehorse will be better for the run.
Ross - had some important touches while attending centre bounces. Was exposed at times for a lack of leg speed and ball use let him down a couple of times as well.
Tarrant - first real hit out for the club and it showed at times. To be fair though he was leading a KPD unit that comprised of Miller and Gibcus so it's no surprise that the support wasn't there.
Baker - looks much more dangerous playing up the ground, which gives us a totally different look.
Riewoldt - so apparently he'd lost his leap and slowed down too much to be effective. Saw nothing to back that up today. Leapt for his marks and moved around the ground easily. Another to benefit from having a longer break.
Edwards - playing up forward with stints in the middle he was at his usual creative best. Could be dangerous as permanent forward.
Castagna - the last of the chaos smalls remaining in the F50. Was involved in plenty of the play and hit the scoreboard, spent some time up on the wings.
Short - typical Short game rebounding from HB, with plenty of run and carry.
Aarts - spent most of his time playing the wing opposite KMac and played the role pretty well
Lynch - like a few above seems to have benefitted from a longer break and was moving the best he has with us. Kicked 3 before being removed from the game. If he can stay healthy then look out.
Soldo - how good is it having our best tap ruck back playing. Some of his tap work in the middle to provide silver service to our midfielders was something they will love as the season unfolds.
Balta - hmmm, I'm not a fan of him forward and saw nothing that has me thinking differently. Will watch with interest the next few games to see how long they persist with it, but I'm thinking he'll be in the back line before ANZAC day.
Caddy - had limited impact when he finally got on, which is kind of disappointing as he was coming in fresh after others had already played for an hour. Looks destined to playing VFL most of the year.
Nankervis - kicked the first goal for us and his partnership with Soldo in the ruck/forward role will be very important to our fortunes this year.
Dow - liked what I saw from him in the middle. Got some important touches and used the ball well. Seems to be next in line for a midfield call up
Gibcus - was entrusted with matching up on Cameron and held his own. Inexperience cost him in a couple of 1-1s but the kids class shows up already. Plays R1 IMO
Bolton - seems to be alternating with Edwards in a mid/forward role and was very dangerous up forward. Kicked a couple of pearlers in the 3rd period.
Brown - wasn't overawed when he got his chance with some good work and took a nice grab right in front of us. Should get a chance this year at some time this year.
McIntosh - played as the defensive winger, often sweeping around the back of the centre bounce to be a link up. Slight scare when he went down early in the game, but came back and was going strong to the end
Broad - good to have him back in D50. Intercept marking and zoning off to help the KPD. Hopefully he gets back to the form he was in to start 2021.
Sonsie - was thrown into the middle when he came on and was given the responsibility of minding Dangerfield a few times. Was able to find the ball pretty easily in general play as well.
Ralphsmith - put his hand up to take Houlis spot as the rebounding defender. Was given the responsibility to kick in on most occasions and was also looked for when we were rebounding from D50.
Miller - held his own as the 2nd KPD, wouldn't be shocked to see him start the season as the 2nd KPD.

Things I liked:
The change up in the forward line made us look dangerous with the 3 marking options in Lynch Jack and Soldo/Nankervis/Balta working well. The change up in the make up of the smalls was the bigger difference. With Castagna Edwards Bolton Baker rolling through we maintain the defensive pressure but we also now become dangerous offensively when the ball hits the ground.

The move of HRS to D50 as a rebounding defender shows a lot of promise and we were looking for him coming out of D50 often. Be interesting to see how things pan out with Rioli being added to the mix.

Was pleased to see some of the younger midfielders being given the opportunity to play in the middle and they made the most of the chances. I'm expecting to see more of it as the year unfolds.

We looked to move the ball quicker than we were last year and it paid off as it meant our KPFs were able to compete in more 1-1 contests rather than in big packs. Hopefully that happens a lot more in the season proper.

Things I didn't like:
As mentioned, Balta up forward looks wasted. Struggled to have any impact at all.

Disappointed that RCD wasn't playing, hopefully it was just a niggle keeping him out as it's a big year for him.

The shitty internet service at Moe by the Sea. You'd swear they were operating on dial up.
Best level headed report of a friggen practice match I've seen, thanks for the report

Thought Ralphy was very good

gibby got better as the game went on

I had a look at him and Tom Brown is a much better looking player in comparison.
But that’s because Brown looks very good for someone who hasn’t debuted yet and not because Sonsie’s skills are particularly bad.

It normally takes a season at the very least to judge a midfielder (probably more than that) so I think we ought to give him more time than an unofficial preseason match.
