Generally speaking, leaving the ground to bump and hat bump being high will be graded as intentional. Careless is normally more when insufficient duty of care was taken than lining someone up.

However, the tribunal (if it goes straight to tribunal) are not bound by precedent. And certainly not precedent from prior years. They never have been, and the AFL has been even more explicit about it this year with head knocks.
As was quoted before (copied below) if 2023 guidelines are still in place and it is regarded as high impact - rather than severe - it would be three weeks. If it goes to tribunal, anything from 4-8 could happen.
More likely 6-8 being a small club player, without a large media support group, no finals on the horizon, and the focus on concussion flaring up again. Maybe even 10 if he had hit a big name player from a big club.

2023 Guidelines:

This SEN article from last week describes how the AFL changed the tribunal guide because of the doors open last year in the Pickett and Maynard incidents. So yes, precedent from previous years is out, but it doesn’t directly say this year - In saying that, I don’t think any of us has read the whole of the 2024 guide.

The SPP bump was graded as careless and resulted in 4 weeks (which I think is about the mark). The argument for careless can be made because of Rioli’s tackle changed the dynamics of the situation. Even if you don’t buy the “SPP went to assist in the tackle” line (which I’m not sure that I do)

The only way that longer ban is coming is if it is assessed as intentional (which I think it needs to be), as the other elements of the charge should be the same.

At a minimum? At a minimum he misses the first 5

It's hard with concussions. It depends on what North's medical team think about Jy. I don't think he will be doing any contact for a couple of weeks at least. Would be very surprised if he's named for round 1.

I think we can all expect and accept he is going to get 6 weeks

I just love the class of people here trying to character assassinate a person who made a mistake.
Cant wait to hear there responses when inevitably one of the players from there team does the same thing this year.

Absolute Hypocrites all you faceless gremlins
Yep- this is an easy one for the AFL. He’s not a name player from a big club.

He will get 6-8 weeks and the media will crucify him.
Gerard and Robbo won’t have his coach on the show telling them how much of a good guy he is. Nor the player himself will get a chance to public ally express how remorseful he is with Gerard and Robbo nodding in agreeance.

The real test will come when a media favourite does this. It will stand to be seen if they treat him with the same level of fairness as they will with Webster.

No doubt guys like Pickett, Cripps, Judd, Stewart etc got off based on their name and character according to the narrative they wanted to play out.

Times haven't changed that much from when that happened 12 years ago.

The damage to Riewoldt wasn't any less because it happened 12 years ago and the cheap shot from Ziebell wasn't any better because it happened 12 years ago.

The only thing that has changed since then is people's overreaction to a hit like that and calling for ridiculous over the top suspensions.

If Ziebell copped 4 weeks for that hit on Riewoldt why should Webster cop a bigger suspension now?

Some people here are calling for an 8 week suspension or even more which is more than what Barry Hall copped for a king hit on Staker?

That's just ridiculous no matter what times you are judging it by.
In medieval Europe, you could have your hand cut off for stealing a loaf of bread. Why shouldn't the punishment be the same now?

Ross the boss was big on this concussion issue when he was in the media saying that it needed to be forced out of the game. l wonder what his thoughts are now that he's back coaching the guy that has caused this...

Gets worse the more you look at it

Far out.

That's 6 easily.

Again same as the SPP theory, why do that in a preseason? There's nothing on the line to even generate that level of aggression. I get throwing the body around and being aggressive in a proper match as the philosophy might be to get physical, and white line fever with lots on the line can sometimes mean you take things too far, but this is just completely pointless.

That he made a mistake in the heat of the moment and unlike others he will cop a penalty.

I was on the fence 5m from the hit.

Two things;

1) Yes, Simpkin was knocked out
2) Yes, Webster elbowed him in the head

St Kilda supporters trying to add in doubt are ****ing stupid.

I saw it a little different. I think he's initially wanted to bump him. But jumped higher to protect himself. I don't think there was ever any deliberate intention to take him out.

However the problem with every bump, where the player jumps to protect themselves is they have no right to protect themselves. If you are going to bump, then stay at the same level.

He deserves a penalty of 4 to 5 but I still don't think he made contact with his head.

I would argue we've already seen many times what happens when a media darling or a 'big' team player is reported. Cotchin, Cripps, Maynard, Stewart, Hodge...
This is a huge frustration for many. A seemingly different set of rules and guidelines depending on who you are or who you play for, or what stage of the season we are at.
This current tribunal raffle just isn't working.
You can not tell me Kossie Picketts bump on Bailey Smith is worth 2 weeks, then tell me that SPP is worth 4 weeks less than a year later.
If SPP gets 4 weeks for his hit (which I have no problem with, as long as it's consistent across the league) and that's the precedent for the year, then Webster is gone for minimum 6.
These same rules apply for EVERYONE in the comp. I'd love to see what the AFL would do if Nick Daicos were to run in to some guys head and concuss him in Rd 23 when he's a favorite for the Brownlow. I know for sure the media wouldn't be coming out with pitchforks like they've done to SPP and arguably more deservedly Webster.

All we want is consistency.
