He seems to be saying IF is foolish... if... you don't have the discipline to avoid binging on crap food once you get hungry.

Can't see how that proves it's foolish for people who do have discipline though, and personally IF has actually taught me/helped me develop discipline.
Same here that is why i was asking for clarification from him. Claiming IF is foolish because people eat crap after a fast is a baseless assumption.

I assumed there must be more to what he was posting.

I perhaps shouldn't have called it foolish because certainly some people do it and achieve good results.
My main point is if fat loss is the goal then it can be achieved by simply eating healthy foods like I previously mentioned and exercise with high intensity interval training and weight training.

There is no reason to fast for fat loss. In fact I believe it's better if you don't skip meals at all.
Lack of discipline is the single biggest reason why people have trouble losing fat. The number of people who have trouble giving up bread and grains for example. And of course treats such as icecream, chocolate etc....
Losing fat is about changing a lifestyle. It's important to get into good eating and training habits and to get into a routine.

So I'm not saying fasting doesn't work just it isn't necessary.
I'm not going to tell a fat person not to eat. I'm going to tell them what to eat.

I think it's well reasoned. I mean - In the mainstream I think it's definitely a better way of thinking. I say this in terms of eating healthier rather than incorporating fasts into your daily routine.

If an overweight person was faced with a scenario of not eating for 16 hours and eating all food within an 8 hour time frame and with a scenario of still eating often, but healthy, they will select the one where they get to eat normally. Faced with the proposition of not eating for 16 hours, I think it will scare a lot of people away.

Why is it better? Explain why.

From what i have read the benefits to fasting are greater than just fat loss.

Yes that may be true but this thread is about losing fat.
Fat people didn't just get fat by accident. They eat crap and lots of it. They also graze meaning they will watch a DVD and consume an entire packet of biscuits etc...

Fat people will not stop eating so changing there lifestyle takes time. What I do is tell them things like instead of having cornflakes for breakfast I want you to have scrambled eggs. Instead of having 2 pies with sauce for lunch I want you to have half a chicken breast with vegetables or salad. Instead of having KFC for dinner I want you to have steak and vegetables. Instead of having a can of coke have water and so on.

So they are still eating their meals just better choices. If I told them to skip breakfast they would be very tempted to snack on something before lunch. I tell them if they feel hungry in between lunch and dinner to have a snack but the snack must be either a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts such as macadamia.

You see I don't want them getting hungry. Especially early on. Just by giving up soft drink and junk snacks they will start to see results and this is great for their motivation and self esteem.

Remember these people eat crap everyday. No point trying to change everything completely all at once though. Better to just make small changes over a few weeks so they can get into a routine.
If they feel it's too hard they will dump it completely and then go back to their unhealthy lifestyle so it's important to ease them into it.

I agree. Intermittent fasting definitely has it's place, but maybe not first off the bat for someone trying to lose weight. You get them into a healthier lifestyle first, a bit of a routine. Change their mindset. Think positive.

I think IF is for further down the track; once they have actually made the change for good and then can start experimenting with this sort of thing.

Recommendations in the fitness world always gain blind acceptance despite a dearth of objective data ... Back in the day everyone was pushing 6 meals a day, now it is the complete opposite and everyone is on the fasting bandwagon ... Maybe people will revert back to breakfast, lunch and dinner one day! Perhaps a few years down the line, people will finally realize that as long as total daily energy intake/macro-nutrients are matched, the difference is going to be minimal. Your lifestyle/training regime should dictate your eating pattern, not the other way around.

I totally agree. And that Is why I reckon IF is the most effective method.

Paradoxically IF actually takes the least self discipline out of all diet regimes, in my view. A person on a calorie deficit is basically hungry all the time. I see it with my wife: she does the traditional method of dieting, following WeightWatchers and Jenny Craig type plans and she is bloody miserable from the moment she wakes up to the time she goes to bed. It is a constant battle. I on the other hand just do a 24 or 36 hours fast once every 2 or 3 weeks and while there are a couple of tough sections of 15 minutes or so every now and then where you get hungry, once you get through them it is an absolute breeze. 20 days out of 21 I don't have to worry at all about counting calories and eat until i'm satisified( I do eat clean whole foods though, as you rightly reccomend).

I only eat 3 meals a day. Eating 6 or 7 times a day is ridiculous. Your digestive system has no times to rest and because your bloody sugar and insulin levels is alway elevated there is little opportunity for your body to tap its fat sources.

I consider this bloke probably the closest thing to an expert in the body building industry (he has a PHd with a specialty in Protein Synthesis) and he reckons constant eating actually hurts dem gainz

I have main breakfast (oats, nuts fruit and yoghurt), 2nd breakfast an hour or two after (shake likely, or piece of wholemeal toast), morning snack (banana similar), lunch (meat based, or tuna salad), arvo snack (tuna), dinner (meat and veg) dessert (shake).

Seems to do the job. But I guess it's all about getting your body the right type of energy, the right amount of energy and get it in (lol yeah) when it's needed.

So much this.

Furthermore everyone's body reacts differently to different routines and programs, the trick is to find what works for you (through systematic experimentation) and then go for it.

Everyone should also keep in mind that what works for you may not work/not be relevant for others to achieve their goals.

I agree with minimising meals and snacking to control insulin, my routine at the moment

between 7-8am Supgreens and green tea

Around 11am I have a mix of WPI and meal replcement.

Around 2pm lunch which is salad each day and i mix every second day with 2 eggs/bacon or tuna/turkey

Around 7-8pm dinner which i mix up between steak, chicken or salmon with plenty of veggies, some sweet potato and/or black rice. Followed with some strawberries, blueberries, raspberries coconut yoghurt and almonds.

I try to condense my eating into 8 hours.

To much sense in this post!

The same bloke who Martin Berkhan always wants to biff with over the interwebz.

They do have pretty similar theory's is all.

Alan Aragon is another.

The funny thing about Layne is his complete backflip on many things bodybuilding. Find earlier posts, interviews, blogs etc. and you'll find many conflicting views of his own.

Wrong, back in the day people hunted during the day & feasted at night , fasting, then we evolved to multiple meals , now we are adapting back to following eating protocols of ancient warriors & gladiators that were a lot fitter, stronger & healthier than today's poor excuse for a human!

Vegetarians are fat & they don't eat crap according to them.

Fat people need to fast for the reason being is eating causes hunger so the more they eat the more they want to eat which is why they are obese.
Multiple Small meals during day is too hard for fatso's to control stopping at a small amount so they snack in between meals.
By fasting it will reduce the need to for fill their hunger, they can have a big meal at night rather than trying to eat 6-8 small meals a day , they can then focus on their big meal & night & look forward to it.
If they eat a big chunk of protein n fat at the start of the meal , that will fill them up so not much carbs will be needed to accompany it , which will lead to less calories than multiple meals.
Plus fasting will cause them to use surplus body fat as energy to get through the day.

You would be surprised how many fatty's don't feel like eating when dieting but do so cause their Bodytrim or Michele Bridges plan says to, so they eat a meal & stir up hunger again.

Remember Diet is King , exercise is Queen.

Good decision dear. I really appreciate you. According to me the simplest way to reduce weight is dieting and exercising. Make sure that you take low fat and carbs in your diet. Also try to drink green tea, It's boost your metabolism and helps to burn extra body fat. But with your diet don't forget to take exercise. In exercise, I think cycling and swimming is good option.

This sounds like the advice I got from a dietitian in 1995!
