Reminds me of the name Chad. I've never met a person with that name but I remember a game between WC and Crows a couple of years back when there were 3 Chads on the ground at one time.
At one point there were 3 Chads in the West Coast squad - Morrison, Rintoul & Fletcher.
Without appearing to be too hard on the Cornes family, Kane is another one that is over-represented in football circles. I've never met anyone named Kane, or heard of anyone anywhere away from football with that name, but there's plenty of them playing footy.

I seem to remember a Brisbane player called Dikfoss, I found that name very funny when I was a kid.

It was John Gastevich. He changed his name to Gastev.

If you want names go to the NFL. Peerless Price is one of my favourites.

Xavier and Raphael Clarke may be the most unusually named brothers ever to pull on the boots. Theyt actually have another brother with an unusual name, but I've forgotten it. Has a 'Raphael' ever played AFL? I know a Xavier has, sometime in the past, but I've never heard a 'Raphael' take the fild before!

Spot on.

The Gastev's came to Australia pre WW2 from Macedonia when the Serbs controlled the area and called it South Serbia.

All Macedonian surnames like Gastev, Markov, Petrov etc were forced by the Serbs to add the Serbian termination "ic" to attempt to assimilate them.

Once in Australia most Macedonians from that region dropped the "ic" and reverted back to their original names.

After 1945 Marshall Tito and his henchman allowed Macedonians to dispense with the "ic" termination, but only if they added "ski" in its place. This was done as an attempt to distance Macedonians from Bulgarians.

Macedonians from the Greek occupied portion of Macedonia were forced by the Greek government to change their names to Greek sounding names in 1927.

So this is what these players names would look like if the dastardly Greeks never had their way:

Peter Daicos = Peter Daicov
Ang Christou = Ang Kiranov
Paul Peos = Paul Peyov
Alex Markou = Alex Markov
Jason Trianidis = Jason Trayanov
Sam Phillipou = Sam Phillipov
Jim Christou = Jim Hristov
Daniel Mitropoulos = Daniel Mitrov

You get the picture....

Great post, cooldewd. Very interesting.

Out of curiosity, what's the logic behind Christou having been both Kiranov and Hristov, according to your list? Greeks just didn't care if the changes resulted in two surnames becoming the same?

Ang Christou and Jim & Alex Christou who played for Fitzroy in the 70s are not related. So the fact that they ended up with the same surname is coincidental.

On the flip side, it was not unusual for members of the same family to end up with different surnames! I know of a family whose surname was Petrov. When the Greek government officials changed the family name in the village, it was changed to "Petridis". One of the sons was doing national service in the Greek army where they changed his name to "Petrou". Another son was on work migration in the USA...when he returned his name was changed by the officials at the port to "Petropoulos".

So you had a situation that the parents surname was "Petridis" and the sons were named "Petropoulos" and "Petrou" respectively!

Ridiculous, but true.

On the other hand, humorous surnames in Macedonian that were slightly changed into Greek sounding names have no significance in Greek as opposed to their Macedonian meanings.

Smerdenkov = Stinker or Smelly! Greeks changed it to Smardenkas which is akin to being called Stinkeropolous or Smellyopoulos.

Guzilainov = **** arse! Greeeks changed it to Guzilainos, again akin to being called Smellyarseopolous!

These people all live in Melbourne.....strange but true!

What about Donald Dickie?

Or better yet, Che Cockatoo - Collins?

Jade Rawlings?
Brady Rawlings?

Come to think of it, there's been plenty of strange names in football. Nothing those people can really do about it, but most of us find it amusing all the same. :)

Yep. Had one season with the Bombers in 1992.

Another recent player with an unusual first name is Caidyn Beetham.

There's also Kickett, Pickett, Peckett. What nationalities would they be??
